FOTD server merge

  • I'm just trying to understand server merges and their timing. I rolled up on an active FOTD where there was a 2- man brig who previously stole a COF from me and ran. I showed up, started doing damage to there ship and killed them on the fort, then jumped to their ship, killing them again and doing more damage, all the while my ship sank. So I hop off and take a merm. Spawn on the nearest island and then halfway through dropping my sails, server merge... Frozen and watching my ship run into an island, I was itching to head towards the skull in the sky, which then disappeared... I had a good opportunity to return and take them out to secure the fort for myself, but rare had other plans... Anyone else have something similar happen?

  • Also I was solo idk if that makes a difference.

  • You got Rare’d.

  • Sounds to me that you were the only two ships on the server and once you wrecked their day, they rage quit and left you as the only ship on the server. Once you popped anchor, boom. Merge.

  • We can speculate, but nobody is going to know why specifically it happened to you in that moment. All we know is that sometimes, it happens. It's not often, in fact, it's very rare...some would say it's called being Rare'd

  • @thegrimpreacher I've been merged on a few occasions with ships still in the server. One incident I remember very well. We got into a server with a Grade 5 Reaper stacking FotD. We were sailing around stocking up at forts for the inevitable fight once they finished. About half way thru we merged out. 100% they were still in the server.

Good rule of thumb: if you are in a server you don't want to get merged out of, keep one player off your boat at all times. In the OPs case, he was solo, so really no way to prevent it, other than prayer ;)

  • @sammyr0cks

I've had it happen on, ahem rare occasions as well, of course. Not to say it NEVER happens for other reasons.

It's just the balance of probability is in favor of the standard reason for a server merge; one solo ship remaining.

  • @bartleb8898

You were too far away from the fight and the system thought it was a safe merge. If you have a clip, send a support ticket.

Did you go back and the other ship wasn't there?
I have additional troubleshooting questions I'd like to ask...

  • So I hop off and take a merm. Spawn on the nearest island and then halfway through dropping my sails, server merge

    Found the answer.

  • My knowledge in this field isn't solid, but this is a textbook "solo moment".

Now contrary to popular belief, not every server is that empty. Enemy crews could still be holding a fort down, but because you sank nearby an enemy boat, it's likely you got relocated completely out of their rendering range, and by extension, other ships as well.

This means the game will believe you are sailing "alone" and need to be sent to a more active server, even though you shouldn't: you just came out of an intense battle on the server you're on. Most crews prevent this usually by not having the full crew on board the ship while all on-board need to raise anchor and lower sails to proceed on, this often happens with inexperienced crews as their spawns are either very lucky to prevent server merging, or the crew has staggered respawns due to still being alive where they sank and not taking their mermaid back to the ship immediately.

As a solo? You don't have that advantage or option, it's all complete and utter LUCK you don't get server merged. The enemy crew didn't leave the server, you got jettisoned out of another chance to fight your enemy because your respawn was so far and so bad, that the game had to send you to another server so you can get "back into the action". A soul-crushing consequence to people's complaints about enemy ship respawns.

I've watched this happen to/with my friends, several streamers, and even SoT Partners. It's a phenomenon that, depending on your mood before merging, is a clear cut sign to log off for the rest of the day, because Rare just robbed you of revenge for losing your ship.
