New Hourglass Mode: Bones vs Phantoms

  • So what I'm thinking is, there could be a third option on the hourglass to opt in for a new Hourglass Mode.

    X — Once voting on it, you and your crew (solo sloopers can vote on it as well) will volunteer to scuttle your own ship and respawn on a skeleton galleon or a ghost galleon and immediately dive down to fight with the opposite faction ship.

    X — The size of your crew affects your opponents, matching solos with solos, full 4 player galleons with other 4 player galleons.

    X — You also get either a crew of skeletons or phantoms to help you fight the enemy faction ship. The crew of skeletons or phantoms vary on your crew size, full 4 player galleons only get 1 skeleton or phantom. 3 player brigs get 2 skeletons or phantoms. 2 player sloops get 4 skeletons or phantoms. Solo sloopers get 6 skeletons or phantoms. These phantoms and skeletons can't be revived.

    X — The skeletons and phantoms can repair, fire cannons, or even help raise the anchor. Regular skeletons or phantoms can't angle sails, lower or raise sails, steer, or bail water.

    X — Skeleton Galleons represent the Servants of The Flame. Ghost Galleons represent the Guardians of Fortune.

    X — Skeleton Galleons start with cursed cannonballs, Ghost Galleons start with phantom cannonballs and 2 wraithballs.

    X — Every ghost and skeleton galleon starts with 1 ghost or skeleton captain. These captains can be given orders by you or your crew directly, they can only do one task at a time but can help you bail water, lower or raise sails, or even steer. Captain ghosts or skeletons can be revived.

    X — If the match takes too long, a visual ring around the match area starts slowly shrinking, preventing matches from going on too long.

    X — Every three minutes if the match is still going on, in the middle of the match area, a new chest called the "Chest of Spectral Bones" pops up on a small island that's in the middle, a beacon will be displayed above it. The crew that digs this chest up will gain a refill to their crew skeletons or ghosts, spawning new skeletons or ghosts up to the skeleton or ghost limit depending on the crew size.

    X — Once a crew wins, they get 1.3x more alligence than a normal hourglass match, however, losing in this mode results in getting 1.3x less alligence than losing in a normal hourglass mode. So this mode is basically a bigger risk or reward than normal hourglass. This also prevents loss farmers from constantly losing in this mode while also giving them a better reason to fight.

    Let me know some feedback and what should be changed if this was ever actually implemented.

    People come up with a lot of interesting ideas for HG on these forums, and some of them I think are really cool. The problem is that additional modes will compete with one another, and that could potentially lead to one mode seeming “dead”. If HG had more participation I think multiple modes would be more realistic.

  • @capt-greldik I mean, yeah, but it's just like a little idea for the people who like arena. Me included, I do think multiple modes would kill hg though so maybe it could just be this mode as a additional mode only or there could be like a max of 3 modes if they want to add more modes so hg isn't split between different players.

    sigh...I really think people need visual aid in this in how, It wont really work unless they make major changes.

    ill never Truly understand the hate for Loss farming. If I fought 20 people who all chose to lose farm...That 20 matches that gave me big free Exp toward my own goal. Free Exp...

    How would this fit into Hourglass? Athena vs Reapers? Athena has no reason to sail a skeleton or ghost ship...

  • @burnbacon Reapers sail the skeleton ships, Athena sail ghost ships. Both of the hg curses are related to this, the Servants curse is the skeleton curse, the Athenas curse is the ghost curse. And some people just like the fight and would rather not have their opponent loss farm, personally I don't mind loss farmers. And yes, I did implement a bit of arena into this, I like to think of it as a hourglass-arena type mode. Half arena, half hourglass.

    JUST a new voting....with JUST a new matchmaking system.....with JUST a couple of new ships.....with JUST some additional NPC help....based on JUST how big your crew size is currently....with JUST additional rules for said NPC help.....and JUST some new supply rules...and apparently JUST another totally invented system of directing previously mentioned NPC's (assuming they meet previously mentioned rules and requirements....) deep inhale of breath to control ship functions....JUST to play in an invented 'mode'....with JUST new rules you just made up....

    JUST to get more HG rep?!

  • If this were to be added it would have to be something separate to hourglass. This doesn't match the idea of hourglass from a gameplay perspective, so I won't refer to it in the context of hourglass.
    The ideas seem interesting and semi solid, though I don't agree with it adding to SotF or GoF allegiance. It should have its own reasons to exist to make people want to play it as well as play hourglass, not play one or the other to get to the same end goals.

  • @potatosord Yeah, maybe it could be like every win you get, you get like gold and doubloons or something. I'm not exactly sure, but you can suggest something.

    What's repetitive about it? It PvP on demand, if you dont wanna pvp on demand...sail around the map and find a random ship on your own time.
    New Mods or gameplay mechanics that repeat like arena will become as you said, tiresome and not fun anymore. Especially once cheaters flock to it as well.

  • @thunderdrago205 I think the reward should be something on the level of the PVP curses but specific to that game mode. Maybe its own set of curses, maybe something else entirely, but it should be something significant that players will really want to get, like the PVP curses. I didn't like hourglass at first but then I played a bunch because I wanted to get the PVP curses, and now I realise I enjoy the game mode and it has made me better at naval and boarding combat. The only reason I started HG was because of the curses so something on that level is what I would suggest.

  • @burnbacon I'm saying that I want to pvp in demand but the regular hourglass mode is just spinning in circles until one of you sail out of bounds or something because my opponents usually just spin around me, and I do the same, and we both waste like hours of our time.

  • @look-behind-you That's the problem, I do want to play it. Just not in the way Rare intended. After I got the skelly curse, I've lost all motivation to play hourglass besides the ghost curse.

  • @potatosord Yeah maybe like two new curses or rewards that are separate from the regular hourglass rewards. Imagine like skeleton curse cosmetics that are similar to skeletons that are on skeleton ships. Like a skeleton captain outfit or something. The ghost curse could maybe get like... I'm sure what rewards would be suitable for the ghost curse tbh.

    Well funny as it is, Hourglass isn't a Mode. Its a tool.

    Arena was a mode and look what happen to it?

  • @burnbacon Yeah, I'm basically trying to say they should add something different to hourglass so it doesn't die out like arena did. Because eventually, everyone will probably get their curses and dump hourglass entirely.
