Character Creation

  • I know this topic has been beaten into the ground a 1000+ times, But I think that just goes to show how many people want it implemented. the fact its a constant re-occurring topic and will most likely remain a re-occurring topic no matter what reasons the Devs and or Outliers give for not adding it is a good example of the lacking dialogue and transparency between the larger player base and the dev team.

I get the devs said want to avoid having people spend hours in character creator making "Beautiful" or "Flawless" pirates and having most of the player base look like the same generic white dude and that the IPG will prevent that.

But from what I've noticed it doesn't prevent thoes issues anyways, Instead of spending hours in a character creator most players just spend hours in the IPG to get a generic looking white guy or gal

Most of the pirates people choose in IPG anyways are just either cartoonishly ugly to generic looking or cartoonishly handsome with not much other distinction between them besides the clothing they wear.

So giving people the ability to actually create the character opens up the door for way more possibilities for truly unique looking pirates instead of creating some illusion of uniqueness because certain scar and eye combinations are more "rare".

At the end of the day the main drive of this game is getting money to buy "drip" so refusing a proper character creation to players for essentially a dress up game with pvp seems kind of counter intuitive especially when the concerns given for not adding it still occur in the IPG regardless.

I made this post because of the "Big Listen" effort the devs are attempting to put forward and I know this is something a lot of people have been wanting since the games release so hopefully the dev team see this and take my words into consideration however unlikely that may be.

  • It always comes down to one key issue. The players themselves.

Spending hours making a pirare. That is the player problem.

Not knowing...nobody is gonna care what you look like. "Everyone is out to get you" as many seem to claim.

You never see yourself 99% of the game, so why care again? Your dressing up, but when do you actually see yourself during gameplay? Shopping, Emoting.

  • @burnbacon ah yes classic blame the player not the game

Yet you still didn't provide any counter argument lol. That's cuz you know he's right.

  • @r3vanns I don't need to make a counter argument because the argument of "people just need to not care about how their character looks in a video game that is focused around character customization and if they do then its just some kind of skill issue on their part" is just so laughably out of touch and feels more like your trying to deflect the issue as opposed to actually addressing it

You kinda do, since you're asking for something to be changed 😅 and since Rare gave their answer and stance on this many times over, which you even mentioned yourself.

because the argument of "people just need to not care about how their character looks in a video game that is focused around character customization and if they do then its just some kind of skill issue on their part" is just so laughably out of touch and feels more like your trying to deflect the issue as opposed to actually addressing it

That's not the argument. The argument is - nobody is forcing you to spend x amount of hours for something you do not see 90% of the time. Actually, it's being very clearly and actively advocated against, and that's why IPG is created the way it is.

So by default, you choosing to go against it is entirely on you, and no issue at all. Unless you provide an actual argument how exactly it's an issue. Take yo time 😂

  • Well you cant deny it.
Majority of your gaming is from the eyes of your pirare. You never see your own face.
During your gaming session, other players you encounter, aren't gonna stop to care what you look like as your just another target.

and as always since there no counter remark, you only see your pirate: Main menu, Item Shops and Emoting. Three things that happens so quickly. And again, no other pirate is gonna stop to say "Looking good!"
It silly to make yourself perfect or "decent" in a First person view game which is also a Pvpve game.

Sure we can say, Add in a favorite system. Each time you fav a pirate during the rotation, the game fixates on the favorite pirate more and more. Until...you get that perfection. That seems more ideal and doesnt need a overhaul on a system where players, Choose to spend hours upon hours (some claim months) to find the perfect pirate.
Losing time they could be playing, That is all player choice and issue. Nothing more or less.

  • Barest minimum, give us the ability to control race, default scars, default facial hair, eye colour, gender, and teeth. Too many times I have seen people get their "perfect pirate" and then have to re-roll it because the teeth look like they've had a date with a few too many bricks.

I would agree, possibly with all of this...

...if I didn't see over and over again what Safer Seas, FoV, etc. have done, and keep doing = never enough.

But tbf, of all of things Rare caved and accommodated to specific types of crowds - this is something that would've been harmless the most lol.

So I both agree and disagree with you, if that makes any sense. 😅

  • @r3vanns the point of me bringing that up wasn't because I view people spending to much time creating a character as an issue it was brought up because it was one of the reasons Rare said they didn't want to add a character creator.

But I pointed out how that issue still occurs with the IPG regardless,

So it would just be better to add a proper character creation system instead of continuing with the IPG.

And with the stuff Rare has done in the past to accommodate waaaaay more small and niche parts of the player base this by far the least unreasonable and most popular thing to ask for as it wouldn't overall change how the game is played and or effect the core gameplay but instead just give more creative control to the player.

Because I do Agree with what @BurnBacon said about most other players don't care about what you look like, But most players care about how they/themselves look its why character creation is popular in single player games like Skyrim and what not its to help get the player immersed and invested in a character they want to play as

  • I probably could have been more clear on my wording but these aren't what I think are an issue its stuff Rare has said in the past when character creation is brought up, and I'm just pointing out how many of the reasons they gave for not adding character creation still appear regardless even with the IPG so its better to just implement the system that's in more popular demand if that makes since

  • @burnbacon How many people does anyone run into say " Hey let me check you out"? I'd say 99% just want to kill you and take your loot.

  • @olmudd @BurnBacon its not even about trying to impress other people just having a character players like the appearance of helps them get invested in said character

plus the major focus point of Sea of Thieves has always been customization so it weird not having character creation to begin with

their are also plenty of firstperson games that still got an option for character creation because it just a nice feature to have. Games like Cyperpunk 2077, Bualder Gate, Skyrim, Elden Ring, Saints Row, Black Desert Online and World of Warcraft to name just a few

especially with the dev team straying further away from Pvp content because Pvp is dead af and going for a more story driven sandbox direction for the future of the game it just makes since to add the highly requested feature of character creation because it literally doesn't take anything away from the game at this point and just gives way more opportunities for truly unique looking pirates instead of having the nearly identical looking barrel chested/fat pirates you get with IPG
