Suggestion – Bringing Back Mystery, Risk, and Long-Term Goals to Sea of Thieves (With guidelines (thanks chatgpt) because someone complaied it was a wall of text)

  • Hello Rare Team,

First, thank you for creating one of the most unique multiplayer experiences I’ve ever played. I’ve spent a lot of hours at sea, and what made me fall in love with Sea of Thieves early (read as a newbie) on was:

The excitement of sneaking up on someone and stealing loot without knowing the value of the haul.

The unpredictability of not knowing how much PvE work someone had done.

The thrill of not knowing exactly what you’d get from a world event or emissary mission (we all know the feeling first time we did a world event after digging loot from the ground)

Over time, the game has become more predictable, especially for experienced players, which can take away some of the thrill. I’d like to suggest a few ideas to bring back that mystery and excitement — even for veterans with thousands of hours.

    1. Add Ultra-Rare “Mythical” Loot
Items as rare as the Shrouded Ghost, selling for very high gold (e.g., 1M+) and big reputation boosts.

Multiple types, each extremely rare (perhaps some of them that a player finds only once a year).

Rare enough not to impact the economy but exciting enough to always be worth chasing.

    1. Randomize World Event Rewards
Example: Every 20–30th Fort of Fortune spawns more Athenas; every 100th could contain the rare mythical item.

Variations in loot create the “maybe this is the one!” feeling and make events worth running repeatedly.

    1. Add Rare Server-Wide Events
Special event spawning once per day per server with unique loot or cosmetics (should encourage multi ships fights)

Encourages competition between crews and increases unpredictability.

    1. Restore Risk and Tension to Loot
Current top-tier loot (e.g., Chest of Fortune) doesn’t make players nervous while having it. Most players wouldn't sweat if they lose it.

In the past, carrying an Athena created constant tension — restoring that feeling would reignite PvP and defensive play.

    1. Introduce High-Cost Cosmetics
Many veteran players have 100M+ gold with little to spend it on.

Add ultra-expensive cosmetics (e.g., 50M each) so rare items become status symbols and encourage long-term grinding.

    Closing Thought:
Sea of Thieves shines when players feel a mix of mystery, risk, and reward. By adding ultra-rare loot, unpredictable event rewards, high-value cosmetics, and situations where players genuinely fear losing their haul, the game could recapture the magic that made it so thrilling in its early days.

Thank you for reading and for continuing to make such a memorable game.

I hope I raise the black once again,
    Daito

  • Something I also want. But the moment they add these, players will be demanding nerf to commendations and increase spawn rates.

They don’t like the grindy, long voyage or secret loot that is random. Shame.

Side note. You could of just edit your last post and not use ChatGPT :/

  • what would be the point of #1-4 if veteran players already have 100M+ gold? these would only be appealing to players who haven't hit 10M much less 1M gold but could already see events like these being used as shooting galleries for veteran pvp players. it wouldn't take long for a lot of player base to just start avoiding those type of voyages/events.

I’m sitting on 200m and I want More! XD. Some of us vets just want to see that gold counter across the screen

    1. BOWS already exists and no one knows it exists. I have seen so many posts on the subreddit asking where to sell the BOWS. No one cares

    2. Actually not the worst idea. I do like the idea that potentially they could add variance and a larger loot pool to forts. They would need to fix the peaking glitch though, otherwise people will peak and ignore them if they have nothing good.

    3. Skull of Siren Song. No one does it. No one cares anymore.

    4. I can't say I disagree here. As someone who is trying to get the comms for selling mega kegs and CoFs, I definitely keep my eyes peeled. It can be a bit nerve wracking and sometimes I will hide my ship behind rocks and row or swim over to a fort so no one contests me as easily.

    5. No. Yes, gold is pointless at high levels. What do you do after you have the most expensive set? Add an even more expensive one? Where does it end? Especially with your idea that we should have MORE gold being payed out.

The reason the game was more thrilling back then was because you weren't so used to it. The new content gives me a lot to do and I find it quite thrilling.
