Thrilled to Return, but Cautious

  • 'Safer Seas' is bringing me back as a player. I played this game constantly throughout 2019 before dropping it for a wide variety of reasons. While a lack of content drove that ship, the constant time wasted through PVP was no aid in my desire to stay.

One of the greatest hindrances to this franchise is how unforgiving and inaccessible it has become to new players. I'm absolutely thrilled to introduce friends to the franchise in a much more controlled environment where they can get their 'Sea Legs'.

Yet I am cautious. I am cautious because I believe many of us will return only to find a lack of PVE content long term, as the goal of Safer Seas is to funnel all players back into High Seas. I have no desire to return to that experience, yet I want to play the game and have content to enjoy.

So I know there is no long term stay or investment here. Instead I'll have some short adventures with old friends who are new to SoT, exhaust the available content over the holiday season, then vacuum out for a true PVE game.

It's sad considering how incredible the world of SoT is and how unique the gameplay loop is. Yet without endgame incentive (for a formerly endgame player) there will be no reason to stay. So instead myself and my friends will spike the numbers, then leave Rare wondering what happened after a month or two, the answer being folks desiring a true PVE version, not the bastardized nonsense they're releasing.

  • Have fun. =)

  • @starbrightnight wow, that's kinda rude.

The mods do a very good job policing this place, and it isn't an easy job either.

  • Safer seas and the game as a whole have already won because of,

The people that are excited for the qol it will bring them and are not asking for more reward.

The people that say "yeah I'll chill there sometimes to relax in between high seas sessions"

If they truly want this to improve the environment as a high seas focused game then they have already won.

As it exists it is designed to help the people that will do well here. People that just want some opportunity without expecting their preferences to be catered to, without wanting to change the foundation of the game to serve them. It's already won, the people that will use safer seas long term either as their only place to go or as a hybrid experience have already won.

It's jut a matter of releasing it so everyone can settle in.

  • Well your problem is kinda there... you want to only PVE in a game where the endgame is PVEVP, then you decry that the experience is lacking?

If you order a meal and only like/eat half of it and then you are still hungry, you didn't order the right thing to begin with, that's not the chef's fault.

I wish you to enjoy safe seas as much as you can, and find yourself a true PVE game that will suit you and your friend's needs better if you don't.

Without trying to sound confrontational or rude, perhaps dipping after the next few months would be for the best for you. The reason I say that is because what you desire (in bold) is basically the antithesis of what the game was founded on. I agree that it's a shame they are releasing the 'bastardized nonsense', it dilutes the ethos of the game but ultimately they listened to the significant (and noisy) minority of the community that wanted an offline PvE experience in place of an online PvPvE one.

I think the catering to certain parts of the fan base has gone beyond the point of reason, the devs have truly exhausted themselves trying to make the experience as rewarding for the majority as possible. At some point it has to stop. You guys will have this SS environment to enjoy, enjoy it for what it is, a pale imitation of what the full retail experience is and should be.

  • @bloodybil Assassin's Creed Black Sails is still a pretty decent game, as old as it is.

    *Black Flag, my bad.

  • what a bastardized post, the endgame of SOT is called PVP...

or hunting giant sharks and playing the banjo all day like it's a Louisiana saturday night

    either way works

  • The game design and intent for Sea of Thieves is a shared world adventure, and it always will be. Those who wish to play in the confines of Safer Seas will always have the option but we will not bring the rewards and activities in line with those of High Seas when many of the restrictions are in place due to the risk vs reward factor that is inherent in Sea of Thieves - removing any risk means rewards must be balanced accordingly.

Safer Seas will act not only as a safe space for our Tall Tale players but also for families with children who just want to pirate, for people who want to play the game but learn the ropes and it will organically feed into Adventure mode, keeping the player pool there healthy and upskilled as they've learned the mechanics.

This is not only useful for new players but families, players with accessibility needs - the whole game suddenly become available in a way it hasn't before, letting them naturally progress to High Seas and being a Pirate Legend. SoT has grown a huge amount in 5 years and it can be fairly overwhelming.

The borders put in Safer Seas mean that to experience the full depth and breadth of the game you will have to hit the high seas BUT if you're playing with your family you don't have to, you can just enjoy the game and have fun as a family.

This is the intention for Safer Seas with no intention to add a full PvE mode. As such we will go ahead and drop anchor on this here.
