Game barely runs on more than capable computer

  • i have a Ryzen 9 3900x and a RTX 2070s. I play on the Gamepass one other games run just fine, except Sea of Thieves.
game seems to only use around 20-30% of my GPU for some reason. haven't found any fix, and I've been looking.

  • @thederpydoge420 Raise a support ticket.

  • @thederpydoge420 Is it possible adrenaline is doing something wonky with this specific title?

  • SoT is a CPU intensive game, not GPU. You can try playing around with the settings a bit, both in game and out, but the bottleneck will always be the CPU for it.

  • @abjectarity How did you come to the conclusion that Sea of Thieves is a CPU intensive game? And what is the significance of this considering that the OP is using an AMD CPU of the latest generation.

CPU specs can be easily found in the Sea of Thieves support article (last updated June 22nd 2023) over here.

According to the specs provided above, ULTRA(MYTHICAL) graphics settings or in other words "the most extreme option" recommends INTEL I7 4790 @ 4GHZ or AMD RYZEN 5 1600 @3.6GHZ. Comparing OP's CPU and the recommended one can be easily done by any CPU online benchmark, with my example over here.

As you can see from the benchmarks, OP's CPU is more than capable enough for Sea of Thieves, at least according to the recommended specs. The problem with Sea of Thieves, as has already been mentioned multiple times in these forums and is the case with many other games as well, is that it locks itself to the usage of only 2 cores, even if more are available. This behavior causes Sea of Thieves to experience a CPU bottlenecking GPU in specific scenarios (looking at you, Port Merrick), where users may notice FPS drops despite their GPUs running at low usage.

  • @abjectarity i have a ryzen 9 3900x, my computer could easily run a 4000 series card. the game was running fine a day ago.

  • @thenestiik how would I fix this then? its absolutely unplayable on ANY island, not just Port Merrick. how do people even play the game when it runs this poorly???

  • @thederpydoge420 Did anything else change on your system? The fact that the game was running fine a day ago would indicate this something changed.

The other option is that maybe you got caught by some overloaded server during community weekend. If you log in today do you get the same issues?

  • @thederpydoge420 Fallout 3 had a similar issue I think. I'm not sure if this would be allowed, but it might be possible to tweak your config files with notepad to rectify that 2 core thing. But it's gonna take a lot of reading.

  • @crowedhunter OP replied later that his game was running normally a day before so I doubt the issue is what I've mentioned in my replies above.

This is the most reasonable course of action right now.
