Invisible Cheater Names

  • I'm the first person to advocate for reporting cheaters with video evidence, and I've done it many times during my time in SoT, often getting the "a person you reported has been banned" message. Well, I just fought a guy whose name was invisible, it wasn't showing with his chat (which he of course spammed since cheaters are weirdo's) and it never showed over his head. I didn't spyglass his ship initially but I'm guessing he had that covered as well.

I could report him with video evidence but it's pointless since there's no identifying aspect of this person. For the record, I came back 5 or 6 times prior to being sailed out of bounds in an effort to get his name. Dude was parked at the beginning of the match with anchor and sails down, seconds later he dolphin dived out of the water next to my ship, climbed the ladder and shot me through the haul before he even boarded. Is season 9 back?

Anyway, lock if you want, but telling me to report is redundant because I always do, and in this case, it's useless, because who am I reporting?

My feedback is this: Something desperately needs to be done. Good luck out there.

  • I'd still report it with as much details provided as possible so that they can potentially look into logs to try and sort out how this sort of cheat would be working. Things like your location and the time of day that it occured - they might still be able to make use of the report honestly depending on the details of their back end and tracking data.

  • @redeyesith

That’s fair, and I had similar thoughts, but the sad reality is that guy isn’t going anywhere until they address whatever specific nerd-hax he’s using. I might report it still, but in the meantime let it be known to the mods that this is happening, please relay.

  • This is one of the reasons I've been saying - whenever a hourglass match starts, we should see a full crew list of the opponent ship in the "Battle Begins" banner. So we'll see at least one person's name. And Rare should keep logs on who's joining/leaving that ship.

I've been matched with invisible cheaters before. While being wiped, I could not get any clear evidence. Thankfully one of my crewmates had a lot of luck / skill to kill them and identify them.

Another reason is, the alt+f4 hourglass matchmaking exploit and the one where they scuttle as soon as we surface - we don't get any rep or battle and we can't identify who did it.

I always use the xbox game bar (on PC) to see the most recent players that I was playing against. You'll very often see players that have like under 30 days of playing, with SoT as their only game.

Hmmm I’ll have to check out game bar capabilities. I used to use it frequently before guilds but these days my crew just jumps onto guild ships for a session. What feature within gamebar shows recently played with?

  • @capt-greldik

If you're on PC, it's Win+G to open it. You'll see recently played, and can see their stats, achievements, hours played, and perhaps most-impotantly, their name :)

This method is useful sometimes, but is inconsistent.

It can be handy as one of the ways to check for tuckers nearby.

However, not all pirates are shown in this list.

You'll also notice that when pulling up the in-game report name list - not all recently met pirate names are shown there. Some of them are just blank.

  • It’s not a cheat it’s a random bug that the cheaters can’t control
sometimes you can see it in the report tab but often it’ll still be blank

  • Next time (whenever I get over the ick of playing against mentally unstable cheaters) I’ll be sure to spyglass and also check gamebar after/during the fight. Hopefully I can get some names that way. I record every fight, it’s discouraging enough to encounter cheaters but doubly so if I can’t even report them.

  • It's insane to me that this is the ONLY game where people can just do anything and there is no internal recording system. They don't even keep chat logs. I can't report someone for being racist unless I have a screenshot of them using a slur, despite the fact that that text had to be sent IN THEIR GAME through THEIR SERVERS. I can't report someone for cheating and have them go through a demo around the time I reported the player and audit his actions. I get that you can't keep everything forever, but a rolling buffer would be nice so we could actually have something that they can cross reference against. I've had people tell me to kill myself but because I didn't record it, it doesn't matter. They have no way to record what happens in game to later audit it, and this is one of, if not the ONLY online only live service shooter game I have seen without the ability to log reported actions and watch them back.

  • @potatosord

Agree. My first online game was Ultima Online, a dinosaur which officially came out in 1997. Even in that game logs were stored and people were frequently warned/banned based on their words.
