Game Expansion Concepts

  • Just a couple concept ideas

Love the game, freedom to play and do what you want to do making your own experience. I’ve also enjoyed the concepts for the future of the game as well as the progress it has made so far with its further expansion on what can be done within the game.

I have a couple concepts for future immersion without duplicating existing experiences I’d like to bring up here:

    The Uncharted Mists

    Zone:
Here lay a very untouched, perilous and mysterious region shrouded in fog making visibility more difficult where natives in colourful, near nude, body/face painted and/or deathly aesthetic can jump out at any moment.

    Faction:
Here you will meet however a friendly Aztec/Myan Tribe on the larger isle within the zone, their South America themed great stepped pyramid just peaking above the fog of which surrounds it. You will be able to grind reputation with for exclusive cosmetics for everything from weapons, clothing, ships pets such as panthers or giant anacondas. You could look like an Aztec/Myan, you could unlock skull lanterns, hanging skeletons to just name a few. You will also be able to unlock a new ship theme for the brigantine, the tribe will tell you this came from a distant land speculation says the other side of the world - a southeast Asian styles pinisi sailed ship an equivalent to the brigantine with side on sails.

    The Frozen Wastes

    Zone:
Here you’ll find an inhospitable place, icebergs like giant rocks that move with the tide, you’ll need to keep an eye out and navigate your ship out of the way of these moving icebergs to avoid impact.

    Faction:
Despite these risks similarly to the above, you will also meet some friendly company here. These people are a Viking colony, through a reputation grind you will unlock the equivalent themed cosmetics for weapons, clothing, ship and pets such as polar bears, seal or walruses. Eventually you will also unlock a new ship theme equivalent to a sloop, an old classic Viking longboat, especially perfect for those who’d like to put a new flashy figurehead on show.

The "ice zone" is a very common suggestion. To me, it feels too "video game mandatory."

If we ARE going to create new regions for the game, there are things to consider:

    1. The devs have stated that increasing the size of the map is something they are hesitant to do. This has to do with more map area spreads the players out and lowers the ship-to-ship encounter rate.
---Take this first point with a grain of salt, as they also said they'd never do a PVE servers, and now we have Safer Seas.

    2. If we do want to add new zones, let's actually be creative. The game has a rich lore, let's use that lore to create new and unique styles of zones. For that I would suggest things like:

    • Haunted Shores: this region are areas of the Sea of the Damned that have "bled" into the Sea of Thieves. Like Sea Forts which were brought forth, the haunted shores are less substantial. So, the islands are somewhat a version of islands that have something akin to the ghost ship theme layered onto them.

    • Preserved Isles: These islands, recently discovered are a sea-bound ancient city. Here the temples are not ruined, but are in pristine condition.

    • Hunter's Flotilla: The hunter's call has become a full fleged faction and have taken over the southern section of the SoT. There are no 'islands' here, but instead, clusters of ships, docks, and platforms. Their locations aren't set, but roam the southern sea similar to the storm.

  • I have heard of the limitations, the size doesn’t have to be increased but more condensed, less useless spaces. Many current limitations are not always permanent.

I understand an ice zone as predictable, I see this as fitting parallel to the Devils Roar currently in the game and ultimately a very different landscape compared to existing areas. Who wouldn’t want to avoid moving icebergs meet vikings, look like them, sail your own a Nordic longboat sloop or southeast Asian pinisi brigantine from the Aztec/myan tribe in the foggy zone of uncharted mists ?

I feel adding in variants for the existing ships will add so much more variety and creativity for players customisation, individuality. The niche relevance to polar bear, walrus, giant anaconda or panther pets possibilities recurring.

Going more Caribbean, a mystical Aztec/myan stepped pyramid just peaking above the fog, surely a stereotypical conquistadors conquest for any pirate game? The darkness of hanging corpses, uses of skull lanterns, body paints etc is aesthetically fitting?

  • fix and patch before thinking about adding things. They can't patch half of the elements mentioned in their patches and you would like to add something new to the game...

  • I like the uncharted mists Idea a lot and the moving frozen ice bergs but not completely sold on the viking theme, it's from a different time period in history and in my opinion doesn't fit the pirate theme of the game. But that is just my opinion 😂

  • The narrative can be linked to fit as stories will always be added, I understand that vikings are from a different time period however this is a Viking colony lost/isolated in time - reality of most games made to be fun/exciting is they are never totally factual

  • Sorry to sound like I sound but I kinda like how well patched together map is now. We have that nice feeling on being on archipelago with is fine.
Throwin a bunch of biomes into it would ruin that feeling for me.

  • @ghutar I totally get this, what change something that’s not broken? However I don’t think it will change much of what is already there but add to it. Surely this same argument could have been made before anything new was added to the game at all? It’s just too pessimistic I feel there’s just more doors worth opening

  • @jamojokester I don't see it in eny way pessimistic.
I like to see how map changed from first days to today, but like everybody
I have my own preferneces and there is no place for Icezone with vinkings in them :)

As I see development time as fintinte resource I would rather get something that would shake the seas somehow.
New voyages, new mechanic, new ship, new weapon or cannonballs - something that will change the rutine.

Don't get me wrong I love how much hearth you put into this concepts but I don't see how they change enything. Adding biomes for sake of adding something don't change much.

We can allways agree to disagree there.

  • @jamojokester

The mists is fine, probably close to my preserved isles idea. Personally, instead of adding Aztecs, I would just go ahead and tie it to 'the ancients.' You could add aztecs, but we already have an expy for them, so it would reinforce the game's lore to keep it there.

I stick by what I said earlier though WRT the frozen wastes. It's....uninspired. Your point about it being a counterpoint to the Roar is EXACTLY the type of thing I'm talking about. "We have a lava level, so naturally we need an ice level." It's not that the idea is bad OR that interesting things couldn't come from the idea. It's just that if we are going to add a new zone, let's get an area that hasn't been done to death a thousand times over.

  • @tybald maybe you could add in just the one off isle within the ancients as a previously lost isle shrouded in mist that gets discovered with what I’ve said previously on there for example.

I get what you are saying with the ice area but what landscapes on earth are more different? It’s one of the most unique possibilities in reality. The ghostly/haunted idea could verge into a bit too much fantasy, what I like about the Viking idea though a bit extreme is still grounded in more realism for me.

I do enjoy the game as is, I don’t think it needs massive new mechanics or ways of playing just missing that discovery aspect more now.

  • @jamojokester

WRT to "fantasy"...we fight walking skeletons, we visit the sea of the damned, talk with and fight ghosts (and mermaids) etc. I'm not sure I follow your logic there.

However, I think something that could be done WRT new 'things' and 'discovery' might be a new scenario for the SOT.

    "Chaos"
Someone/something has blown the Winds of Chaos into the SOT, and the stability of the sea is unraveling. Reality becomes "patchy" as areas within the SOT shift states. Islands that were in ruins have the ruins become pristine, some end up with a ghostly palor, others mysteriously covered in snow....of all things. Blah blah blah....

The sea of thieves is already divided into regions, but this would create smaller micro-regions within the SOT, say 2-3 islands in size. Instead of adding new areas, the micro-regions instead switch between game-states. Probably at first, these state shifts would happen on a set schedule (say every 2 weeks in micro-patches). You would then be able to go out and discover the state of various islands.

In addition, as you are simply 'tweaking' existing areas on the map instead of adding new regions, you can add more themes and states over time without worrying about expanding the map.

  • The game could better itself with at the least a change to the seas, we've been exploring the same islands for as long as the games been out. Even though we have gotten a map expansion it isn't really active or fun to voyage on. cough* cough* Devils Roar. I really like @Tybald 's idea of "Haunted Shores" I think that would be fun. I hope they look into adding something new to explore

  • Another “add ice zone” request hidden behind by adding another zone. :p

I’ll never understand the want of an ice place. Nobody ever said about exploring the SotD which seems more richer and welcoming

  • @burnbacon
Oh. It "makes sense" to me. It's "video game mandatory" at the point. Once you put "fire area" in it's natural for people to want the opposite alternative. This leads many people to thinking of a 'interesting idea' that alot of other people had as well. I don't remember who or when, but a long time ago, some company held a contest about photographing superheroes in everyday situations. They got some good ones. But the most frequent picture they got? Lots of people came to the same 'unique and funny' idea "Superhero sitting on toilet taking a dump"

  • @tybald I like what you said about micro regions and changing of states, means you don’t have to add but evolve what already exists. This makes sense long term to avoid bloating the game imo and has just as many endless possibilities
