Grapple gun season 14

  • I made my account just to post on here about the grapple gun.

I really don't think it's a good idea. Multi player crews already have an advantage, and now with the ability to board a ship even easier, it will not be fun particularly in single player mode.

Ship combat is great at the moment, but I feel ship combat will move to ship boarding, as it's the easiest way to take a ship.

Ship combat is one of the greatest things in this game, and I worry the grapple gun will just ruin it.

  • I have some similar concerns too, just going off the video though with it using the EoR skin and having an ammo count, I'd wager it'll take up a weapon slot which means this player will only be boarding you with one effective weapon. That will make them easier to kill in theory.

"In theory" is the correct world as nothing stops someone from grappling on to the ship and quickly accessing the armory.

It depends on how fast the grapple will be. If it's as fast as it was in the preview, it will be very easy to quickly get on a ship, grapple towards the general direction the armory is and exchange the grapple for an another weapon.

  • Just remember that if someone uses the grapple gun to get on board, they’re using a valuable weapon slot that limits them only to the other they have equipped, putting you at the advantage with both weapons of your choice. You also have many tools now to help with boarders, including the bonecaller and horn of fair winds, don’t be afraid to use them.

  • @tesiccl

The horn of fair winds is a tool we can use?

I always treat them like a box of wondrous secrets and sell them immediately because they are so rare and I need to sell 250 of them.

  • If this was 2-3+ years ago I'd be concerned for solos/the game.

Game doesn't lean against solos nearly as much in the last couple of years as people say it does as far as organic adventuring goes. It's shifted far more casual overall and the random adventure servers reflect that. A lot.

My guess is that the first month I'll see some in combat and then after the first patch I'll probably rarely see them. Just tends to be how things go.

I wouldn't worry this far out.

If they actually remove plaid speed from the brig this game will be in a good spot for sloops/solo and a grapple gun will fit in fine. Time will tell.

  • The grapple gun has the potential to be a ton of fun to use so I say let’s do it.

I’ve always said solo players belong on adventure servers with other solo players if they choose to play as a solo sloop rather than a duo sloop.

Solo PvP will be at its absolute best and most fun when everyone on the server is also solo.

So please don’t be scared to add tools to the game because of the impact it may have on full crews vs solo players.

Just do what you should have done all along. Let players choose solo sloop or duo sloop. If they choose solo sloop they cannot use open crew or invite a friend and they land on a server with just other solo players. If they choose duo sloop as a solo they can use open crew or invite a friend at anytime but they will land on servers with full crews.

Extremely simple way to ensure solo PvP is more than viable than it is now regardless of what new tools get added to the game.

We need fun new tools. We need new world events. We need new stuff to fight over and new reasons to interact with other crews.

Don’t make a solo battle a full crew if they don’t explicitly choose duo sloop for that purpose.

Balance the game Rare the entire game not just the PvE for solo players.

  • Keep in mind, you are basing your opinions off of very limited information… it is 2 seasons away.

1: They have mentioned things along the lines of Mantling being added (Grabbing the edge of something and pulling yourself up) to the game, like being able to hang off the side of a ship.

2: In the same announcement they did say they were adding deployable traps to the game

3: From what we can gather, the Harpoon Gun will take up a weapon slot, and it doesn’t do any damage. So any boarder using this will be handicapped to 1 weapon till they get to the Weapons Chest. Who knows, they could add some mechanic that would make accessing another ships Ammo Chest or Armory harder for other players (Like have it take a couple seconds to access like stealing the maps off the Quest Table, have a similar function to opening another crews Armory) which would make this even more of a challenge for the boarder.

4: Based off of other things in the game, the Grapple Gun will have a unique sounding shot, and will undoubtedly have a unique sound for the impact of the harpoon, and the reeling in as well… so any boarders using it will be well telegraphed.

If you didn’t know, Sea of Thieves also has an insider program, which they ask the community to test new weapons/items/events/features for future releases. You can sign up for it on the Community Tab under “Get Involved” and when they eventually do test upcoming features they do ask for players feedback on them. You just aren’t supposed to talk about the stuff they are testing on the public forums.

While it is common in the video game community, reacting to only partial info doesn’t do anyone any good, so don’t jump to conclusions that the Harpoon Gun will be a death-knell to the game till we have all the other things that are going to interact with it.

  • I think the easy fix is preventing boarders from using the other ship's weapon locker.

In which time if the crew you boarded is aware of you doing so, they will be swinging at you before you have swapped out that weapon for what ever you are looking for.

Rare could just lock out the armory and ammo crates for non-crew

  • Rare has said many times, "Things could change and not happen"

  • Bro. There is no "single player mode" this isn't an adventure game!!!! This game is based around getting treasure with the possibility of someone stealing it. Why do people like you think this is a fishing/ collecting loot simulator. It's not. You can spend hours getting stuff and it can all get jacked. That's the bread and butter of this game. That IS this game. Either practice pvp or accept thay this game isn't for you
