The hourglass grind and why I find it problematic

  • I suppose this post doesn't sound super unique. PvE player complains about hourglass and the hourglass curses. But I just want to say, this isn't about the curses being hard to get. I think it is completely fair for the curses to require high levels in both the PvP factions and trading companies. It makes sense that the greatest cosmetics are hard to get.

So then, what is my problem with the hourglass mode?

The lack of rewards before level 100. There is barely anything to get before you hit that triple digit number. Maybe a couple figureheads of the Pirate Lord or Servant of the Flame. Or some sails. But thats about it. Why? This just deters casual players from wanting to engage in the mode. I have never felt motivated to engage in the mode, because the only thing to think about is that curse that feels light-years away. There is nothing else to look forward to in the mode.

My suggestion is simply adding some more rewards to soften the grind a bit. Some cool weapons, some more ship cosmetics... More stuff to look forward to in general.

  • If you don’t focus on the rewards. You’re gonna have a better time.

The tool is only for pvp on demand, the rewards are just there for goal making. If the curses are not your thing and you just wanna pvp regardless whom you fight, (as it should) your gonna have a better time.

  • @gameglarb yep would love get some more cosmetisc like ship sets and clothing on way to 100.

  • It's all relative, the gap between 200 and 1000 is a lot bigger and the fact that there are titles, figureheads etc up to 100 I don't think that should be priority.

  • Ill be honest I've mainly hg'd for the achievements tied to it and finally reached 100 on guardians last week. I get what you mean but the rewards are very different to the main game and like the arena rewards are too highlight those who have put time in.

I would say learn to enjoy the grind though. I named my ship dice roll but if people didn't dice roll I'd wade into the PvP and just not repair. Being an Xbox player on pc servers I knew I was unlikely to win but I did improve and started to win perhaps 25% of my battles.

However it was the community in the hg I enjoyed. You'd start to see the same players every night and you shared your journeys. And I found if I was polite and friendly, often they were back. I don't think I came across any toxicity at all.

Hg isn't for everyone, just like some companies aren't either but if you do want to unlock everything just try to enjoy the journey if you can.

  • I agree, i think lvl 30,50,70,90 rewards consisting of for example a weapon set would solve much.

I would also have a daily, a weekly and a seasonal deed. Not to focus on more allegiance efficiency but just what it does to your mind. Knowing that a fight a day, a few a week and some during seasons makes a small difference cause the ball to start rolling.

Any form of checkpoint feeling or more presidence over your session would make the mode more enticing and player friendly.

  • @tenlo I wish I could also learn to enjoy the grind… But its hard to when 90% of my matches go like this: Rise up from the waves. Sail across from enemy boat. Miss all my cannon shots. Get chainshotted. Get blasted with cannonballs. Get boarded and killed. Ship sinks while i’m inside the Ferry. Think about what a miserable experience that was. Rinse and repeat.

  • @gameglarb id recommend putting a TV series or something on and if it is one sided, just watch until the battle is over

  • @gameglarb This is because your obviously going up against more experienced players and that should not be the case.
I go through this once in a while and then the occasional player that types in the "Rolling on deck laughing" 10 times in a row along with a text message to your inbox making fun as well.
This is when it becomes a huge annoyance.

Even though once in a while i've been able to get back to them with swift revenge, if it were up to me i would have a special place for these players either banning them or some hardmode punishment where they have a one hit death for a period of time or just something to give them payback for their abusive attitude. 😂

They could also use some of the tricks they use for seasons. Award gold, doubloons and season renown as you advance in allegiance levels.

Doing hourglass is actually pitiful seasonal progress, so I'm surprised they don't offer renown boosts at all.

  • @d3adst1ck But hourglass already rewards gold, doesn't it? And idk how much of a problem the lack of renown is, I mean you can easily make it through the season pass by just playing the game

  • @tenlo I was thinking of doing something similar where I just lossfarm off to the side while I play a different game. That way I can have fun doing something while still gaining allegiance

  • @eva1977 Actually, I usually find matches against non-sweats. And yet I still sink 100% of the time, because the only thing I can do someone well is Pirate-to-Pirate combat. I'm terrible at naval lol.

You only get gold if you lower hourglass. If you're losing, you're not turning in hourglass. If you're also limited on play time but want to complete the season, you need to choose between adventure and hourglass, because hourglass gives hardly any renown beyond sailing miles.

Both of these things would help to increase participation. If the choice is between Hourglass, where you will maybe get some gold and slow allegiance gain or to just do adventure where you're bombarded with positive feedback (season renown, gold, reputation, commendations, etc...) it's easy to see why a lot of players are not bothering with Hourglass.

  • @d3adst1ck True. I would love to see more players in hourglass, mostly because I really, really do not want it to end up like Arena (I started playing long after Arena was removed, but I know what happened to it)

  • @gameglarb I'm the opposite, fair at naval, terrible at pirate to pirate.

  • @eva1977 I would honestly much rather be in your situation... Naval is just more useful imo

  • @gameglarb I found it easier to learn naval combat but pirate to pirate i've practiced and practiced but some players just have so much skill.
I think the best way i recommend to getting used to the cannon physics and how they are affected by variants such as waves, angles, movement, etc. is by fighting ghost ships but starting off by trying to be as close to it as possible that every cannon you fire hits it, then gradually start trying to be farther away so you understand exactly the trayectories of cannons and why they do what they do and how distance is sort of the same thing but with bigger angles that you need to calculate.
Anyways i think thats how i started out since in the beginning i used to miss a lot of cannons whenever ships were far because i did not know how cannons were affected by the physics.

  • @eva1977 Yeah, its just hard to calculate where you need to aim and stuff when your getting blasted off the cannon every four seconds

  • @gameglarb This might not be the best strategy for that since everyone has their own opinion of what works for them but whenever i go up extremely skilled cannoneers, sunk and then go up against them again i try to stop my ship and turn it as quickly as possible so when they are approaching i have an angle but they don't and this gives me some time just so i can take their initial advantage away.

  • @d3adst1ck

Not to downvote your argument, but i think that wouldnt reach the audience in question. It sounds like a good idea, but i believe it will vanish into the numbers. I could be wrong here cuz we worked ahead on gold for longer periods and might be use to having a bit. im empty now though, and as a result i have been very happy on cashing out hourglass after a win for what it gives, and thats only 1 in streak. In other words, that reward already exist, thus i think it will vanish into the numbers.

As for renown, i dont think people who have trouble reaching renown 100 in a season are the same people that are trying to get lvl 100 in hourglass.

I think its has to be a happy punch with a stronger feeling of progress. I think the a weapon set like i mentioned would be a better example then.

Edit: saw what you wrote further down, could be great then actually, but still think its the wrong audience in the larger picture.

  • @gameglarb

There is actually some luck in the picture here. Riding a wave can dip or heighten your cannon shots both in aim and upon firing. The wave can then block your view, wich also blurrs where you fire aswell as confuse you as to how far away a boat is. Finaly i think whoever is on the side which the stream is coming from is at a disadvantage, or at least it looks like that in my head, with what i have mentioned in mind. Never heard of strategy around placement on waves.

  • One tip which seemed to work for me as I'm an average cannoneer and hate how prolonged solo sloop can be, is go for a ram. You do mass damage to their ship if you hit with the bow of your ship and you'll get one small hole. You can then usually follow this up with some cannon shots which can sink an unwary player if you're lucky.

If not you'll get pelted and sink quickly so you can go to your next battle

What if HG had its own (free) "battle pass" type of progression?

Win or lose, as you participate more, you progress more on this new reward track. At each level, you unlock either gold, doubloons, seasonal rep, or throw in a cosmetic here and there.

I've seen a suggestion for "xp-boost vouchers" in another thread, which could be purchased once a month from Larinna - like Letters of Rec., except rather than granting full levels, they boost the allegiance earned (for a set amount of time) once used. Maybe these could also be awarded at various levels in this new battle pass.

Those are all great ideas along the same vein - positive feedback. You'd think Rare would have learned this through their experience with the renown system. If you constantly are awarding players for doing something, they are going to keep doing it. Hourglass has a very obvious lack of positive feedback compared to other activities, so it gets played less and it gets worse when other things are available to occupy a players time (e.g. 400+ new levels of trading company rep).

More cosmetics in the lower levels, more rewards (gold/doubloons), XP boosters, etc... would all be great. Even daily deeds to participate in a match would help (but isn't very repeatable and would probably just result in a lot of one-and-done). A lot of players are discouraged from the system because they might not be great, or just that the tradeoff of time spent vs. reward they are receiving is not worthwhile.

    This. Massively this.
I would think that there would be rewards/milestones added from 200 to 1000 (such as cosmetics/titles every 50 or 100 levels) long before there are new additions to the 0-100 grind, and I hope to see more additions along that route in order to raise incentive for players who have all of their unlocks up to Level 200.

  • i dont know why people pretend pvp is fun. They should either remove or move the curses to another commendation. Id rather get r4ped than play hourglass
