Sea of Thieves 2? Thoughts and opinions? [Fun talk]

  • For some reason I have been hearing people state that a SoT 2 could be in the works the past few weeks.
I'm not sure entirely if its solely because of content creator CaptainFalcore mentioning it, so everyone else is a result.

Ok let's say for CERTAIN SoT 2 is being made and confirmed.
What exactly will change compared to the game we currently know?
I heard the argument that it could be compared to Overwatch 2, meaning, the game stays relatively the same (Same map, lore, quests etc.) just room for improvements and expansion if need be.
Point is SoT2 might not be completely Drastic as one may imagine, ship types and functionality may be the exact same as it is, is that a good thing, or would you love to see a completely new design for ship types and new metas formed around it in your opinion?

Will it purely be Adventure like it currently is again, and we will we have another gamemode added like Arena, but actually pushed more in terms of ideas and stability? Do remember they blamed low player count as an excuse to remove Arena, when in reality less people played because of how bad it got with bugs and lack of updates... Ez blame

Will SoT 2 just be a bigger map with current lore expanded on, if it's a bigger map, could ship size per server increase to say 16? How would that work out for balancing purposes, and how would they accommodate for players that just want a safe space to PvE? Safer Seas again? Regarding PvE, new NPCs, monsters treasures etc?

Also take this point into consideration, people tend to forget that it's still the same devs developing a new game, and the consequence of that is keeping their biases and agenda the same. Same for Community Managers who have also been under the spotlight the last few months for very questionable comments and decisions.

SO do you think SoT 2 is coming?
I doubt anyone has evidence to this, but what hints do you point at and think this could become a reality and most Importantly , what will SoT 2 entail in your imagination?

With SoT approaching its 10 year support mark, it wouldn't be far fetched to say SoT 2 has been under-development, there's really only 3 years left on that 10 year quote...
I myself see no evidence of it, they are working on Everwild, I don't see open positions on their website for more artists/developers to hire, Linkedin also gives clues that there isn't an uptick on recruitment, in contrast those are all dead giveaways that company's are hiring for a new title by nature...

This is a fun topic/discussion, nothing more, nothing less.

  • I really don't know why people think SoT 2 is a thing.

Games take years to be released after being announced and that's if things go alright.

I can always be wrong but I've never thought SoT 2 was gonna be a thing and there has never been anything that made it seem that way imo.

This will ride until the ones with power decide it's not profitable enough and everyone moves on to the next thing.

I'd have no interest in a SoT 2 but I do think there are a lot of things other devs/the industry can learn from SoT, both positive and negative and I think even better sandbox live service games can be created in the future because of the successes and struggles of SoT.

SoT has done some things wrong imo but it's also done a lot right.

I think a part of SoT's legacy will be the cool games that it will be the inspiration for down the road. Just not in the form of SoT 2.

  • I don't know what it takes to develop a game or to upgrade a game engine. Is it the same amount of work?
All I know is sea of thieves is the most fun game I've ever played and I am 50 years old. I also know another thing: it is the most unstable game I've played in my life. At minimum they need to fix it. So the question is: can they fix everything in the game with the current game engine? Or it's not possible even if they have the resources etc? It will get more unstable and unstable as they add things to the game. They might have to start from scratch and build on a new game engine, for now we can say for current GEN consoles. I don't really care if it's called sea of thieves 2 or Sea of Thieves 4K or whatever. Seems like they got to the point where it's really hard to fix and add things and they need a new foundation and someone with more programming knowledge may chime in if this means a totally new game or they could swap out the foundation of this game so they can further build on it.

  • The reason, I believe, why a lot of these rumours are spreading about a sequel right now is that it feels like something secret is going on at Rare. We don't see a lot of the same old faces on camera anymore, or developer insights (such as on the podcasts), and there isn't really a lot of communication outside of SoTNews and the occasional State of Play posts. The perception is that the team working on Sea of Thieves has shrunk, a lot.

It may be that Everwild is taking a lot of focus at the moment, or it could be something else entirely new on the horizon.

I just don't see them doing Sea of Thieves 2, but I could see them upgrading the current engine to UE5 with all its benefits. However, that's not an easy task either, as SoT uses a lot of customisations to the UE4 engine. So they would need to ensure those are compatible, or find alternative solutions. As difficult as that may be, it might be worthwhile considering the current state of the game.

    Or like Pirates Life...Past Year?

What exactly will change compared to the game we currently know?

Engine, Servers (I think) and such.

I heard the argument that it could be compared to Overwatch 2

Pretty much that how most 'upgrades' work. With a few minor or big changes how the game runs, could also see boost in server population.

Do remember they blamed low player count as an excuse to remove Arena, when in reality less people played because of how bad it got with bugs and lack of updates... Ez blame

Fact nobody played it because of how super toxic it became and majority of reports against players were from Arena.
Go into Arena to fight for a chest and win points, only for all ships and even your crew dont wanna do that...and make up own games.

SO do you think SoT 2 is coming?

If not announced by next year, Im seeing SoT 2 as a Chapter Two of the game itself. FlameHeart is defeated by the Endgame of SoT and we do some crazy stuff that expands the SoT shroud.

  • We've enjoyed SoT, but none of us are touching SoT2.

  • The problem with making sequels to live service games or MMOs is that it is not enticing to your existing players. You are asking them to start all over in a new game that is similar to the one they are currently invested in which is a pretty hard sell. Most sequels to these kinds of games have lower player counts than the original, which makes investing in making them much less attractive.

It's why a lot of them just try to stay alive with basic maintenance updates for as long as possible until the player base dips enough that they can consider whether it's time to pull the plug or invest in an overhaul that would force them to change their minimum requirements (since no one is playing, cutting out larger playerbase on min. spec isn't a big deal).

I don't think Sea of Thieves is at that point yet.

  • I honestly feel like Sea of Thieves, even near the end of its development life, will carry on indefinitely in the same vein as Team Fortress 2.

There's a reason there's no TF3, after all. Other than Valve clearly being allergic to the number 3. 😝

A lot of people mentioned the ability to transfer your pirate profile to SoT 2. but it also begs the question what SOT 2 is, and if those achievements and cosmetics are even transferable to the new content...

A game this old normally shrinks the dev team as they are not needed anymore for massive content releases, even seasonal content a group of junior artist can honestly make those.
I know a prop artist that works in the games industry and laughed at how lack luster seasons are, he said he could model that blowpipe, harpoon gun and throwing knives in less then 4 hours, and have an animator and technical dev mimick the functions in a days worth of work. Meanwhile it takes SoT team weeks to do that and pray it doesn't break things in the process.

I think that's just a massive unrealistic task at hand.

  • @th3-tater
Depending on what it includes and offers, I beg to differ.
The game is so unique after 7 years there's still nothing that challenges it.

  • @veronik5682

I don't want to play FOMO again is the main issue.
FOMO is the main reason our household plays SoT still, and it kinda sucks for that.
Recently stopped bothering with Twitch drops. Haven't bought a Plunder pass in a year or so.

Do realise that YOU create the FOMO and no one else.

People who have 6k hours in this game still rock with default weapon skins sometimes, matter of I fact I'd argue most players don't touch 90% of the skins that they unlock.
Like for real who uses the ghosts weapon skins when it takes up 65% of your screen?
I don't think I ever encountered someone pull down another person because they missed out on a cosmetic drop. Nobody cares + the twitch drops have been appalling for a good year now.
