Variations for curses

  • I want to propose a new mechanic for skins, in this topic I will focus on the skeleton curse but it can be applied to general cosmetics, it would be a good addition to all curses.

I will emphasize once again the importance of freedom when customizing, a game that only has cosmetic rewards NEEDS to have good customization, not only varied but as complex as possible in terms of possibilities.

With that in mind, the new mechanic... add variations of the same cosmetic, specifically talking about the skeleton curse where there are only 4 customization slots, make variations of the same skin, reusing the idea but giving the player more freedom.

    Exemples:

    Current cosmetic

By selecting the skin and pressing a button you would change the version of the same cosmetic.

If this were applied to other curses, we could have, for example, 10 types of gold curses, which would not be random as in the past, with the problem of some player not liking them, but would give more variety.

  • Based on how they've added variations to cosmetics in the past (see the HG figureheads or Trading Company promotion rewards), the game doesn't support variations of a single item; they just add multiple items.

Not saying I don't support adding more cosmetics, but that's basically what they'd end up doing (multiple copies of the same item with slight changes) with this idea. They could add a button that would swap between different items within a group, but that would require several changes to support grouping cosmetics together, changes to UI, etc... which I doubt they'd bother with.

Something like that is more Sea of Thieves 2 material, where they'd have a budget to rewrite the cosmetic system to support things that they added later in the games life in the workaround way they are currently doing things like costumes and variations of cosmetics.

Basically - yes to more variety, but unlikely to work the way you've presented

  • It's a cool idea giving people more control and opportunity for unique looks, but I suspect it would require a rebuild from the ground up of cosmetics in which case I'd say not a priority.

  • @d3adst1ck This is actually an old topic that I thought it was cool to bring back, but what really matters to me is that they reuse skins that they've already made with small changes, just having variations of the skins that we have for the skeletons would already make customization much better.

It's too bad to be limited to the obisidian design to wear a reaper hat on the skeleton, or having to wear a bomb on your head if you're going to equip that mask.

  • @lleorb To be honest I don't know why they didn't just split up these cosmetics in the first place. Maybe they didn't want the original store layout to have too many options?

They are obviously limited by the way the cosmetic system was designed, because it wasn't planned to have completely replaceable parts like the skeleton curse requires, so they should have more select-able pieces even if it's just 3-5 color variations of the same item because someone might want a skeleton bottom with green pants instead of red.

  • @d3adst1ck I've always been in favor of standardizing the skeleton, making all bodies have similar proportions, in addition to preferring the bodies of NPC skeletons, I also think that the gain in customization justifies the loss of this individual proportion of each player. It would be nice to have both, but having to choose one, I'd much rather have more clothes and freedom of customization than walk around with a "strong" skeleton.
