This is an idea i have about how domestic canaries could be introduced as very basic, free pets.
And by free, I don't mean you wouldn't have to do anything to get it. Instead what i mean is instead of purchasing them with ancient coins, you purchase them with in-game gold.
Basically, when you purchase a canary, you go to the pet chest to spawn it, just like with normal pets. However, you can't pick it up, pet it, or interact with it in any other way other than feeding it. Instead, the canary spawns in the cage located in the captain's quarters. You can feed it, name it and it sings, but not much other than that. Therefore everyone, even people who don't want to spend real money or hunt for the rare ancient skeletons, have a fair chance at getting a pet, but if they want a more "advanced" pet that they can interact with more, they still need to invest a lot more time or just purchase the ancient coins.
