Dear Microsoft and/or Rare, I am writing as a passionate gaming enthusiast and a potential player of Sea of Thieves. Although I know I’m absurdly late to this news, I was very excited about the release of Sea of Thieves on PlayStation consoles, but I am concerned about the exclusion of the PlayStation 4. While I understand the focus on current-generation hardware like the PlayStation 5, I believe there are several compelling reasons to consider a PlayStation 4 release as well: 1. Large Install Base: The PlayStation 4 still boasts a massive install base. Excluding this large audience means missing out on significant potential sales and player engagement. Many players may not have upgraded to a PS5 yet, and by releasing on PS4, you would be opening the game to a much wider audience. 2. Proven Capability: The PS4 has proven its capability to handle complex and graphically impressive games. While some graphical compromises might be necessary, the core Sea of Thieves experience could certainly be delivered on the PS4 hardware. Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 demonstrate the PS4's ability to run demanding open-world games. 3. Community Expansion: Releasing on PS4 would significantly expand the Sea of Thieves community. More players means more opportunities for cross-platform play (if implemented), creating a more vibrant and engaging online experience for everyone. 4. Existing Xbox One Support: Sea of Thieves is currently available on the Xbox One, which launched around the same time as the PlayStation 4. Given that the game runs on the similarly aged Xbox One hardware, it seems feasible to bring it to the PS4 as well. Both consoles are of the same generation and have comparable capabilities. This existing support demonstrates that the game's core technology is compatible with hardware of that era. 5. Positive Public Relations: A PS4 release would be seen as a positive move by the gaming community, demonstrating a commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. I understand that development resources and optimization are important considerations. However, I believe the potential benefits of a PS4 release, in terms of sales, community growth, and positive PR, outweigh the challenges. I urge you to reconsider your decision and explore the possibility of bringing Sea of Thieves to the PlayStation 4. I, along with many other potential players, would be incredibly grateful. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Andrew Mojica
Playability
Older xbox consoles make sense in a way that older PS consoles really doesn't.
Setting that aside I don't even know how well PS5 is working out long term. Everyone knew they would sell games but I haven't seen anything public to suggest that retention is good at all.
Rarely see much feedback from PS5ers and when they are posting it's often about long term disconnect issues.
It was a big deal to happen and it's great to have more people involved but I'm not convinced that is turning out to be what we all hoped it would (long term).
and Sony really seemed like they were the ones in the lead for decisions being made for that deal.
