Simple as that, it needs to be marked.
There are unfortunately too many people who will just hide/run away with the key just to make sure if they can´t get the loot you won´t get it either. We lost already several Forts to such people.
Thanks

Yeah...but you know the Fort that takes the Key, Just Wait...either they come back with the Key and open it or dig it up (which if they bury how is mark on map gonna help?)

Much like the early days of Forts, Good times but that comes with who has the time to wait around?
I believe you don´t fully understand - you are assuming people will just hide and wait until its clear and come back and open it. We had already a few cases where I can confirm that the enemy ship just dove afterwards and the key was gone while the Vault was still not opened. Much like people who would drive into red sea just do deny the enemy the loot/win, its basically the same but they changed this at least.
Furthermore I believe it would be also best to change the key type to the same as the Fort of Fortune/Fort of the Damned etc so it can´t be digged.

You can't burry fort keys.
@dermasterbob According to SoT Wiki the key can be burried inside a chest:
"The Key can be carried, and buried, inside any Container Chests."
No.
Only folk who complain about not being able to see it on the Map are those who did not FINISH the fort.
Sneaky plays need to be allowed - finishing a fort while ships naval, solo slooper being able to finish fort under the nose of larger crews.
Those folk who finish/hide the key would attempt to come back when safe to do so.
If they don't or key is lost to the Sea(as happened to me when duo sloop didn't alliance or make any attempt to finish fort after I had made ALL progress on Fort) then dem the breaks.
An attacker doesn't have a right to the loot in the vault if they don't have the tactical nous to finish the Fort.
Try landing the killing blow on the Skeleton Lord and you have FULL knowledge of the location of the key!
