Hourglass overhaul/rework

  • Original player here. Let me preface this by saying I would prefer arena come back but if that's never gonna be the case I suggest this instead. First half of this are the problems i see for Hourglass from a players POV, the second half is my proposed solution.

Hourglass needs an update. It has remained the same since its release (over 2 years ago now). Here are my recommendations.

    1. It needs to be a separate game mode as arena was. Yes I know one of the vices of arena for devs was it had its own servers however hourglass impedes adventure servers. It impedes adventure in the ways of...
    • 2 ship slots being taken up on a server

    • false reaper 5s, athena boats, and guild boats that mislead players into hunting ships only for them to dive off the server OR for passive players to leave a server to avoid enemies only to actually get on a server with hostile players.

    • Note the previous point applies to dives in general but I understand it is an massive part of the game now.

    • Major problem being that hourglass crews for the majority, not all but the majority don't interact with their servers. they only dive, fight, win, dive.

    My solution:

    1. hourglass needs its own mode for the reasons previously mentioned.
    2. a timer like arena had (15 minutes) to prevent prolonged fights from runners, sweats, and trolls.
    3. Preset amount of supps already provided to ships (once again like arena) to provide fairness.
    4. storage crates for ships with preset supps for players to use and strategize with. (1 per player- 1 for solo sloop, 2 for duo sloop, 3 for brig, 4 for galleon)

    The Mechanics:

As the match begins, both crews dive out of the water like a regular hourglass match and a 15 minute timer begins. The match proceeds as player fights with previously mentioned conditions. If a boat sinks the match automatically terminates awarding the winner and loser accordingly. Losers DO get minimum rep that they get now (I personally hate this but i guess I understand a loss farmers pov)

Up until this point I've basically described hourglass with a timer but here is the main twist. If the timer expires and neither boat sinks, NEITHER CREW receive any reputation, gold, or increase to their streak. My reasonings behind this caveat are...

    • tdmers can tdm uninterrupted for 15 minutes but aren't rewarded if they don't sink the other boat BUT the other ship doesn't lose their streak

    • prevents stalemates with crews endlessly sniping (crews will be forced to make a risky play or not gain rep if the timer expires)

This modification to hourglass separates it from adventure, allowing players to enjoy full active adventure servers, shortens the matches, and gives tdmers a way to spike matches and tdm. And most importantly provides newer players who want to pvp a way to learn in quick, guaranteed 1v1 matches.

Would love to know what all players think of this and what any devs think of this idea.

  • I personally like the idea of having the current streak mode aswell as a new comp mode with set sups and exclusive rewards.

  • It needs to be a separate game mode as arena was

    1. HG isnt a mode, nor should it be.
    2. Would require it own set of balancing...and the Dev already tried that.

alse reaper 5s, athena boats, and guild boats that mislead players into hunting ships only for them to dive off the server

    What?

OR for passive players to leave a server to avoid enemies only to actually get on a server with hostile players.

    again..What?

a timer like arena had (15 minutes) to prevent prolonged fights from runners, sweats, and trolls.

Thus, who wins may we ask? Timer runs out, nobody sinks. Who is the winner? Can't be a Draw nobody likes Draws.

storage crates for ships with preset supps for players to use and strategize with.

    So everyone is "equal footing?"
But what if, we Dont dive...and Defend..

If the timer expires and neither boat sinks, NEITHER CREW receive any reputation, gold, or increase to their streak.

Nobody likes..Draws or have time wasted. So a Troll, who has nothing to gain. Well still run...and waste the clock, preventing both parties, One whom doesn't care while the other wil be upset.

Had a similar idea some time back (old thread; please don't necro), that would make the existing HG system more fair/balanced.

But if a complete re-work is an option, I think Rare should consider:

1] keeping the defense/passive system without invasion, for players to defend their treasure against the server, for relatively less rep than:
2] multiple modes, offering 1v1 fights, 5 boat FFA naval fights, objective (chest) based fights, and fort TDM; all of which are hosted on:
3] smaller, Tall Tale like instances/maps that remain separate from Adventure, and thus don't require constant alterations as Adventure changes over time.
4] the modes have standardized supplies, time limits, and score systems that are in line with the mode's objectives.

All of this would take an incredible amount of dev time, and would likely need it's own season. But I do think HG is overdue it's own dedicated season. It needs what Arena needed. A variety of content that will attract various playstyles, including casual players, and retain their interest.

  • Wow I don't know why it took me this long to realize that it takes up 2 slots in the server, just for one or both in most causes just to re-dive again leaving 4-3 ships in the server that play ''organic adventure''.
No wonder I keep thinking some servers are completely dead of activity from players.

  • It doesn’t need to be its own game mode, there’s a reason why Arena failed. You want it to meet the same fate? Rare are trying to avoid that!

  • I do not think it needs its own game mode. A couple of changes would be good.

    1. If you raise HG and do forts etc. To defend the server either keeps a slot open for you to be invaded or if the server is full, mirgates you to an empty one. This way defending becomes a thing.

    2. HG servers should be a thing, but just for diving players. You still start in the standard servers but when diving, if not invading you and the other diving ship both enter into an empty server or one with other HG matchs occuring. Devs can turn off world events, loot spawns and NPC to improve server preformance. Once you lower HG you are automatically merged into the regular servers again.

    3. No limit on match time, but if it goes too long have skelly ship spawn with anchor balls to stop runners or meg gets thrown into the mix.

It needs to be a separate game mode as arena was.

No it does not. It's not a 'mode'. It's a tool to find PvP.

  • First thing a mod is gonna say is that a separate game mode other than Safer Seas will never be a thing.

  • So you want arena but call it hg now instead? Ha.

No loser rep? Kill it faster.

No 3rd party/pve interference? Reduce rewards by 1/3. At least.

  • I think that instead of its own game mode that it just needs its own servers to dive into. This way it won’t affect any adventuring or players hunting other players in normal servers but also lets you have a genuine 1v1 fight. I can’t tell you how many times I have had others interfere in a fight between me and my opponent and it kinda defeats the purpose of diving to a 1v1 pvp match.

  • What is being proposed is an entirely different mode.

The whole point of Hour Glass is that it helps people find other crews opting into PvP by choice.

Hour Glass takes place on normal, Adventure servers intentionally, meaning there is no other mode to maintain/update.

The fact that Kraken/Meg or other crews can be involved is intentional as it still takes place on Adventure servers.

Surely, those that want to dive to Hour Glass fights want a fight/challenge? Rather than just 'kicking puppies' through normal PvP.

Hour Glass was billed as a tool to find someone of the same crew size who also wanted to PvP. who also wanted to find someone of the same crew size who wanted to PvP. Nothing more.

  • @look-behind-you

Exactly! However having HG servers to dive into with fewer assets active would improve server preformance. Once you finish your match you can sail to attack another one or dive again so 3rd partying would always be a thing. What must never happen is it being a differnet mode.
