The UI for the cosmetic chests has been a point of contention for many people, especially veterans who have a nearly complete collection of every cosmetic item that has ever existed. I don't feel I can comment on how the other cosmetic items should be sorted, but there is one that comes to mind that I feel could be sorted very simply: titles. I haven't played the game nearly as long as some others who I would consider 'veterans,' (e.g. year 1 players, people with ten thousand hours, etc.) yet I have almost 16 pages of different titles in my inventory, and it can be difficult to navigate if you can't recall when the title was added to the game, which is what inventories are sorted by. I imagine there are others with almost twice as many pages of titles.
I think the UI for the title section could be reworked by dividing them into menus based on their associated trading company. It would look a lot similar to the pirate log, where you select a trading company and any associated titles. For example, a player wanting to equip 'Legendary Sea Dog' would go to the Athena's Fortune tab and select the title. Or, if you wanted to equip the new 'Hot Shot' title, you would select bilge rats, then the subsection 'The Flame Rises,' and select the title. If Rare is looking to improve the UI in the future, this could be a good starting point for one of the most abundant cosmetic categories.
