Hourglass Improvements

  • Hourglass as it stands now needs improvement. Firstly, and one of the most pressing issues, is the cheating problem. It ruins every single player’s experience and while there is hardly anybody cheating on adventure, hourglass is awful, particularly if you have a high MMR. Considering the cheaters always find a way around easy anticheat, Rare should make hourglass accessible to pirate legends only. By making Pirate Legend the requirement to raise Hourglass, this solution tackles the alt account issue commonly utilized by cheaters. Forcing cheaters to grind through Pirate Legend on a new account would, theoretically, make ban evasion a much more tedious task. Some people may have an issue with it as it would lock out newer players, however Rare has previously implemented features which are similar in nature (such as the Skull of Destiny Voyage).

Aside from the Pirate Legend requirement, there are other basic quality of life improvements that Rare could implement, such as instant supply re-queues and Hourglass crates. For the former, instant supply re-queues would have your boat resupply automatically whenever you hit the dive option. The amount that would resupply could be tweaked as necessary for balance, however this would drastically reduce the tedium of having to resupply nearly every match. For the latter option, Hourglass crates, the shipwright could offer purchasable Hourglass crates that are only available once a crew has raised the hourglass. These could include a range of items, such as chainshots, high-tier food, cannons, and wood. Either of these options would make the PVP experience much more streamlined and enjoyable.

Beyond additional functionality or features that Rare could add, there is a list of bugs that plague the mode and severely hinder the experience. The most common and frustrating bugs include: mast bug, cannonballs having no trail when emerging from second deck, double reload bug (particularly with the Blunderbuss), the infamous “Gun no shoot” bug, jump bug, and everyone’s favorite; Merchant crate scam.

Finally, the last relevant issue I’d like to cover is the default arena spawns. Spawns near rocks, volcanoes, active sea forts, and active world events (Ghost Fleets, Ancient Megs, ect..) are a game ruiner at worst and an annoyance at best. Moving the Hourglass spawns to better locations, such as the edges of the map or at the very least open water areas, would even the playing field and help allow player skill to be the determining factor in a victory.

  • @papi-mulc hard agree.

  • Firstly, and one of the most pressing issues, is the cheating problem

Report is all that can be done.

Rare should make hourglass accessible to pirate legends only.

takes less than 24 hours to reach PL and with SS even less. So there need to be stricter stuff...like finish all TT and have all Factions above lvl 50

By making Pirate Legend the requirement to raise Hourglass, this solution tackles the alt account issue commonly utilized by cheaters.

Majority of Alts already have PL, even those accounts they havnt used and save them.

Either of these options would make the PVP experience much more streamlined and enjoyable.

For those who want free supplies and cancel Hourglass.....not enjoyable.

Finally, the last relevant issue I’d like to cover is the default arena spawns. Spawns near rocks, volcanoes, active sea forts, and active world events (Ghost Fleets, Ancient Megs, ect..) are a game ruiner at worst and an annoyance at best.

Part of the Open world. If you pvp without hourglass, it the exact same thing...you might as well request all pvp be removed if your doing these World Events.

Moving the Hourglass spawns to better locations, such as the edges of the map or at the very least open water areas

What of those Defending Loot? Players always seem to forget the easy part of Hourglass, Defenders.

would even the playing field and help allow player skill to be the determining factor in a victory.

That isnt fun, simple making fights a empty void with no world to either make your "Skills" pushed to the test by using your surroundings. I swear...amount of times Ive sunk players by forcing them to crash into rocks is the best. :D Because "I out played them"

  • @burnbacon u reply to everyone like you know whats best for the game but ur just one person and the game isnt meant to please one person

  • @papi-mulc

Its feedback. and Ive seen posts like this all the time, and they are all the same. Filled with cons and not enough pros to "fix" anything or improve.

Like you, your one person and game isn't mean to please you as well. But it is meant to please everyone, but not everyone at the same time. Nobody is happy.

Stay on topic, I gave a feedback on your topic, that is all. Not my fault kids get upset because I have actual things to contribute, like finding issues with the "improvements"

  • @papi-mulc Being a legendary pirate to participate in the battle really looks good, but it won't help you fight against cheaters, as many of them buy accounts with progress. However, your suggestion is valid.

I also suggested adding a timer for the battle, which you must complete within a certain time limit. For example, 15-30 minutes (maximum 45 minutes), no more than that, as it should be a quick battle game rather than a 2-hour water dance because you ran out of supplies.

The empty battleground looks really boring, but the other players who always try to interfere with your battles are really annoying. I would suggest that the battleground be surrounded by a magical wall. You can also go outside the wall, but you will explode. However, other players who are not participating in the battle will not be able to enter.

I would also suggest something to deal with the running players.
They dive underwater to fight, but all they're trying to do is run away from you or climb onto your ship.
Maybe we should bring back the scoring for shots? I mean, like in the arena, the one with the most points won. We got points for every hit on the ship and every player we killed. This would encourage the cowards to act and win instead of swimming away from you until you give up and leave the game, giving them the victory.

  • @xfroggotx eventually there would be a shortage of pl accounts and personally i think they should do nothing ton combat runners nor add a wall that down to your skill i agree the open waters would be boring but the main aim would be to have an arena with no pve

  • I agree with a lot of these points. The pirate legend one in particular. Not only would it provide a bit of a safeguard against cheaters (I recognize it may not be all that much since getting pirate legend doesn't take nearly as long as it used to), but it would also prevent new players from joining hourglass. It's insane that an immediate dive to combat with no restrictions or preparation is placed conveniently on everyone's voyage table, where new players are immediately directed to upon starting the game. Accidentally voting for hourglass and not being able to deactivate it for fifteen minutes might suck for a new player who's looking around trying to figure out what to do. If a new player accidentally sets up hourglass instead of voting for a voyage, it might be a little bit discouraging for them to be sailing around figuring out the game when a ship comes out of the water in front of them and sinks them in seconds. Things like that can drive players away from a game.

I can think of at least one frequent forums user who might say something along the lines of "that's part of figuring out the game. If they don't make mistakes, they won't learn."

You're never going to learn from a mistake if you don't know what mistake you made. Without knowing what hourglass is, a new player who activates it by accident will simply imagine that at any moment, people can come out of the water and sink you regardless of where you are.

Even if the player did vote it up out of curiosity, there should be more explanation in the game as to what hourglass actually is. There should be warnings. I know that there are descriptions in-game, but a new player just starting out isn't likely to just sit there and read through big blocks of text. Even if they do, they might not understand what it means.

  • Preach oml 🙏🙏🙏

  • @papi-mulc

    Agree with most/all of these.

PL level gate for hourglass has been sorely needed since the mode released. It's actually insane to me that it still hasn't been added. Cheaters were a myth before HG came out, the vast majority spend their time in HG, and they make all their money from boosting in HG. Adding a 12 hour grind to their process would weed out a huge chunk of cheaters, along with getting rid of confused swabbies in the competitive game mode.

I personally don't think an instant resupply is necessary, but I don't think there are any draw backs, and enough people want it that I wouldn't care if it were added. Would probably keep a good amount of crews that lose a lot from getting discouraged and leaving queue.

I think hourglass crates are pretty necessary at this point, in the same way that FoV was/is necessary. There are good sweaty crews filled with "namers" that invite cheaters to their crew just to buy them infinite supplies. Adding an in game alternative stops people from going down that pipeline of legitimizing/befriending cheaters. The SoT sweat community is infested with cheater culture, from alt accounts to FoV paks to hard cheats. Rare should be doing everything they can to separate the 2. i.e. listen to the frustrations that make good players turn to cheats and prevent that from being necessary.

It's also mind-boggling that gun jams have been in the game for years. So mind-boggling that I start to feel like it was an intentional quiet nerf to double gunning after some poor dev got camped. It only got as bad as it is after the removal of quickswap.

  • Community been suggesting this for years, it would solve a lot of problems but Rare isnt listening

  • Firstly, PL takes like a day to get nowadays, and secondly, so few players are PL that it doesn't matter. 2.5% of players are PL. Even if we assume 33.3% of players have never done anything in game(66.6% of players have the achievement for eating a banana) , that still means that 1/26th of the playerbase that actually has played some amount are PL. Less than 4% of the people who have played the game some amount are PL.

The skull of destiny voyage is locked to PL because lorewise it makes sense to only trust the best pirates to fight the foes from the sea of the damned, and in terms of gold, its pretty good paying, so giving that to players early on would give them too powerful of a money making tool to grind. It's the same reason why you can't do every quest for every trading company until you hit a certain level with them.

I've never found resupping to be an issue, 90% of my matches use default supps anyways. I think the issue with an "instant resupply" queue is that it could be abused to just give you free supps when you are already supped, and that it would either delete the ability to multi buy supplies with multiple people, or people would multi buy and then use the resupp dive option.

Asking them to fix long standing bugs is kind of pointless... Everyone is already whinging at them to fix them. You adding to the pile doesn't make them more likely to fix them. You didn't even list the most annoying issue of them all, everything having some sort of registration error. Hitreg, foodreg, reloadreg, fake bucket, the list goes on.

It's PvP on demand. Sometimes you fight someone next to an active volcano because you were doing ashen quests in the roar. There are large sea rocks everywhere. The other issue with that is that it could put the arenas in more known locations, meaning people would be more likely to try to camp them. I agree about a lot of the PvE threats though

Likewise, it makes no sense for the Pirate Lord to be sending newborn pirates to fight in a war against the SoT devil. Hourglass never should've been easily accessible to brand new players, but we've gone back and forth over this lots of times.

I imagine you would only get the resupp option when you sink, during the ship sunk cinematic. Like Fortnite's requeue option when you get wiped.

This is a feedback thread. If the devs didn't wanna be "whinged" at, they wouldn't have made a feedback thread. Players complaining is how devs know what issues are priority, squeaky wheel and all that.
