The problem with time limited content updates

  • So, with the new event coming in month 2 of season 17, I wanna share my opinion on time limited content.

X- So firstly, I think time limited content should not be a thing in sea of thieves because it directly targets fomo. There's nothing inherently wrong with fomo, EXCEPT the fact that it basically destroys the game because once that event is over, what's gonna make players want to come back if they liked the event?

"destroys" is such a weird word for this.
They already said, and notice your Insider as well...IF it deem popular enough, they will work it into some sorta rotation. You players get all over hyped and disappointed so quickly, it weird.

  • The part that bothers me is not the events, but the cosmetics. There are over 1000 time limited cosmetics in this game. I see so many people with cool cosmetics and I ask how they got it and the answer is always just " I played in a previous season, this was given to us for free because we played at a specific time" For a game built around having cosmetics that tell a story, they really are bad at letting people keep telling those stories. But what would you expect from a company that doesn't even care about telling their own stories?

  • @burnbacon And? Those players will only play when those events are active? Those players are time limited.

  • Time limited cosmetics should essentially be 'participation trophies' ie you login or you do an activity that cannot be significantly impacted by other players.
PvP in servers cannot be balanced so it is inherently unfair telling a smaller crew/solo to do this activity successfully in this limited time to get this bauble.

The Mega Mous-Stash and Act 2 have stepped on the wrong side of this line.

They also dont't seem to understand that the diving mechanic has made these boosted single events even more difficult to participate in due to skewing servers to big ship hunters.

  • @pc-monkfish If by 'big ship hunters' you mean folks hopping servers to hunt other ships, that was a frequent thing long before diving was introduced.

  • @mopwieldinghedgehog

Presumably you mean repeated scuttling? Or Hourglass dives?
Scuttling - Bye Bye Reaper V and Emmy flag. Hourglass dives at least has an element of risk to it so fair enough.

You cannot deny diving is far more convenient allowing you to keep your emissary, supps and as a result more prevalent in all likelihood.

  • @pc-monkfish They portal hopped and kept their reaper flag, supplies etc.

  • @mopwieldinghedgehog

Good to know but doesn't change my central point that making single events boosted is just encouraging server hopping if they are not available on all servers at one time.

Server hopping will generate more spice no doubt, but makes the server less organic and more competitive potentially. Adding FOMO to that mix is pretty poor. At least with the Act 2 deeds the cosmetics to play for aren't too attractive (to the annoyance of some).

Hopefully the Heist will be Siren Song frequency on servers rather than a de facto world event.

    RIP to that idea.
Was on a server for like 2 hours before the Event popped. Disappointing that Rare seems to want to encourage the server hopping meta to find the Event.
