The Infinite Pirate Generator [Issues and Solutions]

  • The IPG is the first thing everyone is sent to as soon as they start sea of thieves for the first time and is where you are asked to select the pirate you want to be, the issue however is that it can be quite difficult to find a pirate that you like through and through.

Some players do not care what their pirate looks like and that is completely fine, but the players that do want a decent looking pirate are forced to rely on sheer luck to get one. Some may go in and spent 10 minutes to find their perfect pirate and others wont find theirs even after spinning and generating for several hours.
From what I understand the original intention of this randomly generating system was to allow players to have fully unique pirates rather than ending up in situations where players use a template and end up looking the same, something I actually like the idea of but know could be heavily improved.
I'm going to go over a few ways it could possibly be improved, both by adding only slight changes and keep more randomness and another that will limit the randomness more.

Firstly, I will go over a few issues I noticed myself.

    • Inability to see all areas of the pirate you are hovering over.
In many cases there are several attributes that are randomly generated that usually aren't fully seen until the pirate is already selected and you are in game, such as missing teeth.
    • Reliance on fully randomly generating attributes
Relying on the entirely random system often creates situations where you are trying to generate a male or female pirate only to end up with the opposite, or generate pirates that look closer to yourself in skin tone but end up generating tons of ones that do not fit.
    • Generated clothing hiding true size or shape of the pirate
This is a more recently noticed issue as I was introducing someone to the game, they picked a pirate they enjoyed but upon removing the jacket once they got into the game became annoyed because the pirate was much more bulky than they wanted. The jacket had made the pirate appear smaller than they were.

[Simple Fixes - Fixes that do not majorly change the purpose of the IPG]

    • Provide the ability to change the pose the selected pirate is in.
This would allow the player to switch through various poses that are also used on other pirates within the generator, the usefulness of this would primarily affect the teeth of generated pirates. Once a pirate is generated they are given a randomly selected pose which often keeps their mouth closed and makes it impossible to see all of the attributes before selecting.
I myself went through this issue when I first played the game when I selected a character I thought looked great, only to notice once in game that they had missing teeth, which has been a common annoyance as far as I have seen.
    • Utilizing the favorite system in order to help players generate pirates with certain attributes they are desiring
This idea would give an entirely new purpose to the favorites system in which rather than just saving pirates you think look nice as you continue searching, would instead give you the option to generate pirates based off of those favorites whilst still having the randomization with it.
As an example, lets say you find a pirate with green but barely noticeable eyes and another with more open and noticeable eyes but they are brown, If you favorited both of those pirates and selected the ability to generate more pirates based of your favorites, you would have a chance to generate one with the wider more noticeable eyes but now in the green colour you preferred.
    • Provide the ability to change the generated clothing on select pirates within the menu.
A simple idea to allow players to regenerate only the clothes on whatever pirate you are selecting in order to get a better look at the pirate itself, be it scars, true body size, so on.

[Complex Fixes - Fixes that change various parts of the IGP and limit the randomization of the process]

    • Provide the ability to inspect the pirate in closer detail and change attributes manually.
This would allow the player to inspect the selected pirate much more closely and allow them to change the eye colour, eye blindness, teeth, and scar pattern that first randomly generated with the pirate.
    • Allow players to swap model parts from one favorite to another.
This process would allow players to swap attributes and parts from pirates they have favorited with other generated pirates within reason: Eye shapes, body types, head types, noses, ears, etc. In a sense this would still be somewhat randomized but give more freedom in switching around parts.
    • Provide the ability to change the generated clothing on select pirates within the menu.
This would function the exact same as the fix mentioned above, there are only so many ways you could change the clothes.

Out of both fixes I described above personally I love the Simple version more as it keeps the randomized generation but allows the player to have some control over what could be generated and uses your favorites to do so. I understand the IPG is not as big of an issue as hit registration, hackers, and loot bugs but its one of the few issues I feel could be solved relatively easily and pushed out in a QoL update.

    Thank you for reading.

  • As a character and personal-story player, I would love this. The randomness is nice, but the ability to change/preserve those small details that nag us would be very welcome. I don't know how much I spent in each character generation, but I'm sure it was more than half an hour. I restarted my character three times already, loosing every achievement and money that I gained before, just to get a character that I feel confortable with.

I think it's a little on purpose. There will be always something that makes you want to change your character. So spend some money on appearance potions.

  • Some may go in and spent 10 minutes to find their perfect pirate and others wont find theirs even after spinning and generating for several hours.

That is the player issue. "The perfect Pirate" no such thing and your wasting playtime by doing this, for an Avatar you wont even see but 2% of the time.

In many cases there are several attributes that are randomly generated that usually aren't fully seen until the pirate is already selected and you are in game, such as missing teeth.

How often does a Pirate Smile? Or you or any other person even takes time to notice, some wear masks.

Utilizing the favorite system in order to help players generate pirates with certain attributes they are desiring

So far, the only reasonable and best choice. The fav system would lock in what you liked and go with that.

But again, your not meant to spend hours in this system, your wasting your own time by looking for something that nobody is gonna take a second to even consider. When was the last time someone said "Omg I love how your pirate looks, so stylish and perfect"

The pirate creator is like Loot, Some players dont take everything and will try, but its best to just Grab what you can and be happy with the results.

  • The point of the generator is to not be able to find the "perfect" pirate. They are all meant to have flaws and imperfections and feel lived in.

  • @BurnBacon Once again I feel you've misunderstood the core issue and complaint I'm attempting to make, I am fully aware it is up to the player to decide what qualifies as their perfect pirate but I entirely disagree with saying they do not exist, I found mine and have no desire to change at all, I have my perfect pirate appearance and so do many others.
I am trying to simply find ways to make it easier for others to find theirs, I know such details matter to other players about their own pirate especially in a game that is solely focused on cosmetic progression, you see your pirate all the time when selecting outfits.

    • Several emotes and actions cause your pirate to smile, many enjoy taking screenshots of themselves using such emotes after they have purchased them. Many also want their pirate to look the way they like when doing so, that can including not missing teeth. It is a personal preference but one that can annoy players who pay attention to such details.

    • Yes you aren't meant to spend hours selecting one but you cannot act like no one does or feels like they need to in order to get even a halfway decent looking Pirate. One of the many selling points of the game is the encouragement to be the pirate you want to be, this includes their appearance.
Comparing the IPG to in game loot is extremely ignorant, the only way you can change your appearance later is by purchasing an appearance potion with real money or outright deleting your pirate. Lost in game loot is actually infinite and can be attained over and over as much as you desire with the only cost being time, time that is already being spent playing the game anyway.

I cannot help but notice that in the two interactions we've had together, In this post and a previous one, you've misunderstood the entire point and have waved away the primary issue with the tone of 'sit down and deal with it' as if that answer is helpful or constructive for anyone.
I make it very clear that I am aware these issues are not big to some people, even stating that I understand and think it is fine to not worry what your pirate looks like and only bring up issues that affect players that do, yet you brush it off so uncaringly.
I do not demand others to care, If you disagree that is fine, but to basically look at another player tell them you don't care and they should just deal with it, and present it as a solution, is just terrible in this specific situation.

To reiterate, the issues I see with the IPG can be simplified down to 3 things: The inability to properly see the pirate you are selecting, the issues with relying on a fully randomized system with no way to suggest specific attributes or preferences, even simple ones such as male or female, and the issue with clothes hiding proper proportions of pirates which can cause someone to select one that is too thin or too bulky with no way to swap clothes and check before selecting.

All of these issues are things that do not affect the game itself but instead the players personal experience, it will never affect everyone the same nor should it be expected to. It's fine to not care how your pirate looks but in the same light you shouldn't disregard or wave away the issues of players that do.
Again, this game is entirely cosmetic focused, the whole point is to earn items for your pirate to wear so it should be no surprise that some want a good looking pirate.

  • @kezmur That is completely fine, as I stated several times I actually enjoy the randomness of the IPG and only dislike that you cannot do anything to narrow down the search for the pirate the player may want, not even being able to select male or female for the IPG to generate.
The perfect pirate does exist however it is all up to the players personal preferences, My pirate is one I used an appearance potion to get because I disliked the original look, now I have no desire to change because to me I now have my perfect pirate, but ill be the first to admit it took a long time of spinning and generating which is the other issue I find with the IPG.

I do not think you should be allowed to fully build the pirate from the ground up and instead still rely on the randomness the system generates, however I think players should be allowed to influence the generation of the pirates using the favorites system.

To use my previous example to detail what I mean: If you find a pirate with bright green eyes but the shape is tiny and unnoticeable, then another with hazel eyes but they are large and noticeable, you would be able to favorite them both and 'generate pirates from favorites' and have a chance to get one with the same large and noticeable eye shape but in the bright green colour the player desired. It would still contain randomized elements but be closer to what the player wants as their pirate.

  • @swimsshallows Players like you as well as myself are who I mean when I mention that to some players, their pirates appearance does matter to them, even if the pirates general appearance has no actual gameplay impact, only a personal one with the player.

I cannot be sure whether or not the issues are done on purpose nor will treat it like they do, my primary goal for the post in general is to give other players that do care about their pirates appearance the ability to more easily find one in a way that does not involve buying several potions, deleting their characters, or spend hours upon hours in the pirate generator just hoping you find one that you like.
Instead offer solutions to change the system in a way that still respect the randomness originally intended but also allow the ability to influence the IPG to generate something closer to what the player wants.

Again I mention the fact that this game is focused on horizontal progression and is quite literally solely based off cosmetic items like clothes, I never understand why others are so surprised that some care what their pirate looks like.

  • @burnbacon different folks different strokes. i would like my character to represent me. in most adventure games where you are the main protagonist you have the ability to edit all aspects of your character. same should apply with sea of thieves. infinite pirate generator is lazy and doesn't always give unique results. i know cos I'm one of those players who takes ages to find a character. half the time you cant even see the pirate your looking at because the lighting is awful and they pull stupid faces at you. what you see in the generator isn't exactly what you get in game. for those that are happy to spam a pirate and get into the game that's fine for them. some of us want to represent. and that should be fine as well.

  • @void-bunnny 100%

  • @qu1etone Exactly. 100%

  • I do not think you should be allowed to swap body parts, I like the RNG but I do agree on the part where you should be able to change pose since currently (as you said); you miss out on some features a model might or might not have because they are doing a specific pose.

I have a suggestion that would IMO fix all of these issues, make it so you can run around in the tavern AS the pirate you thinking about selecting. At that point you can sit in a chair, do the wave emotes and the other default ones and see if something is missing from said pirate.

  • @itz-majman I do agree with you on that part, that's why I only mentioned it in the 'Complex Fixes' section. I would much prefer the ability to use the favorites system to help generate pirates based off of what you have rather than outright selecting one so it keeps the original randomized aspect of it whilst still allowing players to get one they like much more easily than just generating and hoping for hours on end.
Plus adding in that system would be much more simple as it is just taking both aspects of the original system, The ability to favourite pirates you like and the generation ability in general, and allowing you to use them together to create other pirates that match your preference.
I think being able to run around the tavern would be a great idea but would end up being an overhaul kind of change, the ability to change poses/clothes and maybe even zoom in on the pirate like the camera does after selection and even rotating them would be very useful in itself and fulfil the same need, all of which are mostly already used now and just need to be available for use from the player.
