Suggestion - Mooring 'Fees' at Outpost for auto repair and/or Captain's supplies

  • This would only apply to Captained ships, but would keep in line with S11 of getting to your session quicker.

Put something in the settings for an option for mooring at the outpost.
The settings would present a couple options.
Option 1 - Auto Ship Repair
1 - No Cost to moor, you start with previous damage
2 - Auto repair all damage to your ship, this could be 3,000 gold or something around the average cost to repair a ship for each session. This would mean some sessions you would spend more, but some would be less than usual to have your ship repaired.
    Option 2 - Supplies
1 - No cost, start with standard supplies
2 - Start with core captained supplies (Wood, Cannonballs, Food). Cost of each of those items combined, minus 500 gold perhaps
3 - Start with all captained supplies (Wood, Cannonballs, Throwables, Food, Meat, and Bait). Cost of all combined, minus 1000 gold perhaps.

This would certainly tie into the theme of S11 with increasing the speed of getting to a meaningful point to start the session, and it would also reduce the chance of spending several minutes staring at a shipwright while they try to find what you need and ultimately fail...

I do think we need more gold sinks in the game. I think sovreigns should take a cut of everything you sell so there’s a reason to still turn it at the trading companies.

Nothing you listed here adds anything we don’t already have other than making things happen automatically, which we don’t need more of.

Things that happen should require player action. If you can just change something in the settings so that something can occur without you even thinking about it, you’ve just negated/trivialized gameplay.

Is going to talk to someone and clicking through a few menus ( and often not even being able to do what you what to for whatever reason, because of some server issues) really 'gameplay'. If you really enjoy the extra time at an outpost before actual 'gameplay' you can keep those settings untouched. Personally I would rather just have my ship set up and ready to go when I log in. In all the hours I've played this game I can't say stocking up a ship to go was the best time I've had. I'd rather be on my way to something meaningful.
This would only apply to the first time you log in to a session, not being respawned at an outpost after a sink (to somewhat punish the sink).

So I've seen this argument in many games over the years when the "Quality of Life" upgrades start to arrive and cheapen everything.

Here's the issue. Every system can be broken down smaller and smaller until you reach a point where you can ask "Is this really gameplay?". Is stocking up on food really gameplay? Why not just let my health start regenerating after a set a mount of time? Is having to adjust the sails really gameplay? I mean it's not like its challenging. Tilt left or right until it billows. Why can I only carry 10 cannonballs? Why do I have to make a bunch of trips from a barrel to my ship if I don't have a storage crate?

And yeah, any single one of those systems on their own doesn't look like much, but they all contribute to an overall experience. When you start chipping away at them, the overall experience starts to weaken. Players don't generally see this. They're focused on the part of the experience where they get the biggest dopamine hit and anything slowing them down from getting there is seen as 'boring'.

The continuation of this arc is whatever the new flavor of the month phone game is. Lots of flashes, coin sounds and numbers going up. Because that provides dopamine, so let's put as much of it in a place and provide ALL of the dopamine, then everyone will love our game the most!

  • Personally, I’d rather not have a one button buys everything I need fee and get to sailing immediately. Nothing wrong with a bit of setup for the session, buy some crates, quickly run around the island for pocket supplies, and get on my way. 5 minutes at most. At least make it feel like a pirate simulator.
