Inclusion of National Flags and Ship Colors and the East India Company

  • It's a shame we don't have the ability to have fleet or squadron battles, where ships are decorated in period colors of specific nationalities, ie French, Dutch, American, Spanish, Portuguese and English of course
flying our colors in a head-to-head battle, that would be kind of cool, teams could be formed into national team/crews and we could have a global event/competitions. Localized, initially then regionally and finally
    a streamed final on Lan.

I also thought that having the East India Company as an alternative to skeleton or ghost ships could be a possibility, especially on the Safer Seas, having crews of NPC pirates making themselves a pain in the backside would also add to the ambience of the game, especially if they were based on fictional character crews, Like Long John Silver, Captain Flint, Black Beard who could be encountered on shore or on the sea. If random encounters can be generated for Skeletons, Phantoms etc... shorely we can put some skin on the bone.

    Just a thought

  • @a-dodger-esq seeing how much of an issue a simple flag with the colours of the rainbow creates we dont need anymore nationalism/reasons for division on the seas.

The SoT while taking place around the golden age of sail takes place in a fictional place where the East india trading company is already represented in the lore as the grand maritime union

  • Country flags cause issues when A) there are over 200 countries in the world B) some of those countries are at conflict with each other and C) in the time period the game is set, a lot of those countries don’t exist. It causes more of a headache than it’s worth and as a forum member explained above, getting the pride progress flag in took long enough and even then there’s restrictions behind it. Nice idea on paper, but not in reality.

  • @a-dodger-esq not to even mention the issue with what flags to include, because there are hundreds of countries but there is also countries that dont acknowledge some countries that other countries do and vice versa. See the current situation between israel and palestine (which has been ongoing for decades basically.)

The sheer amount of political, and even actual legal issues this would bring up is just not worth the hassle.

  • I don't think resources should ever be spent on introducing current real world national flags.

Now, would it be cool to see time period accurate flags? Absolutely, we already have established Spain and I think the UK in the lore.

Though I would prefer to see more "made up" flags like for the GMU and what not.
