Without enabling "Reduce hold to use item", it's impossible to hold the speaking trumpet to my mouth and use text chat at the same time... but I'm not sure if that actually does anything. I've heard other people say that merely holding the trumpet amplifies text chat. What I do know is that putting the trumpet to my mouth when using Pirate Chat doesn't appear to do anything, but the Pirate Chat Radial Menu gives a specific option to use the speaking trumpet regardless of how it's held.
Is the wiki wrong hear? Does holding it up to your mouth while doing text chat do nothing?
