How to encourage people to do the Skull of Siren Song voyage after being done with commendations tutorial

  • The Skull of Siren Song was terribly unsuccessful. The only reason to do it is for commendations, and once you're done with them, you won't do one ever again; even if you find someone doing it, you won't come pick up a fight because you won't want to go through the trouble of going up to Briggsy.

Now why is that? The answer is simple: it does not give any kind of progression at all beside a pouch of gold coins once you are done with the commendations.
Briggsy gets the siren skulls for Ramsey, so why is it you don't get Athena's Fortune reputation and emissary bonus when turning in the skull? If this were to happen, I'm sure it would bring back interest for the voyage and encourage people to begin it and fight for it as it was intended. Also, you should be able to sell it to the Reaper's Bones for half the price or something.

Also, not being able to turn in the skull if you didn't have the voyage voted up needs to be fixed. In fact, we shouldn't have to vote on the voyage for these things, we should be able to see the beacons at all times, or at least the markers on the map table. Make it so the only thing voting does is give you the maps, a closer respawn and the beacons. Make it so we can see the markers on the map and are able to hand in the skull if we don't have the voyage up.

  • @mermaid-aze add it to the list of features Rare added to the game and then proceeded to abandon...

We don't need a new thing added every season Rare we would love to see changes like this to Skull of Siren Song, HG revamp, Devil's Roar revisited, Sea Fort Defense options, revamping Thieves Haven, Hunter's Calling...

Revisiting these features and improving upon them is what the game really needs more than anything!

The SoSS was a really good concept but the way it was executed after overhyping the community about it made it sink like a rock.
I really want more updates focused on reworking outdated features like season 11, that was the peak of gameplay improvement. It was only a "technical" update and yet it revived the game and interest for adventure more than seasons 13 and 14.

  • Similar to HG
Why would anyone do it once you gotten the curses? Unless you enjoy the pvp stuff (very few)

  • 2 things to fix the SoSS.

1). Get rid of the opt-in setup. Make it so that once it goes live on a server, everyone just has it in their quest radial and it is a red quest or some sort of unique PvP esque color. Further, add an option to the map that allows you to click and "provide instruction". From there, the normal Briggsy animation will take place.

2). Make it progress faction rep. Kind of like a mermaid gem or something, make it so that handing in the skull to Briggsy nets you faction rep associated to whichever Emissary flag you're flying with the associated Emissary bonus, or make it give randomly selected faction rep if you aren't kinda like a gem. You've got 500 levels of progression for each faction at this point...why not add another means for people to progress it? Especially when that means is high risk.

  • @burnbacon Dude you actually don't offer any constructive feedback to any posts don't you...

Like his title literally is posing the question how do we get people to do it after finishing the achievements linked to it...

Where he then proceeds to offer some possible solutions.

Like at least read the original post before posting dude you're just saying stuff without even acknowledging what was said before. Better to not post on a topic then to just say something completely unrelated just because you feel the need to post on every topic...

    @sweetsandman
I heavily agree with both these points, I'd even go as far as once anyone starts the voyage it notifies the entire server in someway just so people can be made aware. If people see another ship sailing w/ the item and they happen to be close to it or the turn in island they would be far more likely to engage.

And yeah a PvP voyage like this definitely needs to offer a lot more progression. Considering the time it takes + risk the voyage needs to be on par w/ a world event in terms of progression provided for rep/gold.

  • SoSS needs a rework with its rewards, for sure. For the people that are interested in cosmetic progression it should continue to give that type of reward. For people who are interested in getting an in game reward like the horn of fair winds / or maybe an unlocked skull weapon without the slowing-boat-curse that would also be preferable to players like me.

I really wish they'd give sea of thieves a bit more 'roguelike' treatment, where players who accomplish things (both pve and pvp) on the server get small temporary perks and powerups (like the horn of fair winds, wraithballs, mega kegs) to keep on their ship just for that session or until they sink. It already happens with a lot of the PvE world events but they should extend it to some of these other activities too.

  • Make it so that once it goes live on a server, everyone just has it in their quest radial

Sorry I don’t want something added randomly taking up space.

Maybe they should turn into a “secret voyage” that spawns up somewhere randomly. Player or players discover it and activate. (Only emissary grade 5 can find them)
Now do what everyone seems to agree, give rep for certain faction. Maybe depending on the emissary you have raised.

  • Imo they should have stopped the cof comm at grade 5 and put it permanently back in the fort of fortune

then put a cof in the BB but require defeating it or even captaining it to unlock it

and then add 30 (successful turn ins) to the siren song commendation every season up to grade 5

these few simple changes all made together would have helped out multiple pieces of content while making Siren Song relevant again.

  • Remove the benefits of not doing it.

Closer pvp respawns and an extra indicator for pve lol.

I roufinely start it all the time just to see where it is so I can avoid the action....

  • They could purposefully make it a useful piece for other world event.
E.g. Use the skull like a key, to open a hidden 2nd treasury / vault in certain world events.

Or make it so Briggsy only takes the gem out of the skull's eye and restores + upgrades the skull's juice or something so that it becomes purely a weapon that can't be sold. Maybe just give it the ability to slowly restore the juice when in water after the quest has been completed.

Just use the "stash" feature if you don't want to see it in your radial. Simple.

I don't think making it opt out vs opt in is going to change popularity; all you're going to do is annoy more players that don't have interest. It's a net negative change.

The reason more people don't do it is because the time it takes to sail all over the map doesn't match the reward. Reduce sailing time or increase the reward and you might improve participation. Trying to force it upon everyone isn't going to work.

  • @d3adst1ck Meh. I think it would bring more awareness and engagement if it was an opt out vs opt in. Maybe not. Who knows. Rare likely won't change the mechanics of it anyways.

100% the more important bit is making it worth while from a rep reward perspective. Right now it's highly disappointing.

I know that when they at least made the Guild rep reward addition, I was so excited. Got to Grade 5 Guild Emissary, did the SoSS, and was expecting Emissary bonus rep and gold aaaaand nope...just a measly amount of Guild rep with zero Emissary bonus.

    Such a disappointment.

I think the giant glowy note on your mast that spawns a talking ghost on your ship who monologues for 30s is lots of awareness. People are more than aware of this voyage.

They don't do it because it takes too long and rewards too little. Adding emissary boost would probably help quite a bit, but I think the way it spawns some of the digs and the final drop ends up being spaced apart way too much. I don't know how to fix this exactly without making the ending location too predictable (which would also make it much easier to camp) but sometimes Briggsy will end up on an island that is 2/3rds of the map away from where you unlock the chest.

Are they? I've come across plenty of people who have no idea what it is. Heavily in the early days of SoSS...I would get on people's ships and ask them "hey why aren't you doing this" and 9/10 I'd hear "what's that"...and then I'd explain it and blah blah.

You have to remember the casual player in this game is WILDLY unaware...of pretty much everything...

I wonder if I did that same experimentation today if I would get the same responses I got when SoSS launched. I'd guess yes...but...maybe somehow the casual players have gotten more aware of their surroundings.
