Dear rare
First of all, thank you for all the hard work you pour out into this game. And second of all, thank you for the constant development of the gameplay and story. You are keeping the game fun to play, and dangerously addictive 😂
I do have one plea though 🙏🏻
I would really love a non pvp way to grind Guardians of Fortune rep.
The thing is, I’m a fairly dedicated lore fan (I’ve bought, read and enjoyed all the books and comics😄). So just like becoming pirate legend was a special moment, so would receiving the blessing of Athena’s Fortune be.
The problem is. I’m really bad at pvp 😅
I’m currently at lvl 30-ish, and feel pretty burned out. I’ve been playing hourglass pvp, since the season released, and even though I’m practicing, my win/lose ratio is embarrassing 🤣 (and I’ve watched videos trying to improve my skills. PvP just isn’t my thing I guess).
If you could somehow become a Guardians of Fortune emissary, and do related quests, world events, etc. That would be a real game changer for me.
I hope you will consider my suggestion.
Kind regards
Mumrick

@mumrick6200 Easier to talk and help ? Rather than make short posts, I will be gone in a few hours, so I extended my hand to help.
@sa1tynutz That’s really nice of you, and very appreciated. I will be home in a couple of hours, and will log on discord if the offer still stands 😊👍
@mumrick6200 I will be on around 5-ish EST. Discord is @mtsaltmoregamez, of course I love helping people it will be still there.
I only got the blessing recently, and these are the main points i can give:
- Doing hourglass solo feels better (personally) because the fights normally end quicker and I only encountered 1 person who used the strategy of running away to get me to quit from boredom.
- It's a marathon, not a sprint: It took me about 6 months of pretty regular playing with a win/ loss ratio of about 1:3. Burnout is totally normal, try doing other activities for a while or play different games to recover.
- The matchmaking system is pretty bad, and I remember when I was only level 36 going up against someone with the golden skelly curse. It is horribly unbalanced so try to be mindful of that.
- make mental notes of what caused you to lose that fight: Was I too focused on bailing and not on attacking? Should I have tried to bring their mast down while they were occupied? Noticing these mistakes did help me alot when I was starting out.
Overall, I agree the curses should be obtainable through other means, because the truth is, the struggle is with hourglass, not the grind itself. Hopefully they plan to do a rework of it in the future. But do be mindful there are always players better than you, but if you try to stick with it, and focus on hourglass as a way to improve your PvP skills, rather than a means to an end, I think it makes it more enjoyable

MumrickIf you keep at it, you will get better, it’s impossible not to.
Consider that there is a lot of completion out there, playing versus humans in any game always has a difficult learning curve. Also consider that SoTs matchmaking system isn’t so perfect that it’ll consistently match you versus players of similar skill. In fact, you typically get who you get based on who is available in the queue. It’s not a competitive game so I’m okay with that, but that does mean you’ll be going up against all skill types, and the players playing the most frequently are typically better than most other players (at HG) for the simple reason that they get more practice, so naturally you’ll be fighting a lot of difficult fights.
I started playing SoT last March, and after about 2 or 3 months of doing only PvE (I loved Athena shipwrecks) I eventually decided to improve at PvP so that I didn’t feel like I needed to be so careful all the time (I took every precaution). I had the goal of getting 200 in each faction, this goal was based on the upgradable items available until 200. I pursued this goal with more motivation than most, I’d guess, but it was a massive struggle in the beginning. I’d lose constantly and feel discouraged about it, but I’ve played a lot of games with PvP and recognized that this was normal. Any new player to counter strike, for example, is going to be slaughtered for a while before they get their win/loss ratio to even.
I think a lot of people can improve their HG experience but changing their mentality towards it. It doesn’t have to be just for getting a curse. You gain SO MUCH by improving at PvP. I’m now about 400 in servants and 230 in guardians. After I got 200 in each I barely played HG much at all for months and just enjoyed the game with my new-found competency. For timeline purposes, I can say that I had 200 in each by new years 2024, but I never kept thorough track of how often I played each session and so on. I’m not a top player but if I fought one of those fantastic streamers I can put up a fight, and maybe even have a chance at winning. This means that I can log into a session and know that I have a reasonable chance of surviving and/or winning an encounter. Yea, I got the curses, that’s awesome, but the curses are not the best thing I got from HG. I get that there are players who genuinely don’t enjoy PvP, is it because they lose a lot? Probably for many it is, but there are plenty of people I’m sure that truly don’t care for it even if they’re good at it. That’s fine, but in the game of SoT, PvP is part of it, so it would behoove one to try to become somewhat competent at a very important aspect of the game.
It’s great that you’re watching PvP videos, those were a huge help to me in the beginning, and watching top streamers is still a benefit to me. I did the majority of my HG journey (still ongoing) solo, but in the last several months I’ve been playing with a crew, usually duo but brig often as well. Nonetheless, most of my total matches were still completed solo. A few of my humble recommendations to make the process easier for you are as follows:
-
Don’t oversupply/prepare. If you’re losing often, don’t spend a lot of time getting supplies. I still do this, usually when playing with someone who I haven’t played much with. I might start out getting all the crates and clearing the outpost island, but after a quick loss I might just grab a storage crate, cannon ball crate, and buy captain supplies while only clearing the barrels in the immediate area with the storage crate. If we get curb stomped again (and supplies weren’t a factor) then I might just buy captain supplies, a cannon ball crate, and a supply crate but not clear any barrels, and just keep the supply crate for potential victories and subsequent looting. If it keeps happening, eventually I might just jump straight on the ship and start the queue, which is actually quite liberating. Whatever your methodology is, adjust your supplying according to how you’re doing.

Losing is okay. You might already have this one in the bag, but it’s something I struggle with. When I play with others I don’t act a fool upon a loss, but if it’s just me solo I might have some choice words to share with my monitor. I’m much better with this in SoT now, but initially I took some losses hard, especially when feeling that I just wasn’t getting better. It’s a natural feeling, I think, but try to minimize how much losing causes brain aneurysms. One thing I found myself doing last year was telling myself that if I lost this match, I’d go do that thing I’ve been putting off, like going to the grocery store. That way I set some boundaries for myself and make an effort to step away at times rather than forcing myself.
-
Don’t shy away from playing solo. Based on your post it kinda sounds like you’re already playing solo, but if not, do it. Mostly because relying on other players isn’t always a guarantee, and rather than waiting for others to log on, just do a couple of matches. I’m at the point now where I really enjoy all ship types in HG.
-
Record your fights and review them. I record all of my fights in and out of HG. Honestly, I don’t watch 90% of them, but if there’s something memorable I’ll check them out. Also, this comes in handy when reporting cheaters. The cheating problem is sooooooooo much better now than when i started in season 9, but they still exist. I reported a guy (and he was banned) around the beginning of season 12. Videos are great for seeing that you’re doing well or not so well, they’re also just fun in general to watch and you’ll often see things you didn’t notice during the actual match. Admittedly, I rarely watch fights I lose in, I just don’t enjoy it, but if there’s something specific in a loss video I might want to see, I’ll have it available. I don’t go crazy with video editing or anything, I just use the free nvidia GeForce app, which I assume requires a nvidia gpu, but not sure on that. In 2024 there are countless free recording apps. Just delete your videos regularly and space shouldn’t be an issue.
TLDR; keep at it, you are not alone in your struggle and I’d imagine that the vast majority of us experienced the same process initially. Sorry for the novel, sometimes writing forum post is better than the work sitting in front of me!
