Traps

  • For a game that rewards creative gameplay, it really seems to come up short with traps. Putting a cursed cannon ball on a spring trap is cool, but where are the rest of the traps?

Now, I am not advocating for more types of traps to be put in barrels. I am hoping for the ability to be creative with it. Put wire in the barrels. It can be used to set up tripwires or connect it to firebombs or even kegs that can be set up at the entrance of forts or camps to blow if someone tries to sneak in behind you. In addition, connect them to hunting spears that can be set to be slung at someone boarding your boat without enough caution.

Creativity should be the name of the game. Give us parts and let us build cool traps!

Trap + Blunder. It can set off a keg good distance away.

But then again, you can set up these "two" traps and never have them go off.

I love traps and use them frequently. When they first came out I ignored them, but eventually I started tossing them on ladders during fights and while they frequently get blown up and become useless, those boarding my ship are often met with a trap followed by a two-tap as they awkwardly and slowly try to move while being an easy target.

I never put anything in my traps because probably half the time they get destroyed by cannon splash damage or a blunder bomb thrown by the boarder. I need to start experimenting with placing balls in the traps.

Anyway, I’m all for expanding upon traps.

  • I rarely see anyone using traps at all. I don't think i've come across any on enemy ships yet.

They seem to be really more a nuisance than anything. You have more chance of setting off a trap yourself on your own ship then a enemy climbing on board and triggering it.

Honestly, if a trap is on your own boat it should not trigger when you walk through it. Only non-crew should trigger it.

If you leave your boat, in combat etc you have no easy way to get back on board without setting the trap off.

Makes you think if they are worth having or not. Catch 22 I guess.

They're definitely a risk. Tonight my duo sloop crew mate spawned on top of one twice on left ladder. I always call out when I drop them, and I pretty much only play with two other people these days, so at max we're on a brig. They're pretty easy to avoid on brig, and if a sloop crew is on the same page they're not difficult to avoid on sloop either, you just have to use the railing if traps are placed on both sides. I often just put them down on one side based on anticipated boarding, just depends. Aside from trapping my crewmate twice as he spawned in, though, tonight's trappings were a success. I'm not amazing at first person shooter in SoT, I also average like 120 ping with 90 being best and frequent periods of 150+, so keeping them still so that I can shoot them with less difficulty is very satisfying.

Edit, I'm watching my videos, forgot about the two sword wielding pirates I boarded who rushed me while I tossed two traps around the anchor and jumped onto the canvas. That was a trap highlight.

  • They go right back in whatever barrel I find them in.
