I came across it before in Mobydick and now it has come up again in Arthur C. Clarke's The Fountains of Paradise. St. Elmo's fire is a weather phenomenon that occurs in stormy seas. A 15-20cm diameter ball of light that forms at the tips of sail masts during large storms. Plasma formed in a strong electric field in the atmosphere. The glow is usually accompanied by a distinct hissing or humming sound. Ancient sailors considered the glowing ball of light, as its name suggests, to be a religious augury. It was seen as a good omen and a sign of the presence of their patron saint. I thought it might be an exciting detail that suddenly appears to those caught in a storm at sea in Sea of Thieves. Just an idea.
St Elmo's Fire
I remember hearing about this once a long time ago, would be a perfect addition to SoT in my opinion! Sounds like a sea based world event or voyage to me. Kinda love what they have been doing with Hunters Call and have suggested in the past there be a giant bird boss that spawns somehow associated with these.
Maybe the boss has a chance to spawn in a storm and you can see the plasma balls from a distance so you know there’s fun to be had
I like cool detail stuff like this, if its possible, the question is if it is possible since this game seems to be under a lot of strain to begin with, and every update seems to break something seemingly unrelated to the addition, or it just breaks the servers as a whole.
If its added though some day, that will be pretty cool.
@goldsmen It's really things like the BB, galleons, and other similar things that put a lot of strain on the servers. Those require many many more calculations that need to communicate with the servers both ways. Things like the seagulls and jellyfish added this season, that are purely visual effects shouldn't put much strain on the servers. I think it'd be really cool to get a few of those things mixed into each season, slowly but surely making the game's world feel a lot more lived in and storied.

Generally i would think so but i have seen a lot of people have a lot of trouble this season and its not seemed like an intensive season at all.
@goldsmen I think that mainly has to do with the changes to how WEs, ships, etc are handled. But only Rare would know.
