That 'single player' mode is still using the online servers.
So you'll either have to own the game, or use game pass.@bree9321 as the the other have said Safer Seas that's your single player mode....that or sail in the Devils Roar but sea of thieves is a multiplayer game not a single player game
Microsoft Flight Simulator can be played without a subscription on Xbox despite being online at all times as well. You just can't interact with other players.
Whether you own Sea of Thieves or not, a subscription is always mandatory to play it on Xbox. Now that Safer Seas exists, @Bree9321 has a point. They're asking about an option to play without the subscription, not offline.
@liberance Safer Seas also allows up to 3 crew mates, which is handled by Xbox Live Services.
On a more general note, there is no 'Offline' or 'Single-player' version of Sea of Thieves.
Yeah, I understand. In that case, the non-subscription option simply wouldn't allow you to have friends on the ship. Just to be clear, I'm not advocating this. But Safer Seas did open the door to that conversation, so I'm not surprised someone is bringing it up.
At the end of the day, having to pay a subscription on Xbox to be able to do the same things PC players can do without one will always be a thorny issue and I think everyone can agree it just doesn't feel super fair on the consumer's side. So at the very least, the more alternatives to alleviate this, the better. That part I can get behind.
@liberance Even if you don't join/invite friends, you are still on an online server as the game is hosted on an online server.
Yes, that is clear. But it doesn't change the points being made.
As mentioned, there are other online games out there on console that do not require a subscription to play. Flight Simulator, Journey, Death Stranding. Now, I suppose the official line is "Microsoft's policy for the Xbox is that any game requiring connection to a server can only be played with an active subscription." That is also clear. Setting aside the old argument that PC players do not need this, I believe what @Bree9321 was getting at is that maybe there could be an alternative to at least play the game single player that did not require the subscription. I don't play it like that a lot, but it's certainly an option now, it may even be the preferred option for some, and at that point always requiring the console subscription seems a bit of a stretch.
Anyway, likely never gonna happen. But that's the point, I think. Not an issue misunderstanding policies or how the game works.
I own a hard copy of the game on xbox. And it does say on the cover you'll need xbox live to play.
I had to take the best part of a year off sea of thieves when I cancelled by gamepass in favour of Ubisoft+ as there was some games I wanted to play on that.
Somedays I miss the old school simplicity of buying something, popping in a cassette or a disc and playing instantly. No installs or updates. Back when studios would release a finished game.
