High Seas or Safer Seas

  • With safer seas coming in December…what will you chose to sail on?

    I’m hoping the high seas aren’t lonely…

    Cheers 🍻

  • Personality wise I'm just not built for safer seas. I'm not here for that kind of play. I enjoy pirate watching. I like seeing how people play the game, like when they set up stealth plays, when they randomly interact with me.

I'm far too attached to Captaincy and the thrill of a higher risk meg hunt to give that up as well.

I think safer seas is great. I personally know people that will very much love having it as an option and I also know it will truly offer qol to some players of the game. I think it's great.

High seas stresses quite a few people out, it has the opposite effect on me, it chills me out. To me the action isn't serious, I've grown attached to the intensity without any serious consequences. Essentially I kinda became a gamer later in life lol, at least for this game.

I love how many real-life strategies and how much non-gaming experience can be used while playing high seas. It's interesting to me. Navigating my way around SoT never really bores me.

  • High seas. Because I’m aware what I bought and aware of the risks.

  • Why choose? Both will have their perks.

    • On one hand: I play both solo and with small crews and love the excitement of High Sea and the unpredictability where anything can happen during our adventures
    • And on the other: On nights where I want to watch movies while fishing, or do chill voyages without wanting to have my head on a swivel, I look forward to hang out in safer seas as well despite making a bit less gold, the peace of mind will balance the payoff for that occasion

I love that you don't have to choose a side, you can play both depending on how you feel that particular session! And safer seas won't take away from high sea because of the fair balance in the limitations involved.

  • Safer Seas practically always.

I might peek into high seas every now and then to see if the good has started to outweigh the bad, but I can't say it'll be often.

  • @vito1700

High Seas. As an older gamer, though, I do have a lot of gamer friends with kids, and some of them do play with their kids. I’ll definitely recommend that option to them when/if they decide to play SoT.

  • A (hopefully unnecessary) point of clarification, it is not a one-and-done choice between the two.

Everyone is welcome to sail on both Safer Seas and High Seas at any point.

As @BloodyBil mentioned, some days you might just want some unpredictability and the potential of some random other crew interactions or some PvP but yet some days.... you might just... not.

Some days you might feel the desire for some naval battles and fighting, other times, maybe just some fishing, Tall Tales or just simply doing nothing without the risk of your peace (or that PERFECT screenshot....) being interrupted.

Either way, Pirates are free to choose every sail.

  • Safer seas for Tall Tales and maybe for playing the game for the first time with my niece and nephew.

High Seas for basically all other times.

The devs sure did a good job of persuading a veteran player like myself not to play safer seas with all the restrictions and reward nerfs.

  • Might go to do a couple of forts to get Ashen Lords achievements easier. Been playing high the whole time already.

  • I wish there was a shrouded tracker kind of like a storm tracker for shrouded ghosts killed on safer seas.

I would keep up with the shrouded times while I hunted the high seas.

I'd be interested in stuff like that to see how people are doing on the servers.

  • @wolfmanbush If there was a way to predict/guarantee a Shrouded Ghost...it would have been on eBay by now! 😂

I understand that!I was simply asking what everyone’s go to choice is going to be…sounds like a mix. Thanks all!

I feel like I’m back in kindergarten with you critiquing the post!

lol, I just like when people have their shrouded ghost moment

  • @wolfmanbush

I presume it works like this.

There’s timers involved. When it’s time for a Meg to spawn it’s simply a game of chance.

Basically like spinning a slot machine.

The chance of a shrouded spawning is like hitting a jackpot (extremely rare).

Hopefully one day Rare decides not to gatekeep the shrouded ghost from its players to this extreme and increases the odds one will spawn to an acceptable level.

People with thousands of hours should have multiple shrouded ghost’s vanquished by then.

TLDR there’s no way to track the shrouded ghost.

  • @vito1700 I wasn't critiquing the post, merely providing information that may have been missed or overlooked by some thinking it was a final choice.

Yes, it will be a mix, as some people (depending on mood) will choose one over the other for each sail.

I'm just talking about knowing about kills, not predicting them.

Safer seas kills are something that I see as pure shrouded ghost spawn. No alliance meg hunts and manipulating servers for meg spawns, a pure shrouded spawn. Something that I'd be excited about people experiencing.

A beautiful thing, I wanna hear about 'em.

  • High Seas.

Safer Seas maybe for fishing or doing animals, don´t need this mode for anything more than that.

Get ready for the huge waves of newbies crying because Safer is not a Pve Mode

  • Small point. I say once all the pve players start sailing the safe seas. The high seas will become much more friendly. Idk it feels like it gonna happen

No more treads of players complaining about being sunk or attacked while “playing high seas”

Which should make for a better passive setting for high seas. Which in turn, everyone just gonna be “ok” XD

There might be a week or two of a bit of a noticeable difference for some but I doubt this will change the feeling of servers much overall.

In my experience the end of the year Holiday time is more active organically no matter what is going on, add in safer seas bump in interest and it'll probably be pretty similar with just more new/casual activity.

In general the game is in a really strong spot right now. Not everyone is happy but the activity is quite healthy, they really improved the relationship between pve and pvp since season 8, this new voyage is great. Pvp can be pretty exhausting as far as the metas go but the servers are doing pretty awesome for varied interest.

Guild activity seems to be pretty solid, I've seen more guild activity that I thought I would. I've seen quite a few grade 5's gettin' after it.

  • Normally High Seas. Can't really think of a reason I would log into Safer, but maybe for some special situation.

  • Since high seas offers such a massive boost to loot, im pretty sure most people will opt for that still.

I think the few who are saying they will only play safe seas to keep their loot safe dont realize just how little 30% and no emissary actually is. Even if you get sunk half the time you haul loot by some chance, with an emissary, you will make so much more than you would on the safety of safe seas.

I really do hope to find it some day soon! I have been saying to some one, if some one ever tucked on my ship and started playing the theme for it, i would so frantically slam the anchor and fall for it! If that song ever plays, its going to be the fastest i ever hit the anchor!

And if i do ever kill it, then i will put the title on and always deny its existence from that point on!

I love when it happens to people. The most wholesome content to me is when people capture their encounter.

That's why I love how rare it is and never want to see it cheesed, that's why I support it on safer seas, it being so rare makes it so special for people.

One of the best things Rare decided to do in this game imo.

That's assuming they're worried about optimizing their gold earning. Some might just enjoy the act of playing and aren't overly concerned with how much it gets them.

It'll be awesome for meg hunters that just want to chill and take out a meg and a kraken and maybe catch some fish without player encounters.

Not going to be something that a lot of people will be talking about social areas but I think there will be quite a bit of it happening.

Someone like me will stop for every emergent spawn no matter the pvp situation and that life ain't for everyone so a lot of emergent content becomes "escape it, get away from it, run" but with safer seas it offers an opportunity for people to get involved in those types of encounters without the stress of "will I be attacked".

That's my hope anyway, I want some meg/kraken hunters out there enjoying the content.

That is true, but a lot of people i have seen say they will play it exclusively because they are tired of losing their loot, implying they want the loot in specific, but may not realize they will make much less than having some stolen!

It's a trade-off for sure. You can stack loot with impunity, but need over three times as much. They'll have to decide if the (nearly) guaranteed payday is worth the extra time.

For some, just the knowledge that no other players are around may be enough for them. That was the big hurdle for me in my early days with Sea of Thieves.

Personally, gold doesn't matter much for me. I'm not interested in any of the gold sink cosmetics or anything, so Safer Seas is fine by me. But I'll still play in High Seas as well because I'd miss running into other players completely.

Sure, 95% of them just try and kill me, but my "weaponized apathy" mindset makes even those encounters enjoyable in their own way.

  • The original idea of the game was players making stories together.

I have the best stories to tell from my interactions with other players and somewhat surprisingly very few of those stories involve me sinking them.

I will be mostly sailing on High Seas but will also be putting up LFG's offering my services and tales of High Seas adventure to new and returning swabbies on safer seas

  • High seas. Even for fishing.

Even tho Im at the point in game where the gold or handicaps wouldn't matter to me.

Sea of thieves without thieves or any human interaction wouldn't be the same game for me.

  • As a day 1 player, I just can’t do safer seas! It’s in my blood to sail the high seas…I love it!

    Cheers 🍻

This is a pretty unique game. It brings in a lot of casual adventurers but it's always had pockets of unexpected (to many) intense situations that push people quite a bit.

On the surface it's the pretty fantasy game with goofy pirate stuff but there are pretty intense combat situations with players and the whole stealth/ambush element that can really mess with people. I've seen it mess with people from pretty much every group, not just casual/inexperienced players.

Some people adapt to that over time and it becomes manageable but it definitely messes with some people longer term.

A lot of games don't have this because of the design of combat, like 15+ minute matches where people are all on the same page and know what will be happening. This silly pirate game can be quite a bit more intense than a lot of other gaming experiences.

Something that has longed irked me is how people end up feeling pressured to pvp as an effect of the social parts of SoT, trying to fit in. It burns people out quite often in one way or another. Gets people into situations that they often aren't really compatible with.

I'm hoping we've reached a point in SoT where people find more balance in participation so that things chill out a bit and people find more variety in play rather than just "I gotta pvp all the time, everyone else is doing it, contentcontentcontent, clicks, views", hoping safer seas helps some with that, at least for the newer generation of SoT players that will be the veteran players someday.

  • How do i switch from one mode to the other i selected one but would like to be abke to change modes i was told if i started a new session i could but i havent seen the option.
