As someone who had fought the Red Maw in multiple occasions, it's in my opinion unfair, again my opinion. Me and my buds have tried multiple times on different ships (sloops, Brigs, gally) the explosion ability it has is very unfair, it breaks everything no matter what side it's on. My friends and I had come up with a new idea for it the explosive ability shoulder only do damage to the side it's on (if it's on the right it only damages the right, if on left only does damage to the left side) and it only has a chance to take out one mast. In our opinion the fire is fine. The other thing is change the rate of attack, of it's bite and explosion right after, that might just be something I think should change, like just have a longer gap between the two attacks. That's my opinion
Red Maw
I would stick to the megs that aren't in the high traffic areas and just take your time while really going for the charge cancels with cannon shots.
It's one of those things that is pretty chaotic early on but once you and your crew get in the effective routine it'll be a lot more smooth.
You could probably handle them solo as well. Easier to cancel and the damage isn't so bad.
I've been able to take it out solo five times, I haven't tried hunting it on a crew yet. I don't enjoy fighting it nearly as much as the Barnacled Dread, and I agree that it's just annoying and not the most fun to go against, but yeah if you're able to hit it enough with cannons, it won't explode and you should be good.
@goodjobjoey9526 i have beaten both 7 times now, never sunk to them.
Yes redmaw is the tougher fight but that is only because it can escalate quite quickly.
If you hit it with enough cannonballs it will never explode, since hitting it with cannonballs will make it cool down and prevent it from exploding, however this als means that, at least when solo, you Must also try to prevent it from biting as much as possible, because getting bit can have you busy so much that it will not get hit often enough and thus explode
