Skeleton Curse. Customization options Rework

  • Hello, I wrote a post about this six or more months ago, but since I think season 16 is relevant because it has new cosmetics for this curse, which also can't offer us something unique to decorate our bones, I'm raising the issue of improving the skeleton curse again. (I thought season 16 should have been a great excuse to improve the curse once and for all)
There are pictures in the article, if you don't see them, turn off AdBlock
All photos of skeleton cosmetics used in this article are taken from here or Sea of Thieves website

    Add xD
This post does not talk about adding pirate cosmetics for the skeleton curse, I and many others know that the mimic glitch showed that pirate clothing requires a lot of processing, which is quite resource-intensive. I propose dividing the existing cosmetics into parts by increasing the customization options from 4 to 13 categories.
Why exactly so? Because the method that I propose does not force the development team to invent or develop something new and complex. This path suggests dividing the options of the skull, torso and legs into the following components:

    • Skull: Hat, skull shape, mask, jaw;
    • Torso: Jacket, rib cage, arms, hook, belt;
    • Legs: Trousers, boots, peglegs.
All of the above can be obtained from the already released clothes that came out with season 8.
While as Mr. 'Sonicbob' Stevens said, "The team put a lot of consideration into the initial implementation of the Skeleton Curse back in Season Eight though, to fit within the system we had built for pirates" but it's still not enough, this curse needs a small change that makes a big difference.

    new customization options
This change can be split into three stages of live release to reduce the workload on the team.

    • First of all, the torso of the skeleton can be split, as it is the most divisible part.
    • Secondly, the legs of the skeleton can be split, as it is the easiest and smallest part to split into parts.
    • And finally, the skull of the skeleton can be split, as it is the part that other pirates look at most often (Hi Hans).
This can be released as part of a monthly update over three months.

To understand the whole picture of the changes that I propose to make to the skeleton curse, I created several images that show the capabilities of the curse of the skeleton, which are currently not implemented.

    Skull

    skull

    Torso

    torso

    Legs

    legs

If someone doesn't understand how this happens, I made an example below
    separation

And again, going back to why this is the best and easiest option to improve the curse. Everything is very simple, 3D clothing models are already there, assets for different bone sizes are also already there, all we need is to open the model, remove the excess and export several parts instead of one. The only thing that really needs to be tested is the compatibility between all these cosmetics, as well as hiding some parts of the cosmetics when combining individual clothes. But this is all a trifle compared to if it were necessary to make pirate cosmetics for a skeleton. As I said, this can be easily implemented as two or three monthly updates. Along with this, we will get truly UNIQUE outfits for our bones.

    Outfits with new customization

I also prepared examples of what more UNIQUE outfits we can get if the customization options are expanded according to the text I wrote. With such customization, our bones will be a truly customizable cosmetic product that can compete with pirate cosmetics, as it should have been from the very beginning.

    Other ideas for skeleton cosmetics

(This paragraph was added because I often edit skeleton outfits by adding non-existent cosmetics from skeleton NPCs and these outfits look very good as separate cosmetics)

    Hair and beards for skeletons.

There are several skeleton lords in the game with hair or beards: Flameheart, Graymarrow, Two-Faced Scoundrel, Mutinous Helmsman. Similar beards and hair or others can be added to the jaws and hats section as an analogue of pirate beards and hair.
    skeleton lord

Other Skeleton and Skeleton Lord Cosmetics

In the game world there are 10 skeleton lords and several regular skeletons that have unique cosmetics on their bones and some of their elements would look great on the skeleton curse. As I wrote above, these are hair and beards, as well as some elements: eyes, jaw, arms, legs, shirts and corals.
    NEW cosmetics
I also created possible icons for the gold holder's cosmetics (mask and jaw)
    gold is strong

And finally. The curse of the skeleton has existed for 8 seasons, it is rarely added new cosmetics because this curse has received few players, BUT this percentage of 40 million players is still a large number and to compensate for the lack of new cosmetics, the curse can be made more flexible for customization by making more options for customization as described in this thread.

  • Well I finally rewrote this post. More condensed images and different text. May the flame burn and may the update to the skeleton curse

  • YES!! We really need it.

To add one more image I made for a similar topic.

    alt text

I find it a bit difficult for them to make a change of this size to something exclusive to PVP, I think there should be a discussion about making the curse available to be obtained with PVE (after all, flameheart is not the only one capable of transforming someone), or having two skeleton curses, the current one that would be called Curse of the Skeleton Lord and a variant for PVE whose body structure would be standardized, with simpler cosmetics.

Anyway I love the idea of having more customization, the game needs it.

  • @odin299

    I. Love. You.

    (Not to make it weird)

  • This would be my dream come true. I love this!

  • man there is SO MUCH creativity in this post, its CRIMINAL that its gonna fall on deaf ears and be completely ignored by the devs. I wonder these days if they just auto ignore any skeleton curse improvement posts out of annoyance that the community keeps asking. I mean how dare we have the gall to love something about the game enough to want to see it improved right?
That aside, i really like all the stuff you added. I been wanting gem eyes for my pirate since i first saw the gold hoarder first hand, would be amazing to see them on skelly, personally i had hopes to see a gem hoarder curse cause its in the lore, but i doubt it now.

I really like the various combinations and it just goes to show how much wasted potential this curse has, you didn't even get into the MULTITUDE of existing skelly cosmetics from skeletons around the world too, ashen guardian cosmetics for example, boy howdy would i love to see this kind of variety in crews of skellies, instead of the more or less same types with mild variations :V

  • Love it!

Something I'm surprised that can't be implemented is also rings. I know, I know different skeleton models and needs to be figured out. But if every skeleton had the same hand model why not add rings as an option?

Great job OP, the creativity we need!

They don't ignore it. There are most likely technical reasons why they can't/aren't going to change it, because otherwise they would have done it this way in the first place.

  • This is a MUCH better (and way more plausible) idea than giving skeletons normal pirate clothes. Keeps it unique, while still giving much better customizability.

  • This is great! honestly id be just as happy if we could use out clothes for them as well

  • @blzofozz92 nah that's not very realistic, SoT has literal hundreds of cosmetics and every single one would have to be reworked to fit skellies

  • @d3adst1ck
I gotta wonder why they don't just say that though? i mean they can't be expected to respond to every suggestion or request for change but like, half the community wants skelly curse and HG changes and POSTS about it all the time...yet not once have they come out and said its a technical thing. I suppose it could be a case of them avoiding anything ever negative to keep the games numbers up, coming right out and saying something is NEVER getting updated would put quite a dent in peoples enthusiasm

  • @diluteferret462 They did say when they added costumes that the reason they are a one piece is because they can do things with the character model that regular cosmetics can't. The Skeleton Curse works the same way but it's a multi-piece costume. If they could break this up into even smaller pieces without creating some issue, they likely would have because they already have those types of slots with the normal cosmetic system.

That's why I suggested an option with preserving the cosmetics that have already been released. This option will give the least expenses on development since it preserves the already released cosmetics and the same ease of customization as was intended for the curse.

  • More work needs to be done to both sides honestly. I love the idea of making more segments for the bone curse because that allows us to actually make unique looking skeletons, as opposed to every skeleton pirate under 110 using blind skull, ashen or crimson bones, reaper clothes because they are the only thing to use at that point.

  • @diluteferret462 Imagine if they added more customization options related to other tall tales. Do the shores of gold with skel curse on and get the gold hoarder skull, do pirates life with skel on and get cursed captains hat, so on. They really left a lot on the table with it and there is no way developing stuff for skel curse takes THAT much effort that they can only add 3-7 new things every 2 months.

  • @d3adst1ck I don't think the limiting factor is if its possible. It's just a lot more work, and would require re-working every single thing they have right now, having to make decisions about what parts go to what cosmetic, so on. They would have to bug test every combination to make sure there is no clipping, and some stuff would have to inherently be covered even if it makes no sense, like when you use an upper mask with a beard.

  • @d3adst1ck

They did say when they added costumes that the reason they are a one piece is because they can do things with the character model that regular cosmetics can't. If they could break this up into even smaller pieces without creating some issue, they likely would have because they already have those types of slots with the normal cosmetic system.

Standardized bodies like those of NPCs would solve this problem. It would be infinitely easier to work on clothes for skeletons if they didn't have to adapt them to different body shapes. This is the big technical problem that makes it impossible to create some cosmetics.

Unfortunately they chose to give individuality to the skelly curse through the shape of the bodies instead of variety of skins.

  • This is what Skeleton Curse needs! In addition to more new cosmetics, we should also give the player the will to customize themselves as a skeleton however they want and that's not to mention that we need rings too!

  • Another note about SoT cosmetics and artists. The new picture given for fight nights depicts a skeleton that is in no way obtainable in the game, although the artist who created this illustration clearly meant a skeleton with IN-GAME cosmetics. The skull of this skeleton is completely golden, from the jaw to the head.
    GOLD SKULL!?
But in the game itself, such a combination is impossible due to the fact that the head is completely covered in obsidian.
    sad
This once again confirms that the designers and artists are literally tied up when making cosmetics for the skeleton curse and as I always said, it needs an improvement so that the designers and artists can use their talents to the fullest, giving us amazing things for the skeleton curse.

Message for moderator. I swear that when I entered this thread a couple of hours ago the last message was dated "25 days ago" please don't give me a warn, because a full month hasn't passed🥲

  • I completely agree with this, different shaped skulls would make for a lot more variety especially, and masks would also be a extremely cool feature for the skelly curse too. All these sound absolutely fantastic and I hope Rare takes these ideas into consideration.

  • Some motivation to actually go for the curse would be nice. Just seeing the level requirements at the Bonesmith after some random at Reaper's said "Wanna see something cool?" really took the wind outta my sails, so to speak.

  • This needs more up votes

  • This post reminds me of back when a mimic dart glitch / half-skeleton pirate bug happened to my crew.
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Seaofthieves/comments/1ibbtdq/halfskeleton_pirates/

I like that they've added more skelly cosmetics in this season's updates. Looking forward to more. Don't really care how it's processed.

  • Love all of this! With one addition bone tattoos/carvings for distinction grades of the various trading companies/factions.
