Wood crates feel a bit pointless.

  • I'm not talking about the wood you get with it. I'm talking about the crate itself and how it functions. I understand the purpose of the storage crate for collecting a variety of resources. I understand the purpose of the cannonball crate for going to your cannonball barrel and selectively taking out cannonballs and nothing else.

But the wood barrel only has wood in it anyway, so the wood crate doesn't do anything the storage crate can't do. I'd love to see some change to the wood crate that gives it a unique function and makes it feel like it has it's own purpose, instead of just being a not as good version of the storage crate.

The wood crate is very useful, especially on larger ships, but even on a sloop they’re handy. Behind the mast, behind the wheel, on the stairs below, all great locations. They allow for a quick grab of wood without having to go to the barrel. Now consider a galley with the wood barrel on the second level while most of the repairing is on the bottom level, in that case a wood crate is basically a must.

I buy a wood crate every session, and not because I need more wood. Wood crates for the win.

  • @eligibleeel6171 all crates are made somewhat redundant by storage crates once you have them. Only if I wanted to move a specific type in bulk would I bother using the single use ones. I just see them as earlier session versions if you can't be bothered to buy storage from outset.

  • @hiradc

I always start my session with my storage crate kept empty for looting purposes. Once I get another storage crate it first replaces the cannon crate (with the inclusion of some wood), and if I get more storage crates they’ll replace any wood crates. But similar to you, I keep the wood and cannon crates empty for restocking the storage crates.

  • They're good for selling your wood at the end of a session. The rest can go in a karma crate.

I never buy them but plentiful in island spawns.

Also used in merchant bottle quests.

  • Wood crate only has wood, and sure you could do that with a storage crate but not everyone has that many storage crates all the time. If you need wood fast, wood crate.

  • Wood and cannonball crates are both extremely useful when put in the right spots on ships. I always ALWAYS put a wood create behind my wheel when I'm on a sloop so I don't have to waste valuable seconds going to the barrel if I run out and need to fix mast or wheel

  • Look at any high level bilge in galleon PvP and you will understand why. Woods crates placed in strategic positions below deck to always have access to wood when repairing lower deck holes removing the need to go to wood barrel. Using wood crates specifically over storage to remove any chance they would not grab the wood they need while menuing. It's not uncommon to see a bilge use 5+ wood crates below deck on a competitive galleon.
