Wishlist Item: Server Player Count Increase (Aye! or No)

  • Now that the age of late consoles is fading into the past and server capability is only getting better, what does everyone think about the potential for Rare to return to a 6 boat server? Perhaps even increasing beyond that?

We understand the strain this had initially presented to servers, in turn causing significant lags. Is this behind us? Does Rare now have the resources from Microsoft to add more boats/players to servers? Is it now technically possible to increase server performance?

If so, do you also wish for/support this?

It is often that my crew and I will sail around the server for long periods of time without seeing any other boats. This makes it feel as if we incorrectly selected a Safer Seas experience. Player interactions are one of THE BEST parts of SoT (as noted by many).

We understand that this may be simply a technical or resource constraint, but if people are in agreement, let's give Rare the support they need by requesting this to the top portion of the priority list.

    Safe sailing!

  • @el-c4pitano Aye with raised tankard! 🍺

  • @el-c4pitano Just for clarification, the platform you use to play Sea of Thieves has 0 impact on Servers.

Servers do not care if you are playing on a £30,000 PC or a Smart Fridge.

  • 5 or 6 has never really mattered as much as some think it does.

It's all ecosystem of a server and 6 doesn't inherently make it better just because of more people, in risk/reward it could make activity worse depending on the state of the environment.

When 5 starts to really feel "dead" for server after server that's entirely an ecosystem issue, not a 5 boat issue.

Every season can be different, Season 7 was a pretty terrible season for organic play because of high bugs, over hunting, and the necessary QoL still wasn't in in the game yet.

Season 11 also has a lot of bug issues but this season is over cheesing and over exploiting. People had a lot of options to cash in for mass rewards with little risk and many veteran players chose to do that. Bonus on top of bonus and cheesing all over means participation is often far outside of organic play with risk.

5 has never and will never be the issue in SoT. It's health of the organic environment. Too much over-hunting and/or too much cheesing are the major problems in risk/reward.

6 will never be the solution, irrelevant bandaid that people look to as the answer to problems in the game. 6 can feel very crowded in SoT on some servers and crowding just adds to disinterest in risk.

In a game that struggles with performance as much as SoT it makes far more sense to maintain a solid 5 over a mess of a 6.

  • @look-behind-you, haha thanks for clarifying. How about resources to enhance server performance? Is it feasible?

  • @wolfmanbush, thanks! When you say organic environment and ecosystem issues, do you mean that these are causing less boats to spawn? Apologies if I am misunderstanding. The idea I am presenting is to create greater chances for player engagement and interactions. How would this best work?

Every server is a roll of the dice

In healthy risk/reward it'll be higher chances for interest in risk activity. World events, commendation grinding, gold farming with risk, etc

When it's over-hunted or when people over cheese then those odds go way down, making more servers seem "dead" because that organic interest and participation aren't there.

This is why it's important to not lean too much into enabling over-hunting and not enabling over cheesing.

Seasons 8-9 are an example of how to address over-hunting, solid seasons. Remove the pvp pressure, add the QoL.

We are yet to see how or if they will address the extreme cheesing. So far it's been worse and worse.

To address all the pve cheesing they would have to draw some lines and stick to them. Mainly rolling back extreme cheesing/exploiting when it wasn't intended. Faster fixes, etc. It will 100% not improve naturally, it will require changes in maintenance.

We are also at a very concerning spot in exploiting/cheesing where regulars in the community are just flat out justifying pve cheating. Not a promising situation to be in.

  • @el-c4pitano Waaaaay beyond my Volunteer level pay grade! 😂

I can say that 6 ships on a server has always been the goal/design aim.

More than that is not ideal because Sea of Thieves was never designed to be a 'boating lake' with constant forced interactions due to proximity and less than 6 is obviously less than ideal.

The Team are aware and are constantly monitoring and balancing between ship/crew numbers and server stability.

The overall aim is to return to 6 ships as soon as possible whilst still maintaining overall server stability.

  • @look-behind-you, thanks! Thanks to all.. just curious if solutions to increase player interactions exist.. even hypothetically. Will keep it on the wishlist!

At the very least, I am sure it will get better with servers "fully filling" correctly before allowing players to drop into dead servers.

  • @wolfmanbush, ah OK I see what you're saying now. Mostly in respect to loot and QoL. My hope here is to increase player/boat count someday.. resulting in more in-person interactions (whether those be PvE or PvP based).

  • @el-c4pitano I believe the original intention was to see/interact with another crew around every 20 mins or so.

More than 6 crews would disrupt that (the number of outposts is not a happy accident! (not including Morrow's)).

If there were more than 6 crews, you could essentially have an (even fresh spawn) extra crew at every outpost at the same time which would limit choices for turning loot in.

They've long been committed to 6 so you have that working for ya

Whether or not it'll ever become something more than temporary remains to be seen.

Something like season 13 would be a good time to really go for 6 with that flameheart ship roaming around. That's gonna take a lot of participation to remain interesting as content.

It would also be a good season to ease back to 6 because so much of the focus would be on the opt in pvp.

  • Also, if you want to meet/chat to new people....meeting them on the Ferry is always an option....

Make a plan....find out what they are up to....form an alliance....break the alliance... 🤷‍♂️ up to you!

I have met folks on the Ferry and managed to get the few extra people we needed to do Glitterbeard before!

  • @look-behind-you, good point.. didn't even think of that. Maybe a new spawn point in the Devil's Thirst? right under a volcano? Kidding.

  • @el-c4pitano 😬

  • @wolfmanbush, great points - agreed.

  • @look-behind-you haha I did the same! Maybe we as a crew have been down because the past several sessions, we have not seen a soul. Just got us thinking how could we/Rare improve this?

This includes HG spawns on those servers?

SoT coming to Smart Fridges confirmed.

  • @metal-ravage Again, waaaaaaay above my Volunteer paygrade knowledge! trust me, no one, anywhere, wants me anywhere NEAR actual control of game code or understanding! 😂

  • @tesiccl Darnit! I tried to hold onto that leak for so long...

  • I'm sure if they could increase player counts they would have returned us back to 6 ships with 24 players already.

  • @look-behind-you look behind ye, it’s Joe Neate with the ban hammer! 😰
