Disappointed with Ghoul and Glory

  • With the S14 launch being what it was, I was really hoping the Rare would at the very least make a cool Halloween themed event. The Ghoul and Glory weekend is a HUGE disappointment to me and I really hope they do better in the future, but I won't hold my breath since the last couple of years, Halloween has been a bust for them.
I appreciate the free bucket that we get for logging in, and the 2x multiplier.. but what I was really hoping for was actual things to do for the event like they did long ago!
The Festival of the Damned and the Fury of the Damned events come to mind. Having a checklist of a few things to do to unlock cosmetics or titles for holiday events is the best part of these "events". Simply logging in to claim a reward just doesn't feel like an event. Not even having Twitch drops or event voyages is kinda strange. The voyages they give are already accessible to PLs.. so I guess I was just hoping for more substance.
I really wouldn't even care if they simply just copy and pasted the Festival of the Damned events from prior years, or added old voyages, like Reaper's Run or Black Powder voyages.
I know Rare has a lot on their plate with fixing stuff, but I think them putting a little more effort into special holiday or regular "events" will go a lonnng way with the community. At least, it would for me.. Anyone else share these thoughts? Or are events just too much to ask for these days?

I'd love to have Black Poswer Runs of a Reaper Run Voyage, but I assume those were taken completely taken out, so putting them in again would take some effort, including testing if it conflicts with the current content &c.

They're probably busy with fixing S14 ASAP and making sure S15 will have a less problematic and in time start. It's not like they're sitting on their hands / twiddling their tumbs.

  • It's pretty much impossible to have a season that has as many issues as 14 and it not have negative effects on future seasons too.

Unless they do delays for whatever is coming in 15 I think that'll be a rough landing too.

Imo sot is at an age and in a situation that they really don't even have a choice anymore, stuff has to get fixed, improved, and released in better condition.

No extra time or resources for events imo. Beyond just the gold cheese stuff and a cool cosmetic here or there for logging in.

  • @wolfmanbush That sad thing is that this has been the case for years now, not just with S14. It's not like they have just recently been "working" on fixing the game. I feel like it's been a mess for quite a few years now. I feel like it's been a massive drought of content since season 8 and their excuse has been prioritizing fixing the game. Yet, devs also stated in the most recent video they released that they are still going to focus on content for players, since that is how you keep people involved in a live service game. It seems like a simple fix is just to reuse old content that people actually enjoyed when it comes to holiday events.
What's so hard about doing a new Festival/Fury of the Damned event? For a live service game, it's kinda crazy they wouldn't have it on their calendar, considering Halloween happens every single year and they set a precedence having banger Halloween Events in the past.
To me, it honestly feels like it's a skeleton crew working on the game now, but hopefully that's because they have SoT2 cooking or something else that's massive coming out. Here's to hoping.

14 is different because it's more of an access issue.

Typically what will happen is a season is ultra buggy or ultra cheese filled from exploits. Negative happenings but stuff is still there.

This season was a ongoing delay with a chunk of the features which turned into more being removed and now they temporarily put back in a polarizing exploit just to deliver part of the crouch feature.

Sometimes business gets to the point where you wanna serve pizza but the only thing realistic is hotdogs.

  • @lem0n-curry I never said they were sitting on their hands. I actually said they have a lot on their plates. It still doesn't mean they can't have a pre-planned Halloween event, like they did in the past. It's not like the holiday came up out of the blue.. So, if I was them, I would still have a Festival of the Damned planned for each year, because it's a tangible event, just like the Festival of Giving, that players can look forward to. Especially considering that S14 launched so poorly, this would of been a great way to alleviate some of that negativity.
Putting anything back in the game, like Black Powder Runs, would take some effort, but it doesn't mean they shouldn't do it. I find it sad that as a community we've been in this state of either "don't add anything until the game is fixed" or "please add more stuff, because it's been a content drought" for years now. Here's to the future!

  • @wolfmanbush that still shouldn't matter for holiday events. Here's why I think that: It happens once a year. They know it's going to happen. Therefore, if the Festival of the Damned worked in the past and was well received, they can bookmark it and just add it back in every October-Nov. Just because a season launched poorly, doesn't mean that they can't still keep the event. Furthermore, they did have an "event" called Ghoul and Glory, that is still going on.. but all we got was a bucket for logging in. So, my point is, just have us do a few things to unlock the bucket to make it feel like an actual event. I.E. light braziers with different colors around the map and maybe complete a FoTD, and boom you get the bucket. I'm not asking for new content, because they have all of this awesome old content that they just don't want to bring back.. Anyways, I feel this year's and last year's Halloween event was massively underwhelming, and while some or most probably just don't care anymore, I still hope they do better in the future. I firmly believe that holiday events are a crucial way, besides seasonal updates, for retaining and getting people back into SoT.

I think people care, I think people like fun events and miss events of the past.

Just in rough shape right now, interest in SoT is about as low as I've ever seen it and I've played through it all. Even drama farmers are working shorter shifts in sot this season.

We don't know anything about their internal numbers and expectations but on the outside it's rough.

If they get themselves into a better situation then maybe those fun events can return down the road.

I do think it's good that people voice their support for some of the events of the past though, lets them know that there is still interest in them.

  • @thamb0
Wait.. There was a Halloween event outside of just giving us one bucket skin?

boosted rewards and a couple of voyages for people that aren't pirate legend yet (pirate legends already have access to them)

active until nov 4, 10am UTC

  • but what I was really hoping for was actual things to do for the event like they did long ago!

There main focus from actual Events has been Seasons. Even Flameheart in one of the Tall Tales pokes fun at this.

Yeah that was a huge let down.

I know Rare has a lot on their plate with fixing stuff

Pretty much this. Players want them to focus on "stuff" but when they focus on stuff, they will neglect other stuff and afterwards, as you proven. The community will complain because they didnt do this because they were focused on something they thought the community wanted more.

  • Honestly it was massively shadowed by all the server issues and updates leading up to it to the point I had seen zero comms actually mentioning it beforehand.

It shouldn't be hard to bring those back specially the black powder runs which were only removed with the change of the quest system and feels more like they were left to the side because there wasn't a proper faction to link it to like the Ashen key and Ashen chest since it was connected to Bilge rats and costs doubloons.
Though I guess there would probably be necessary to make a few tweaks with the way islands are chosen.
I believe most of the code is still set to the side or in an old version because it's a programmer taboo to delete code, you either comment it out or move it away.
