firemaw not fun. reward not worth it. also not enough emissary flag level for killing considering sinking is almost guranteed

  • so ive only done 3 ancient meg fights. first one was firemaw went in without having looked anything up. so it went about as well as you would expect. this was when the season started. so the ship flip plus massive explosions and holes was too much. sailed back to try and recover supplies at least and since meg was still there and fully charged recovering was kind of impossible.

did it again after this update... only missing canceling 1 bite and that bite knocked me off the ship... and i had foolishly put a gun back on instead of the mandatory grapple gun since we dont have a 3rd weapon slow for utility tools like knoes/darts/grapple.

anyway the bite flipped my ship upside down. so even when i got back i couldnt do anything but let it sink thus losing my grade 5. at least i had a rowboat this time. sailed back and finished the fight but killing it put me at maybe grade 2.5 or so? the fight wasnt fun then having to grind more after to finish leveling because of bad programming 3 months after its initial release. i know its a game but your ship should not fill with water when upside down. especially if you cant fix this meg flipping ships. this would allow the player to maybe recover after a 2nd bit that might flip the ship upwright again so we could board and repair.

the other meg fight was much more tolerable though the reward from both seem equally lacking. a lot of low tier loot..... also the scales and teeth are too small or should have an invisible box under them so their models dont clip through the ships deck. could be very easily over looked with where the harpoon is placing them on looting.

i also get its a mutiplayer game so obviously soloing them isnt the optimal way to do it but the reality which you have confirmed is solo is the most common play style. and the game has gotten many updates to scale to crew size but the firemaw especially still seems to need some tuning.

  • Did they confirm solo is most prevalent? I remember them saying they were surprised how many people choose to play solo and are looking at balancing features but still expect this to be 'hard mode'. I don't recall them ever stating it was the most common.

I don't think sinking is guaranteed, I have done them solo although I generally am in a duo. I have sunk early on when they were newly released but if you find yourself being overwhelmed you can just sail away and regroup.

I'm not sure with these how the crew based balancing like world events comes into play, as obviously there are no rounds for it to adjust. I have sunk other ships coming to 'help' under assumption they will simply make it harder. Does seem more aggressive with multiple ships near by

  • @keylessword4029 both ancient megs are scaled to crew size and it is really noticeable when you are fighting it solo and another ship of any size joins the fight area.

Yes firemaw is definitely the tougher of the 2 but after doing about 15~20 of each of them solo and a couple of them on brigs I definitely like the fight WAY more as a solo or duo, the turning speed of the sloop is just superb.

What i do see people doing however is fight megs in suboptimal ways.

Best way to do it is go into the fight zone, raise sails fully and match the rotation of the meg, if you shoot it enough it never blows up and you can also cancel its bites. Is it still a tough fight yes but most certainly doable

  • Sloop with two man is the easiest route for the two new megs. So easy to do.

Brig is defiantly a lot harder, the time inbetween when it bites/detonates is cutdown a lot. So you need to repair very quick. Noticed last night when brigging it for the first time it bit our brig, by the time we finished bailing and repairing it was coming in for another bite or about to explode. So you need to work quick.

It's great fun and action packed!!! I hope they don't nerf it, too much easy stuff in this game.

  • @captdirtyoar said in firemaw not fun. reward not worth it. also not enough emissary flag level for killing considering sinking is almost guranteed:

This is the biggest issue i have with it. I would like to see it do 1 less damage, so you will not be in a long loop of constantly repairing when it bites. I think this turns a lot of people off.
