I think SoT got one of the most insane - and funny - pvp, that said, watching it is hella funny, and that is what makes esports funny, watching a exhilarating match. Knowing that Rare is doing some "pvp" focused improvements, such as hitmarker, anti-cheat and changing sails that help you see better, is there any chance that RARE would start doing esports tournaments?
Would Rare promote Esports Events?
@wolfmanbush I thought of that, metagaming could be abolished with some measures, things like LoL did in 2013 or something like that: delay on players streams and etc(provided directly by the game launcher), I understand that the community is not compatible, specially with a big part of it being kids and etc, but it could take a lot more players, because, as i said, pvp matches are just fun to watch

Content creators and their friends put on some pretty cool pvp events from time to time and imo it's probably about as good as it gets for SoT pvp competition.
There are charity events that happen regularly as well that are pretty cool events.
Cool stuff does happen around the community but I think it's a real tough game to pull off more than that, as far as serious competition goes.
I think that SoT is very different from the average competitive game, which is good. Most other competitive games require game knowledge, aiming skill, communication, and strategy. Sea of Thieves requires all of that plus naval combat and resource management. It also has team roles, while also getting out of the constricting tank, damage, support archetypes that's in other games.
The thing about esports is, there always needs to be a level playing field in the players' eyes. That includes random events.
Sea of Thieves is good because of how different each session is. Hourglass is fun, but gets even better when a random thing happens like a fog covering some of the battlefield.I would watch and probably even attempt to compete in SoT esports, but I think it just wouldn't be right. This is not a game made to be scrutinized about the viability of different strategies (though it is, of course). Not to mention, there just isn't enough interest in that to make it profitable.
This is the thing: If Rare doesnt "make it happen", it will not happen, it needs to initially have a starting point, where the company holding the game shows support about esports, and then, usually, it goes from there. More championships would start to emerge with money on it, then leagues, then everything. And, knowing the dark world esports is, with it being specially held by "betting companies", SoT would just be the heaven for that companies. But with not a official support in organizing tournaments, this would not happen. I know, Rare has a LOT of bigger things to do, but this would just attract investment on the game and etc etc. I just came from a important world esports event announcement in where i live and i was just thinking about how nice would be to see Sea Of Thieves PVP, cause i couldn't understand nothing about that Free Fire ShowMatch That happened
Giving another games examples, I would Specify a scenario here in Brasil. like in 2012 to 2016 there was a "amateur" championship regarding league of legends, where something like 4000 teams of different skill levels would participate, and it was just a INSANE experience, there was a lot of amateur tournaments in that time, but that one was the biggest, just because the game got the tools for it. It is a growing market, and knowing that SoT got a lot of "viewers" on platforms like twitch, there would be a market for tournaments too, you know? Because someone that see streams usually wants "action" and SoT is just a game with a lot of downtime, but the time that there is action, its a insane action.
While esports might be fun for some to watch and could bring in more money, attempting to "make it happen" is very often the start of a downward spiral for the game. Look at Overwatch as a perfecting example of how this negatively impacts both the game and it's community as the devs start to focus so heavily on esports that they completely ignored the majority of the playerbase, only paying attention to the feedback of the top 1% of players. This can also be seen in other games like Halo or League of Legends, where the rest of the playerbase gets treated like peasants because only the "pros" opinions matter. On top of that, Sea of Thieves was never intended to be anywhere near as sweaty as it got (a meta was something that the devs of Sea actively worked against allowing to form, even though they failed in that respect) and adding esports into the mix will only increase the already rampant sweat and toxicity that plagues the game. We've been through this nonsense with the whole streamer controversy a few years back, when a few bad eggs ruined it for everyone while the devs clung to them like a lifeline despite their constant breaking of TOS and encouragement of toxicity (to the point of even driving other streamers off the platform).
Simply put, while I'm normally highly against shooting down ideas on principle, this one has only negative impacts for the game and only a slight chance of monetary increase for the devs (and that's assuming that they handle it literally perfectly, which is an unreasonably high bar in this day and age).
@arvok13835
It's ok. I can see how it would be easy to get drawn into only seeing the positives if it's something you are very passionate about. But yeah, that level of competitive play is very much at odds with the vast majority of the game, both on the pve and the pvp sides of it. Even more so with the pvpve@arvok13835 said in Would Rare promote Esports Events?:

SoT ego runs deep.
The game didn't even have much of any adventure competitive design until season 8 and once HG was brought in the baseless accusations and arrogance were amplified significantly. Competition isn't a problem but people taking the game far too seriously is, imo.
A bunch of popular SoT players that regularly make sus accusations against people that aren't even doing anything truly suspicious is a tough starting point for more competitive play.
Imo they already have a history of leaning into too much serious pvp focused play as it is as far as what they boost up and bring into the network. It hasn't really served the game that well at all imo, it's a lot of cheesing servers and metagaming and drama/arrogance as content which really isn't a great advertisement for a game that has much more to offer than that.
I really don't think an adventure game needs more people with 5k+ hours of pvp calling new adventurers "trash, etc".
I don't think rare would push it themselves, nor do I think that they should.
Partners have had access to private servers for years now and many have even hosted tournaments themselves.
I dont think the viewership was too high tho.
Maybe if content creators formatted their tournaments a bit different then I could also see rare getting behind it.For example hosting an amateur tournament for charity and donors would get some kind of an unique sail or something and winner would get a recolored version of it.
Nope. Since the closure of The Arena they have been moving the game to be more casual and slowly fixing and improving some long time bugs/issues that has haunted the seas since the early days
NAL (Notorious Arena League) and SoC (Sea Of Champions) which was the closest esport events since you could earn yourself one of the most challenging sails like NAL sails or SoC Sails to flex and make every pirate run away in fear.
