Self-created treasure maps

I tried to play a voyage on safer seas, It wouldn't let me, locked out. Yet on high seas mode it's unlocked. Why? I want to play stories, voyages without potential of loosing chest, keys etc.

I played for hours on high seas because I had no choice, Boat is sunk by reapers who steal chest. Second attempt, I buried the chest, buried the keys so I can gather them all together near the end. Whilst under water in the shrine, I acquire third key and boat sunk. Maps lost. Sail to Island and can't dig them up. Respawn was furthest away possible. Due to no save check points, hours of gaming lost. Why are maps bound to the ship, it doesn't make sense.

Proposal: maps are bound to players avatar rather than the ship.

We have maps on our wheel. This insinuates the maps our on our person. If you're playing by yourself, there is no point burying the treasure if someone jumps on your boat and steals them. Who would leave their maps behind to invite sstealing. No sane pirate would. Perhaps, alternatively a pirate could acquire a snap sack, to carry maps, keys etc. Extra dynamic to the game.

  • Normally the map stick to the player and if your vessel goes down you can still dig it up , but some loot aren't considered as burriable loot that appear on a map so maybe your keys weren't a proper loot. Idk but it seems a little weird

  • I'm doing a FoF, just completed it. I see you sailing in. I decide to hide the chest of fortune/legends by burying it. I go back to my ship, try fighting you, but you sink me. Does this mean you don't get the maps to see where I've buried the treasure?

    Isn’t this the same thread??

  • @bigdog1st For starters, why were your hours of gaming "lost"? Didn't you have fun? You set sail on an adventure, solved puzzles, killed skeletons, found treasure, buried it, fought bloodthirsty pirates. Sounds like you had a great time. and no one can take that away from you.

we can't really talk about what "sane pirates" would or wouldn't do with their treasure maps given that pirates never actually used treasure maps. One pirate buried some treasure and created a map to it once (William Kidd in 1699), the story inspired a popular movie, and since then, burying treasure, drawing maps to it, killing pirates and stealing their treasure map, then following it to dig up their treasure, has always been a fundamental aspect of pirate pop culture fiction. And the concept gets adapted to fit whatever artistic creation (movie, book, game etc.) it finds itself in.

In Sea of Thieves, the creators have (I assume) done their best to fit the concept of stealing treasure maps around things like game mechanics and balancing. That's not to say it couldn't be done better. I'm just curious how you think it should be done instead.

i.e. If not by sinking your ship, how else would you like your treasure maps to be stolen? Would you prefer they drop as loot when you die? If they're placed in a snap sack, can someone steal the sack? If what you want is for the concept of stealing treasure maps to be removed from the game entirely, I doubt you'll receive much support, but if you think there's a better, more interesting, or more creative way it can be done, that's definitely worth discussing.
