Suggestion: Increase the Minimum FOV to 120 in Sea of Thieves for Better Gameplay and Player Comfort

  • Raising the Field of View (FOV) minimum to at least 120 in Sea of Thieves would significantly improve both gameplay quality and player comfort. Here’s why:

Improved Environmental Awareness: A wider FOV allows players to see more of their surroundings without constantly adjusting the camera. In a game like Sea of Thieves, where situational awareness is key—whether in ship battles or on islands—this provides a major gameplay benefit.

More Balanced Tactical Advantage: Players using ultra-wide monitors or modded FOV settings can gain an unfair visual edge. By officially allowing a minimum FOV of 120, the game levels the playing field and makes this advantage accessible to everyone.

Reduced Motion Sickness: A narrow FOV is a common cause of motion sickness in first-person games. A 120 FOV helps reduce tunnel vision and motion blur during quick movements, making the game more comfortable for a larger number of players.

Modern Gaming Standards: Most modern first-person and competitive multiplayer games support FOV values up to or beyond 120. Adding this option would bring Sea of Thieves in line with current expectations for accessibility and player customization.

And that be the problem with say. Surprises

  • I’d like to suggest allowing players to adjust the Field of View up to 110 in Sea of Thieves. A wider FOV can greatly improve visual comfort, spatial awareness, and overall fluidity of gameplay — especially during exploration or ship battles.

However, to maintain balance and immersion, it would make sense to keep the FOV limited to 90 in specific scenarios like when aiming cannons or steering the ship. This would preserve the focused, immersive feel of these moments.

Additionally, offering a wider, adjustable FOV officially would help level the playing field against cheaters who already modify their FOV through unofficial means. Giving honest players access to similar flexibility would be a fair and welcomed change.

Overall, a dynamic and well-balanced FOV system could really enhance the gameplay experience without sacrificing game design or immersion.

Wouldn't those players just have an even larger FoV than they have now - not actually levelling the playing field.

I've seen vids of people using a larger FoV - game looks like shark-poo

  • @lem0n-curry
I get what you’re saying, but the videos you’ve seen are most likely using FoV values way beyond 120 — which totally distorts the visuals and makes the game look terrible (hence the whole “shark-poo” vibe).

What we’re suggesting isn’t to let people go that far. Instead, it would make sense to introduce a reasonable cap, somewhere around 105 to 110 max. That way, players can still benefit from improved peripheral vision and a more comfortable experience without creating a ridiculous visual mess or an unfair advantage. It’s about finding a fair middle ground, not going overboard.

  • @ishigami3659 They've already determined that 90 is what they are willing to accept as a maximum and have said so multiple times. There are many closed threads like this (and I suspect this one will be closed soon as well) stating that they aren't going to increase the FoV.

It’s really a shame… There was definitely untapped potential here. Locking the field of view at 90 is a big drawback for many players, especially when most modern games now offer 110 or even 120 FoV. In 2025, that kind of limitation feels outdated — particularly in a game as beautiful and immersive as Sea of Thieves.

Even without fully unlocking it, just implementing a dynamic FoV system — allowing higher FoV (like 110–120) during regular exploration, and switching back to 90 while on the cannon or at the helm — would already be a great compromise. It would maintain the gameplay balance where needed, while still providing a more comfortable and modern experience overall.

The game still has so much potential, but limitations like this might push some players away, especially those using ultrawide monitors or who are sensitive to motion sickness. Hopefully, they’ll reconsider this decision in the future…

  • The ability to modify FoV beyond the in-game limits was never intentional and has been removed in order to restore the intended settings of Sea of Thieves.

The game is designed for 90 FoV Maximum, anything beyond that looks distorted and broken.

There are no intentions to change this in future.
