Overall consensus on the new BB event

  • Hi all, this is more for my own personal interest, but perhaps Rare could use the responses to make improvements.

I've seen a lot of posts and comments on both the forums and social media in which people say the new BB event is either too difficult or too easy. If I could do a pole to get the general opinion I would, but I don't feel like it would cover enough info in it.

If you're willing to share, could you maybe point out what you find easy/ difficult about the event as well as the ship/crew size you had at the time?
I'm asking you do this as it may help make things clearer to others, for example: I find the new event quite difficult because I'm a solo slooper, but that's because it isn't really intended to be done solo.

If you share, I'd really like to hear from you!

  • AI Burning Blade is too easy. Player controlled with 3-4 crew members seems very difficult to take down. Not necessarily a bad thing, I do wonder whether they need to alter some of the balancing for larger crews so the anchor takes longer to raise or masts only taking one chain like a normal Galleon.

The exploits however need patching asap and possibly some resets/bans on the worst offenders. I saw a post from Frogfish mention capping the ritual streak, that would be a good band aid fix until they roll out the fix.

These things aside, the event is really enjoyable, generates some great PvP and the art/sound teams knocked it out the park.

  • Overall it's been fun seeing servers race to the new event as soon as it spawns. I've only sunk it once as part of a brig crew but we didn't get to claim it as another brig crew had boarded it and were camping the table to vote as soon as we sunk it. I did steal a few Chests of Fortune from it as solo slooper, just shoot myself over and grab it when i see the event popping up. It's been great to make progress on that commendation.

Only negative for me is the fact you need to do 8 forts on it and then sell for the achievement, since i always work towards 100% achievements on Steam. Doing 8 forts (legitimately without exploiting) takes a hefty time investment when you combine it with also capturing the BB and defending it against other players, and you have to do this 10 times which is excessive. You can chip away at other achievements in smaller sessions, so this is kind of a first in that they require you to play big sessions which not everyone can do. My suggestion is to change that particular commendation to 4 camps. Doing that 10 times would be fine.

  • I feel like it killing other world events really ruins the server for anything else. Like if you want to do any other event and the BB is active... That server is dead for hours unless you actually want to go try to fight the crew in control.

I've only done it once myself but as a duo sloop the fact that the skeletons don't even do anything in terms of helping with PvE stuff. Like a meg spawned on us and sure they helped repair allowing us to focus on canons but still... AI skeletons at forts and islands will attack megs all the time yet on the BB they wont?

The fact that the BB is subject to server merging just like every other ship... Considering we have so many options to merge off a server now I don't think the game needs the forced merges any more. But the BB being a world event and crippling a server & it being able to merge kinda removes potential fighting back if they sink some crews then they could just merge off to safety. Also the fact that merging just duplicates the loot apparently? Kinda crazy. But then again 2 chests of fortune for the price of one when this world event grind to get chest of fortune has gotten insanely exhausting and we really need alternate routes of getting chest of fortune.

But yea a sloop only player it would have also been nice if the sails could function faster if you are solo since it still functions as clunky as a galleon. Only upside is because the BB is a world event no kraken can spawn so you wont even have to worry about krakens and should be unsinkable to megs. Didn't have a skeleton ship spawn on me so not sure if they can even spawn when the BB is active.

@hefty-henri and yea they always tend to over do the numbers on commendations.

  • PvE: Easier to take down than a skelly gally. I know other World Events' difficulty scale with crew size, but this was very easy to take down with my gally.

PvP (I am BB): The larger my crew, the easier. A solo BB might struggle against a sweaty gally crew, of course.

But my crew barely plays anymore, and I readily admit how washed I am. We had no trouble sinking sweaty newgens who would have murdered us if it was just gally v gally lol.

PvP (I am attacking BB): Difficulty again depends on the size of the crew. The larger and more experienced the BB crew is, the more challenging the fight.

It's the one I find most interesting tbh. Way more fun to fight the BB than it is to use all its buffs against regular ships.

  • I really enjoy it.
Skelly burning blade is very easy to defeat, probably need to increase the difficulty.

When sailing the burning blade as a gallon crew it is op (heck even as a well practiced brig it's op) but it kind of feels right because the BB moves much slower then every other ship and it taking multiple crews working together to try sink you really makes you feel like you are the event.

As for attacking the burning blade I'm unsure of at the moment every time I've faced it, it hasn't had a well practiced crew on there so its fairly easy to board kill all the skelly support and then just stop/distract them from repairing.

All in all from my experience I think they've hit the nail on the head pretty much, just wish it was a little more difficult to fight as an AI ship

Edit: probably my favourite world event they've released so far

  • I think the balance is just right!

  • If not exploit I thinks its all right in every aspect right now.

  • One thing I think they should do about this event is keep it real, this isn't a solo event and if they ever tinker to try to cater to solos they will make it worse overall.

It's their first big crew event and I think we should all be real about that. It's only good as a big crew event. There is not going to be a cake and eat it too situation on this event, can't have both on this event, it won't work.

I'm as solo as solo gets in this game so I'm very much not anti-solo in any way, I'm just pro-keeping it real. This needs to stay and be maintained as a big crew multi ship battle event. It will not work as intended by trying to work solos in as well.

The ridiculousness of the exploits aside this is a good big crew event. One of the more successful events the game has had. It's just not built for everyone and it's not going to work for everyone. Keep it real about that and it'll be alright.

  • Fact the seas are full of solo players sailing BB should be a gimmick and not a grindfest for commendations and cosmetics doin boring camps, feels cool as solo player going into a temple just to get sunk.... I just grinded the hg curses and now its again just pvp ,its not more an adventure, this game just feels sweaty and grindy, sometimes i ask me why i still play SOT.maybe they should seperate crewsizes on servers but they will not do cause i guess servers cant handle 6 galleons proper,
