Turtling

  • Please don't remove turtling. It's literally a pure skill strat using no glitches or exploits. There's a list of spots that are actually exploits and you actually can't sink in. Removing that is fine. But don't remove the spots that are completely fair. All you have to do is board and move the ship, the point is just we're not gonna let you do that for free. There's nothing unfair in that though. It's the same level as someone forcing you to go parallel, or forcing you to sail them out of bounds, or forcing you to fight with your mast down, etc etc. You guys shouldn't limit how tools are used in the sandbox, if the use is fair.

  • @fysics3037 Ahoy matey!

From what I can see there are no plans to remove "turtling"...

It's the spaces on islands where you become unsinkable and make fights VERY unfair that the team are trying to tackle here.

  • @musicmee that's a solid change! Would just hate to see good strategies removed, and the wording didn't make it very clear.

  • I think Turtling IS an exploit though.
Imagine wedging your ship where no matter how many holes you put in it, it cannot be sunk due to water/ground levels.
It's a cheesy tactic where the only possible metric of winning is boarding, camping and hoping you camp them for 5x + spawn rotations, giving enough time where you can pull sails and wedge the ship out of the spot.
Already being a boarder you are at a dis-advantage from the get go. It's really not fun at all and nowhere near a 50/50 start where strats can be played out. One starts with a massive handicap, the other doesn't.
One has to board and keep a camp alive whilst juggling breaking the ship free of the exploited area.

Turtling in my mind is playing defensive when your hurt and bilging fending off boarders finding an opportunity to put pressure back and recover.
Wedging your ship in a specific spot where it's unsinkable is once again not turtling in the traditional sense, but exploiting, and that needs to go for good.

Honestly I don't just get why those players don't arrange a TDM or a campwars, instead I think this is also touching griefing territory.

  • Places like the kraken’s fall brig spot or the dagger tooth outpost sloop spot should absolutely get removed. Saying all you have to do is pull the boat out is a disingenuous cop out. All you have to do is wipe the whole crew at the same time to get the time to raise the anchor then you have to defend the raised anchor that’s easier to drop from the crew that’s spawning on that boat. While you’re trying to not let their anchor drop you also have to raise and repair the masts if they are down and defend the guy trying to harpoon them into a place where they can sink before starting the naval battle to actually sink them. The people in the spot are at a significant advantage and the invading players a significant disadvantage and that imbalance absolutely should’ve been patched out a while ago

  • Think it's worth clarifying. I'm assuming op means some people practicing tdm by parking where only their back end is exposed so can't be hit enough to take on large amounts of water. This is very different to spots where they physically can't sink without the ship being moved.

  • Them removing this should have a 100% approval rating lol

  • @hiradc yes that is correct

  • yea 100% this tactic as described should 100% be removed from the game

  • Any tactic where you use the environment to prevent your ship from sinking or gaining water, therefore gaining a considerable advantage, should be removed.

Whether it's beach turtling (as apposed to the other kind of turtling out at sea) or putting your ship in a shallow pool on certain islands, those players know exactly what they're doing and it's very bad sportsmanship.

It's not just third party software cheats but tactics like this that contribute to the decline of Hourglass - as folks get tired of having to deal with people cheesing the mode for easier wins, so less people play. If folks want Hourglass to be popular again, it's things like this that need to be addressed to bring balance back to the mode.
