Little actual "piracy" in SOT

  • Is it me or is there very little proper "piracy" in this pirate game? Aside from stealing/sinking from other pirate ships, you do not, from what I can tell, engage in plundering of merchant/treasure/supply ships or raiding/besieging of actual forts and outposts. Instead, we fight undead beings and attack other pirates.

I think it would be nice to pirate royal convoys and flotillas or attack a town to have them surrender some treasure. It would also be nice to engage in more legitimate shipping (open to being pirated) and for the sovereign to offer privateering commissions.

(I am a returning player who only played at launch so lmk if I'm missing something.)

  • @grandpiff You could always think of skeleton ships as raiding Flameheart's supply vessels. And we do have actual forts that you can raid.

Having them be merchant or royal ships is just changing set dressing, and doesn't really fit with the narrative where the 'Sea of Thieves' is supposed to be an isolated pocket universe where the larger navies can't get into.

  • It doesn't fit into the plot, this kind of thing happens outside of Sea of Thieves only, characters like Flameheart, Pirate Lord and others attacked merchant and official ships outside of SoT.

The closest thing we have to this type of piracy are the reapers, within the plot they criticize pirates having relationships with commercial companies instead of robbing them, and seek to change that. looting and attacking.

  • Create those piracy moments. It’s your story after all. Role play it.

  • I feel like we missed the chance to get this kind of content once flameheart entered the picture, everything has entered a Pirate vs Skeleton battle and little shifts it's direction (Phantoms and Ocean Crawlers as an example)

What would be nice: Sovereign Treasure ships to plunder.

What we likely are only to get: Find a Merchant optimizing Commodities and Missing Cargo Ships.

  • @d3adst1ck merchant convoys would be a redressing? Skeleton ships popping up to attack or aimlessly circling the ocean is a bit different. A convoy or flotilla would follow a route and the treasure would be escorted by ships of the line or whatever, it doesn't have to be the same thing. And where can you attack outposts?

  • @lleorb the plot is as thin and elusive but alright

  • @grandpiff If you want a ship that sails around that you can attack, Season 13 is adding Flameheart's ship which will do exactly that and then you can take it over and use it yourself if you want.

I didn't say outposts. I said you can attack forts. There are several across the map.

  • @vaughnsilver soverign ships are exactly what I mean! Treasure ships and flotillas were either servants of a "crown" or commissioned by one! I agree with you. I also think that its silly to limit to preclude other types or content once they add content of a different type.

  • I dunno, ships that run emissaries are essential company ships. Other players that are running merchants, gold hoarders, order of souls are the sails for hire while reapers are the true pirates, although those company ships might not be honest and trust worthy sailors and more then willing to do a little pirating themselves
