Safer Seas 10 Min AFK Timeout should be removed.

  • Are 10 minute AFK Timeouts really necessary in Safer Seas? Even playing solo? Spent alot of time sailing solo (bunch of treasure) trying to enjoy your game (again - after Safer Seas came out because i didn't enjoy PVP), I step away to cook dinner for the fam. only to come back to a blank screen.

I'm moaning and groaning over something minuscule but cmon...at least give a warning.

"Hey Pirate, if you go inactive for 10 mins we'll kick you out and you'll lose all your hard earned booty! FYI."

Probably won't be playing at all anytime soon. Bad taste. Not worth my time. But oh well!

  • @philbeauplys the afk timer is there for alot of things, but also for fellow crew members so someone isnt just leaching by just sitting there.

Another reason for this is, while you are casually sitting there afk it costs rare money to keep that server instance online for you.

Imho if you are going to do something that takes longer then 10 minutes, just sell and sign off and come back when you have more time

  • @callmebackdraft I do understand the need for an AFK timer. Hence the FYI in my OP. I would have sold everything had I known. Thanks for the reply. It's nice to be heard. :)

  • @philbeauplys it's only an issue once. How would an FYI work? If the prompt comes up when you've started idling it's likely too late and if it came up randomly during gameplay it would be annoying.

  • Although I've only ever Lazybearded once in over 3000 hours (and that was when I was trying to organise emotes), I'm going to go against what a lot of other regulars say here, and agree... to an extent.

In my opinion, it should be 10 mins for Open Crews only - where you would be likely wasting the time of strangers. 20 mins for a closed crew, which is likely a bunch of friends, and 30 mins on Safer Seas. It shouldn't be indefinite though, servers cost money to run.

A warning isn't going to do anything if the player is AFK and not able to see it, but the Lazybeard error screen could give more information about what leads to the timeout.

  • Go the old fashioned way and lay something on your controller so you continuously spin or your keyboard so you continuously move forward lol

  • step away to cook dinner

As an adult. If you must do this, you know it time to logoff and quit. Don’t be wasting server space.

  • Rubber bands and USB cords are your friends 😋

Just an fyi, you should not do this.

You can get in trouble for afk bypassing if someone comes along and records you doing it.

The afk timer is specifically there to keep people active in the game and stop wasting up server space and probably more important, server bandwidth.

Now if you'd like to increase the timer, I'm good with 15 minutes.

Yes, it's necessary, since you're still using the public servers for your own instance.
Just log out if you're going to be gone for more than 10 minutes? It's not your own private server.

  • Safe seas is not actually a solo mode in the same way other games do solo play. Safer seas still takes up a server stamp, and if some one goes afk for possibly hours, that means that server is being wasted on nothing, and as the launch of safer seas shows, there is a limited number of servers, so they have to boot people not utilizing it just like normal servers so that server capacity isnt being wasted.

I will agree that the afk timer is a little short some times for any situation.

I don't think that is necessarily the case. There is still a longer time before setting sail on Safer Seas and I get the impression from that delay that servers are spun up as required - unlike High Seas servers which are always up (well, at least for 48 hours or so) and you join one. The much longer wait times at launch were probably down to initial allocation of Azure PlayFab servers, but Azure servers are supposed to scale to population anyway.

I agree, as I said above, that there shouldn't be an indefinite AFK cooldown, but a moderately longer one on Safer Seas seems reasonable enough to me given that it's not really impacting other players in the same way as going AFK on an Open Crew, for example.

  • I think the solo timer could be extended to 15 mins, outside of solo you can be reinvited to the crew if it was an amicable afk and not just leeching from a crew but if solo the whole session is lost. I have heard if you use hide emote it extends timer but not properly tested

  • @hiradc

You can't do Open Crew on Safer Seas so the chances are high that the crew all know each other, so I'd say the vast majority aren't going to mind a friend going AFK for a bit.

As for extending the timer with an emote, that does at least seem to be the case with any persistent emote (like hiding, sleeping, sitting, dancing, or any looped emote).

  • @realstyli yes but no mechanics are being designed specifically for safer seas so I'm viewing any function as having to work on either

I know op was regarding safer seas but my response was just in general.
