More Non-Grindy Commendations Please

  • For the most part, commendations seem to lean towards a grind. I'm tired of repeating the same-same-old-old we've done 100 times before for a "new" commendation.
Personally, I like commendations that demand us to behave in different ways from the regular fetch or kill quests.
Example; Warsmith of Flame (set fire to skelly boat with Ashen skull)
    I really like these ones.

    I'd like some more added that challenge you to try things you may not have done before. Some Idea's;
    Surf the Meg.
Kill the Meg with a Keg
Catch Fish from a Skelly boat.
Sink each type of Skelly Ship without hitting it with cannon fire.
Stack 100 Kegs on your Boat at the same time.
Complete a mission on only a rowboat.
Get to Level 5 emissary with stools being the only "treasure" touched by the crew.
Complete a Fort without killing a single skelly with your weapons.
Vomit on 5 different pirates in a single session.
Complete the parkour course at Sea Dog's under a certain time.

Anyway - you get the idea - I'd like more things to do that are going to ask us to play in different ways from the norm.

  • I agree. I think repetition of an activity is just artificial replayability and it hurts the game as it causes fatigue to the players.

Allow me to explain myself, in my honest opinion the Heart of Fire Tall Tales managed to improve upon what the Shores of Gold Tall Tales did. Let's ignore the journals for a moment and look at the rest of the commendations. Most of the Shores of Gold Tall Tales are done by just completing the story, but then the last one demands to be repeated five more times. Then if we look at the Heart of Fire Tall Tale we can see that the first run is not enough as there are commendations for doing the other paths, and players feel encouraged to try those alternative paths out of curiosity rather than being told to repeat it, and the two extra runs are done there by doing the extra paths. The Shores of Gold may switch the islands every now and them, but also it doesn't change much as it is the same puzzles and same battles but just in a different island, without mentioning that it's a lot of sailing while Heart of Fire has the alternatives in the same island.
Then we have the Pirate's life and Monkey Island Tall Tales, that were even bigger improvements, as those are side objectives that are not essential to complete the tall tales, but can be done out of curiosity. If done correctly, all the commendations can be done in one go, so those looking to explore every single part of the tall tale may get a total completion during the first run if they find all the secrets.

My point is that for someone like me it feels better to repeat something becauase it is my choice, rather than the commendation telling me to do it. I find it more fun to be the one choosing to repeat.

Unfortunately many commendations are just repetitions. You defeated the Gold Hoarder? Great, now do it 4 more times You cleared the Fort of the Damned? Now do it 49 more times. You managed to get a champion streak in hourglass? You have to do it 49 more times. Got a coral message and decided to sail to the other side of the map and found the breath of the sea? Now do it 29 more times. A lot of these commendations are just repeating activities, and I personally decided to ignore most of them and dedicate my time to do activities I enjoy.

Do I enjoy selling kingly loot? I do, because I can find Kingly loot with different methods (Shipwrecks, Captain skulls, Bottles), so it feels like that is done passively rather than going out of my way just to do a grind.

  • I prefer the season pass design over all of it.

The comms, the ledgers, the grinds

Imo they treat the game like grinds or specific action comms are necessary but there are years worth of that stuff to do.

Many of the veteran players cheese all that stuff and then it's just pile on top of pile on top of pile of unnecessary grinds.

Do a bunch of season pass type of design imo. Reward the preferred activity rather than stuff that immediately ends up metas and cheesing.

The alliance servers are all putting in huge numbers regularly anyway, let the organic style players just chill going forward imo. We were supposed to have a "fun" design in season 12 and it was just as grindy and meta filled as the rest of the seasons.

I've been nothing but supportive of the emporium but if the emporium is gonna become more and more of a focus then the extreme grinds should become less and less of a thing imo.

    Huh?
The Season pass doesn't actually require you to do anything specific. Just existing on the server & sailing around gives you levels. Not exactly engaging or close to what I'm talking about here.

For people who have played the game as long as you & I, I'm running out of commendations that aren't just massive sinkholes of time, like collecting Horns. I'm not into extreme grinding. I'd like more fun & interesting things to aim for.
Just imagine if some of the commendations were guild specific, like the Sea Dog's Tavern course? Fastest time set within your guild etc.

  • @smuntface All good ideas but I REALLY like the one" Complete a mission on only your rowboat". I've done that before, and it was actually very satisfying.
