Feature Expansion Concept List

  • Below is a full-featured proposal containing new systems, event types, faction interactions, and lore-rich progression ideas. These concepts aim to deepen immersion, improve solo and guild content, and reward mastery of the sandbox while remaining consistent with Sea of Thieves’ core identity.

    1. Bring Back the Arena – On-Demand Style

Reintroduce the Arena and Sea Dogs faction using the Captain’s Table as an opt-in, on-demand PvP activity. This preserves competitive play while maintaining server population integrity.

    1. Guild Battles – Dive-In Combat Mode

Introduce 3v3 guild-based battles using the dive feature:

    • 1 Galleon, 1 Brigantine, 1 Sloop per guild
    • Matchmade through the Captain’s Table
    • Objective-based or last-ship-standing structure
    • Creates high-skill, faction-based competition that promotes teamwork across ship types.

    1. Sea Fort Guild Control – Passive Rewards System

Enable guilds to capture Sea Forts by completing them and pledging in the vault:

    • Claimed forts display the guild banner on map tables
    • Passive renown, gold, or rep is granted to guild members active on the same server
    • Strategic benefit for long-term presence

    1. New Tall Tales – Lore-Rich Narrative Content

    The Neverland Saga (Peter Pan)
    • Temporary flight via pixie dust orbs
    • Antagonists: Captain Hook, Jolly Roger
    • Unlocks: Hook's coat, Pan's dagger, Neverland ship cosmetics

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea of Thieves (Jules Verne)
    • Antagonist: Captain Nemo
    • Access the Nautilus, the first submersible ship, powered by completing undersea shrines
    • New weapon: Leyden Underwater Rifle (storm-charged)
    • Unlocks: Diving suits, Nautilus-themed cosmetics, bioluminescent pets

    1. Water Bombs – Throwable Utility Item

    Introduce Water Bombs:

    • Extinguish fires, dumps one buckets worth of water
    • Stored in the throwables pouch, limit of two
    • Ideal for solo play, boarding, and fire-based defense

    1. Solo Ship Type – The Skiff

A small, agile vessel for solo pirates:

    • 180° forward-facing cannon
    • Manual rudder (no wheel), anchor winch (not capstan)
    • One sail, sits low in water
    • Rear harpoon, 3 damage points per side
    • Fast, stealthy, high-risk/high-mobility solo ship

    1. Guild System Enhancements

    Strengthen guild-based community support:

    • Increase guild size to 100 players, 300 ship slots
    • Allow Message of the Day within the Guild Tab
    • Future scope: Guild Faction Allegiance (Athena, Reaper, etc.) with tracked progression

    1. Commendation Tracker UI

Create a pinnable commendation tracker in the HUD:

    • Real-time display of specific commendation progress
    • Toggle via settings or radial menu
    • Streamlines achievement hunting without menu interruptions

    1. Grand Maritime Union Variant – Naval Authority NPCs

Introduce GMU-inspired NPC ships acting as roaming enforcers:

Target stolen loot, Reaper, or Athena emissaries
    • Carry "stolen" loot (e.g., from PvP or stolen voyages)
    • Fly the Reaper’s Bones emissary flag
·• Fly the Athena’s Fortune emissary flag
    • Fly no flag but possess stolen, cursed, or hidden treasures

Only recognize Gold Hoarders, Hunter’s Call, Order of Souls, Merchant Alliance as lawful

Adds organic PvE threat based on faction alignment

    1. Phantom vs Skeleton Ship – Faction Battle Event

Dynamic world event where players join one side:

    • Phantoms (Athena/Ancients) vs Skeletons (Flameheart/Order of Bone and Blade)
    • Choose allegiance by sailing into the zone while representing a faction, otherwise you are targeted by both.
    • PvEvP enabled during battle
    • Rewards: Titles, cosmetics, ship sets themed to each faction
    • Builds lore conflict across supernatural and ancient lines

    1. Ship Curses – Faction-Themed PvE Unlocks

Expand on the idea of Skull of Siren’s Song-style visual effects:

    • Wraithbound Curse (Athena/Ancients): ghostly glow, phantom sails
    • Boneblade Curse (Flameheart): ember-cracked hull, skeletal effects
    • Siren’s Depth Curse: coral-encrusted hull, dripping water
    • Molten Fury Curse: Lava cracks, glowing ember sails, smoke trails from the stern.
    • Unlocked via commendations tied to full commendation tab completions and world events/faction PvE
    • Managed from Ship Customization Chest, no gameplay advantage—visual only

    1. Cursed Grog Barrels – Smugglers’ Faction Buff System

Introduce buff-based cursed grogs, tied to a Smugglers’ Faction:

    • Stored in Cursed Grog Barrels on board
    • Each provides a temporary buff with pirate-flavored side effects
    Examples:

    • Abyssal Ale – Waterbreathing
    • Flameheart’s Draught – Fire immunity
    • Skyserpent Swill – Fall immunity
    • Witch’s Wine – Passive healing
    • Stormrunner’s Stout – Unlimited stamina
    • Gained via PvE voyages, black market trade, or faction rank
    • Limited refills via the tankard.
    • Encourages risk-reward utility use with drunken drawbacks
    • Potential for brew-mixing, barrel upgrades, and Smuggler-themed commendations

    1. Military Recognition Cosmetics – Branch-Specific Honors via ID.me

Allow verified U.S. military members (active duty, veterans, reservists, retirees) to unlock honor-based cosmetics via ID.me integration.

    Each branch unlocks:

    • Sails in branch colors
    • Flags with the official branch emblem
    • Ship trim in minimalistic military style
    Universal title:
    • “Veteran of the Sea of Thieves”
    Branch Examples:

⚓ U.S. Navy – Blue & gold sails, anchor flag
    🎖️ U.S. Army – Olive/black sails, star flag
🛬 U.S. Air Force – Steel & white sails, winged flag
    🦅 U.S. Marine Corps – Scarlet/gold sails, EGA flag
🌊 U.S. Coast Guard – Red, white & blue sails, shield flag
🛰️ U.S. Space Force – Black & silver sails, delta emblem
    • No gameplay advantage. Recognition only. Opt-in.

Thank you for your time and hopefully we can get some of these additional features added.

Bring Back the Arena – On-Demand Style

    Arena is not coming back.

Guild Battles – Dive-In Combat Mode

This would just allow 3 guild crews to take over a server by diving to a battle, and then not diving any further.

Sea Fort Guild Control – Passive Rewards System

Not an idea I like. I'd hate to log in, see all the Sea Forts claimed by larger guilds, switch servers, see all the Sea Forts claimed by larger guilds, etc.
This basically locks smaller guilds/crew out of Sea Fort content.

Passive renown, gold, or rep is granted to guild members active on the same server

So now people in larger guilds get free gold?
Nah. This idea always crashes and burns in other open-world PvP games, like New World.

Grand Maritime Union Variant – Naval Authority NPCs

Introduce GMU-inspired NPC ships acting as roaming enforcers:

No. There are no laws on the Sea of Thieves, so why do we need NPC 'enforcers' to interrupt normal gameplay?

Cursed Grog Barrels – Smugglers’ Faction Buff System

Introduce buff-based cursed grogs, tied to a Smugglers’ Faction:

    Nah. This just breaks PvP.
I'd be angry if I lost to someone with passive health regen.

    Potential for brew-mixing

This is not a crafting or gathering game.

Military Recognition Cosmetics – Branch-Specific Honors via ID.me

As much as I thank everyone for their service; Does the game really need this?
Not to mention the hoops Rare would have to j ump through to set it up.

  • @Guildar9194

Bring Back the Arena – On-Demand Style
    • "Arena is not coming back."

    • Why lose content that could be refreshed.

Guild Battles – Dive-In Combat Mode
"This would just allow 3 guild crews to take over a server by diving to a battle, and then not diving any further."

    • Forced dive after a win would solve this.

Sea Fort Guild Control – Passive Rewards System
    • "Not an idea I like. I'd hate to log in, see all the Sea Forts claimed by larger guilds, switch servers, see all the Sea Forts claimed by larger guilds, etc.
This basically locks smaller guilds/crew out of Sea Fort content."

    • Just go capture the sea fort for yourself.

Passive renown, gold, or rep is granted to guild members active on the same server
    • "So now people in larger guilds get free gold?
Nah. This idea always crashes and burns in other open-world PvP games, like New World."

    • This would be for any size guild and would be countered the moment the fort is captured.

Grand Maritime Union Variant – Naval Authority NPCs
    • "No. There are no laws on the Sea of Thieves, so why do we need NPC 'enforcers' to interrupt normal gameplay?"

    • This would act as any other emergent encounter and is part of established lore, Flameheart came to the Sea specifically to avoid this issue so why wouldn't they follow.

Cursed Grog Barrels – Smugglers’ Faction Buff System
    • "Nah. This just breaks PvP.
I'd be angry if I lost to someone with passive health regen."

    • Same thing has been said with every addition to the game.

    Potential for brew-mixing
    • "This is not a crafting or gathering game."

    • We already cook to enhance meat that we gather...

Military Recognition Cosmetics – Branch-Specific Honors via ID.me
    • "As much as I thank everyone for their service; Does the game really need this?
Not to mention the hoops Rare would have to j ump through to set it up."

    • Most retail stores have this feature without any issues, its the member who does the validation, and honestly it would be a nice feature."
  • @malenos-shadow

Bring Back the Arena – On-Demand Style
    • "Arena is not coming back."
Why lose content that could be refreshed.

Because it's not coming back due to how much of a headache it was to update, and how toxic it was.
    Just use HG.

Just go capture the sea fort for yourself.

Oh yes. Let me go capture that sea fort for myself. You know, while a full crew can be guarding it.
I wish this forum had an eye-roll emoji.
    Sure, let's just tell solo-sloopers to fight 4 v 1 as a counter-argument.
    Nah. Still a horrid idea.

Also, what happens in a server merge where 2 different guilds own the same sea fort?

Passive renown, gold, or rep is granted to guild members active on the same server
    • "So now people in larger guilds get free gold?
Nah. This idea always crashes and burns in other open-world PvP games, like New World."
This would be for any size guild and would be countered the moment the fort is captured.

That was not a counter-argument. It's still free gold/rep for whomever owns it.
Which means Alliance Servers now get free gold/rep.
    Still a bad idea.

Grand Maritime Union Variant – Naval Authority NPCs
    • "No. There are no laws on the Sea of Thieves, so why do we need NPC 'enforcers' to interrupt normal gameplay?"
This would act as any other emergent encounter and is part of established lore, Flameheart came to the Sea specifically to avoid this issue so why wouldn't they follow.

    Because they can't.
Barely anyone gets to the Sea of Thieves.

The whole point of the Sea is 'Do what you want'.
Not 'Do what you want within the law, or be punished'.

This is WHY we come to the Sea of Thieves; To do what we want without laws.

Cursed Grog Barrels – Smugglers’ Faction Buff System
    • "Nah. This just breaks PvP.
I'd be angry if I lost to someone with passive health regen."
Same thing has been said with every addition to the game.

    Not a counter argument.

    Potential for brew-mixing
    • "This is not a crafting or gathering game."
We already cook to enhance meat that we gather...

Cooking is not brewing. Or crafting.

Military Recognition Cosmetics – Branch-Specific Honors via ID.me
    • "As much as I thank everyone for their service; Does the game really need this?
Not to mention the hoops Rare would have to j ump through to set it up."
Most retail stores have this feature without any issues, its the member who does the validation, and honestly it would be a nice feature."

SoT is not a retail store. They would need a way to verify the info.

  • @guildar9194

You do you.... I isted suggestions, if you don't like then cool but if you are so pressed you feel the need to recommend an eyeroll emoji then we aren't arguing from an intelligent place. Ill leave you a thank for your feedback and have a nice day.

    1. I enjoy the idea of arena but I know it was shuddered because it was barely being touched.

    2. This is arena with extra steps.

    3. If anything, sea forts should have a pledge system, but it should only be for Reapers/Athenas, as in the lore the sea forts are used by flameheart to draw power from the sea of the damned.

    4. I want new tall tales so badly, but I also want the old adventures brought back as tall tales. The fact that we can't play Herald of the Flame anymore is a crime, especially with how integral it is to the SoT lore and flameheart coming back.

    5. While I don't hate this, I think it would make fire too weak, and it could be used by boarders to spam 3 buckets of water onto your ship (boarding with a full bucket) making it harder to effectively bail, decreasing the viability of defensive play after a certain amount of water in the ship, changing the dynamic of repairs vs bucketing. Would water bombs be able to be loaded into a cannon?

    6. We have a solo ship, it's called the sloop. We don't need a smaller ship. If you want a smaller ship, use a rowboat. Cannon rowboats and harpoon rowboats fill this niche.

    7. I think guilds definitely need more going for them, but I don't really know if that's it. Do people really use the guild system that much that they need to have it like it's own little message board?

    8. Yes pleaseeeeeeee. I have such bad ADHD that I will start working on a commendation and then get completely side tracked by something else. It's a real problem.

    1. I do actually kinda like this, however skeleton sloops are already FAR more powerful than phantom galleons. Maybe they could make new units, but as they are currently, there is no possible way a fleet of phantom ships could win even against 1 or 2 skeleton galleons. PvEvP can never be disabled in this game so bringing it up as something to add for the mode is meaningless.

11.We sort of have ship curses with special hulls, but I do like the idea as a whole. The issue I see with it is balancing it against the lighting engine of the game. Lit up ships are super easy to see at distance at night without even needing to think about looking.

    1. We don't know even a single thing about smugglers league yet so saying they need buffs or additions is meaningless. We literally know nothing about them or their voyages/missions/commendations. Beyond that, I do not think immunity/healing alcohol is a good idea. It would make some tools and strategies literally pointless. What is the point of firebombs existing if your opponent can just go "nuh uh" and ignore the fire? It suddenly makes one of your resources worthless and there is no way you could have ever known they had that advantage. I don't want to have to look at a health bar full of icons or look at what colour their skin is tinted or some annoying feature to try to see what status effects my opponent has. This is Sea of Thieves, not Final Fantasy 14. Fall immunity? Who cares? Unlimited stamina... is this AI generated? This game doesn't have a stamina system.

    2. For the same reason as there is no national flags in the game, they would not add cosmetics for the US military. It would, like national flags, invite targeted harasment, and it would, as much as you wouldn't want to agree with this, inherently be portraying themselves as aligning with a set of politics and actions carried out by the US military. I can't get into it because that violates the rules on political discussion, but the TLDR is that allowing official US military tied in cosmetics would portray to many of the public that they are inherently supportive of the actions of the military, and potentially the government as a whole. It's not something worth adding for the few people it would "benefit" and it would be seen as Rare trying to push people into the military. "You want this cool gun in the pirate game, you have to sign up to the US military to get it" comes across very very very very very very poorly publicly and makes it nearly impossible to deny any accusation of using the game to funnel kids into the military. Children play this game. And I don't mean that in a "tHiNk oF tHe KiDs" kinda way, I mean it in a "You are only allowed to have this thing you find cool in a video game if you join the US military" kinda way.

  • @potatosord
    9. The stolen loot system would be so annoying, if you pick up a piece of loot and put it down, then someone from a different crew picks it up, that counts as stolen. So people would go around touching every piece of loot, even little tiny artefacts and stuff so they would get NMU on anyone who picked it up. I don't think NMU on the sea of thieves would make the game a better experience. I know they could be seen as emergent features, but I think we don't really need it. NPC ship to ship battles are already plentiful enough without needing to put a different coat of paint on them. As well, they would need to invent a new NPC unit that can bail buckets, adjust sails, understand why it has to adjust sails, interact with anchors, unless you want the NMU ships to just be skeleton ships but repainted.

  • It has to be seen as stolen like that for comms that require you to steal an item. It doesn't even have to be on their boat to be seen as them owning it, they just have to touch it.

  • We do need ship curses, a ghost curse for ships would go well with the blessing of Athenas fortune

  • Okay, I LOVE the ship curses. Imagine different types of ship curses to make your ship look even more unique while not making it have a bigger/smaller hitbox. Just a cosmetic curse.

    1. Areana is not coming back, too many problems and low player engagement. If the current and future performance fixs could work on those old problems I still don`t think rare would change their mind. Best case would be a special event type deal for a couple of weeks a year

    2. Guild battles would be cool and basicly would be areana/HG 2.0. As mentioned it can't be in the main game world as it would allow alliance servers. Simple fix: both teams dive to a world with zero loot spawns, voyages or world events. Once the victor side sinks the last opposing ship. They auto dive back to seperate game worlds.

    3. Sea fort control, idea needs a little work. As for the large guild problem named above, does not track. Big small does not matter with 6 ships to a server.

    4. These are likily in the works

    5. Eat some worms, same effect.

    6. Check out captain falcores concept for this, very similar and looks great.

    7. Leave the cap but make tracking activity easier. I would like two things for guild members: last sailed and last sailded for guild.

    8. Yes PLEASE! Just to be able to pin a couple would be great.

    9. Could do this but how would this be different from a skelly spawn?

    10. Nice idea but it takes alot of processing power to have a butch of ships. Thats why the phantom ships are track based and not free to go where ever.

    11. Ship curses are basicly hulls.

    12. Nice idea, I would like this in the game but via cooking. Add a spice found in the game world to make the over heal on meat give a different affect. Spices are not found in barrels.

    13. As nice as that would be, this is a UK game. I think if they are going to do this they would start there. Plus its a bit polical so not a can of worms they will open. Same deal as country flags.A
