Official Fleet System for Groups of Friends (Multiple Ships)

  • Ahoy, Rare!

As a newer pirate, I love sailing with my friends in Sea of Thieves, but we’ve hit a wall when trying to play as a larger group (5+ players) across multiple ships, like two Sloops or a Galleon and a Sloop. The current Alliance system is great for meeting random crews, but it’s tough to get all my friends on the same server to sail together as a proper fleet. I’d like to suggest an official Fleet System to make this easier and more fun for groups!
Idea: Add a "Fleet Setup" option in the main menu where groups of 4-8 players can choose multiple ships (e.g., two Sloops or a Galleon and a Sloop) and load into a server together. To keep it balanced:

    1. Limit fleets to two ships per group to avoid dominating servers.

    2. Require shared voyages or rewards to encourage teamwork (e.g., loot split evenly across the fleet).

    3. lace fleets on servers with other fleets or balanced crews to maintain fair PvP.

    Why It’s Great:

    1. Makes it easier for friends to play together without server-hopping or begging strangers to give up their ship.

    2. Adds epic group gameplay (imagine two Sloops coordinating against a Galleon!).

    3. Keeps the spirit of adventure while supporting bigger crews.

    Balance Considerations:

    1. Cap fleet sizes to prevent server takeovers.

    2. Adjust server matchmaking to pit fleets against similar groups or strong solo crews.

    3. Maybe add a “Fleet Voyage” with tougher challenges (like a mega Kraken) to keep fleets busy.

I know server limits and balance are tricky, but a Fleet System would make group play so much smoother for new and veteran pirates alike. What do you think, Rare? And fellow pirates, would you want to sail in a fleet with your mates? Let’s discuss!

    Cheers,

  • The issue with this is that it would make it possible to make alliance servers super easily, and it would allow people to get their friends to join in to bully others. As much as I would like to be able to play with more friends at once, I realised the idea would be abused far more than used for the intended purpose. Even with the "2 ships" rule that doesn't help. They could spawn the second ship in, invite a friend to that ship, then leave the ship, get re-invited on a new ship, invite a friend, leave the ship, repeat, until every server slot is filled with friends of the main guys second player. The reason it's so hard to get on the same server as someone else right now is because it makes it so much easier to exploit and it keeps players segregated to their own pseudo private servers. As long as no one leaves the server, it's a private server with 0 risk and 100% rewards. Actually more than that because they usually have every player in an alliance.

Two Galleons is already Dominating enough, especially in an alliance.

  • Not for open world play. A fleet system for HG could be fun, but it would have to worlds with zero loot spawns or world events to prevent alliance servers.

  • Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I hear the concerns about fleets dominating servers, especially with only 5-6 ships per server. I agree that two Galleons would be too overwhelming for solo or small crews. What if the fleet system was limited to combinations like one Galleon with a Sloop, one Galleon with a Brigantine, or two Sloops/Brigantines, and matched against other fleets or larger crews? Maybe a dedicated fleet server with 10-12 ships could help keep things fair. Thoughts on how to balance this for everyone?

  • @xboxceopotato The only way to balance it is to make it so you can only have one ship per "alliance" active at a time, AKA the way the game works now. Having 2 ships at all is enough to be too powerful. Not only does it double your firepower or more, it allows you to shoot from 2 angles at once and always have an attacking ship in the blind spots, and even when not, you would be splitting the firepower.

Sounds like you're trying to bring Arena back in a way. I'd love to see how you expect them to get 10-12 ships on one server, when over the years they've been struggling between 5-6.
