Had my first Siren Song runner: Infuriating

  • Had my first runner with the Siren Song chest. We had the key.

They ran; all around the map. We tried everything we knew how to try and catch/slow them down, but we were both sloops and pretty evenly matched.

They didn't even try to board or lure me into a trap, just kept running.

This went on for about 45 minutes before we just left the key at an island and signed off.

I reported the coward but I'm sure it will just go unnoticed. Came here to vent.

Who enters a PvP/Competitive voyage and doesn't compete? Just a coward troll.

I hate the thought of letting these losers rack up skulls because they annoy other crews with running till they quit...

  • Sounds like the same people who do hourglass and just run around until the enemy quits.

This is a thing too? Gross. Some folks want the rewards and no risks.

  • Just a valid part of the deal imo.

They made it so it doesn't despawn and they prevented a bunch of ways to despawn/trap it in exploity type of stuff.

People fight in different ways, approach risk/reward in different ways, play cat and mouse in different ways, view things differently. Just a part of the shared experience.

It's a short voyage that is common, nothing really to attach to, not worth the drama and people get to play how they wanna play.

HG is different because it effects active streaks while keeping people pretty trapped.

This is just a common voyage where some work out and some don't.

I'm definitely not a supporter of running just to run for the purpose of messing with people's experience but I do support the freedom to do it.

I never really know what someone else is going through at that moment, personally, in the game, bugs, etc so I just never get much invested in the situation and move on.

  • I can sympathize that it doesn't make sense to run when it's meant to be a competitive event, just like it doesn't make sense not to fight during HG events.

    But......

In a sandbox, folks can play the way they want. It may be boring as hell, but they out lasted you and got the prize for it.

Its so easy to switch servers and play the quest over and over so it doesn't really hurt us.

    Reported for...what?

Who enters a PvP/Competitive voyage and doesn't compete?

Those who know how to get a Key from an island? You gave them what they wanted.

I hate the thought of letting these losers rack up skulls because they annoy other crews with running till they quit...

Sorry, but...sounds more like you gave up from here and they won the rewards. Good job

Exactly this, but also maybe you should also learn other techniques in which to catch up with and sink a running sloop. I am able to gain distance solo with another sloop but only by trial and error & coaching, it is hard work and it also depends on the competency of the other crew but it is doable. Also these quests are very consistent, I have had 4/5 pop up in 20-30min period over 2 hours on the same server, I am sure if you either main screen swapped server or tall tale portal hopped you would have found another quest to complete successfully (with or without PvP).

    Eliza!

  • @ollieoxenfree don't think its reportable behaviour, frustrating yes but against rules absolutely not.

In future dump the key, then just lay an ambush at the briggsy island. They've already demonstrated they are very uncomfortable with pvp

  • @hiradc just to add; dump the key hella far away from anything so you have time to make it to Briggsy when they open the chest

Bad faith participation is unfortunate in both modes; but at least with Siren Song you can go do other content while you wait for the runners to get bored, if you dont want to try your luck on a different server.

You could fire up your HG and defend while piling loot/waiting out the runners too

Edit these are just helpfull suggestions; not you should have done this or that statements

  • @soulstinger2k20 just scuttle tbh, 1 island over spawn 😅

  • @hiradc I havnt had a SoSS runner yet but yeah the spawn distances are nuts

    Competition without constraints is chaos.

I've said this before, but the last thing this game had that was close to resembling fair competition... was Arena. It had rules, though it had an objective that was only optional. One you could completely ignore and still win the match lol. And so most of us did ignore the chest and shoot at each other for points. But it at least had points - a scoring system to determine a winner. It had defined boundaries and a 15 min time limit.

Then we lost Arena, and Hourglass was shoehorned into Adventure, but this time with fewer constraints than Arena had. No time limits or tie breakers. No standardized supplies. No rules against interference from outside parties or PvE spawns. Just two ships load into a very wide zone, and... that's it. Then they fight. Unless one party chooses to avoid PvP, I guess. And then the other side has to decide whether they want to spend their time chasing these goofballs or abandon their current supplies + streak.

I haven't touched this new voyage. I was almost tempted after seeing folks on the forum say "it reminds me of Arena," but then when I asked my old Arena buddies, the consensus was "it's nothing like Arena." Lol. So I'm gonna pass for now.

But this seems like this is, unfortunately, just a valid part of the deal. Without constraints, this is what you end up with.

Also, yeah there's running to reset and running while you deal with bugs/issues. But if you're running for 45 min, that just seems like bad sportsmanship lol. But since when was sportsmanship ever part of Adventure?

SoT's Adventure PvP was never "fair," as you have variance in ship types, supplies, experience levels, gameplay styles and objectives. So if this is just another voyage they added to Adventure; another piece of treasure for the server to fight over, however they want, then the occurrence of running should almost be expected on some servers.

I'd be very surprised if Rare does anything to punsish or prevent it. People have done this with fort keys and stuff in the past too, myself included lol. And yes, for the purpose of "trolling." Ever had a server alliance chase after you? Very fun, highly recommend it. Is it good sportsmanship? Meh, probably not. But that's Adventure.

  • There is no counter to running other than to demast or anchorball or board and anchor.

Doesn’t matter if you pepper a ship with holes and it’s full of water it’s speed is unaffected.

There is no slipstream mechanic or wind steal mechanic to counter running.

And ships all have unique wind directions they can sail for a speed advantage over the other ships.

Masts that are snapped can be immediately caught to save time raising it back to a position to where it can be repaired. So unless you’re ship is in a good position when you snap their masts they may be able to catch and repair faster than you can capitalize on it.

All of the above combines together to create the running meta.

Basically if a crew wants to run and can guard ladders, there is not much you can do about it other than keep following them until one crew gets bored.

Running to run and the lack of counters to combat it is still a major issue that affects gameplay today.

One offensive measure I’ve suggested to help combat the running meta is the ability for crews to choose between two harpoons, two mini-cannons or one of each at the bow of their ship.

The running meta isn’t by accident either. It’s Rare. And you can tell it’s Rare because even when they release a new feature that is supposed to curse ships and slow them down …. It barely does anything. And even if it does, the cheese loving community just finds every possible way to circumvent the curse by use of harpoon rowboat or whatever. Or if you don’t want to chase the ship with the skull just scuttle and spawn closer to the turn in..

  • Be glad I can't hide it in the shrines, Treasuries and they gave pvp floating red sea loot.

    it could be much worse

Well, if you read some other post on these forums you’d think that running is impossible and people are getting sunk the moment another player looks at them.

I did see on a stream, a crew was too scared to fight, so they tried to bring it to a shrine and put it in a statue, but when they found out that doesnt work, and their toxicity has been foiled, they just rage quit. So they wasted all their time and the people i was watching still got the key.

  • @ollieoxenfree my motto for any fight
"If you can't out fight a crew out smart the crew" sounds like they ran until you gave up and left the key on an island, you could have hide the key on an island scuttled or hide your ship and hide on the island took them out when they showed up to collect the key instead you gave up

Yeah I had a giggle when the chest ripped out of my hands and headed surface ways lol. AFAIK, you can still take it to Tribute Peak so make sure you have that checkpoint...

  • We had a runner so for fun we put the chest on a skelly galley with a butch of food and scuttled. They came back thinking they were going to get a free key, we killed them and jumped back into our ship which spawned nearby. In short YOU could have been the one to build a trap.

  • Just checking something: Because their style of play kept you from what you feel you were entitled too you reported them? Perhaps their end goal was always for you to quit and their tactic paid off? You do realise that no loot on the game belongs to anyone until it has been turned in, right?

I'm not saying I'm a fan of what they did but try to see things from a place of objectivity, not subjectivity. They played the game, did their thing. You logged off, maybe they got the key and turned in the chest. Might be ugly but effective for them.

I really wish more people were open to the fact that there's not one play style on this game. Whether We like it or not, it's a fact.

  • @ollieoxenfree

I had a similar experience. My crew and I chased a sloop across the map. They ran into the Red Sea and we got the chest and key. Unfortunately the key wouldn’t unlock the chest. I don’t know if the Red Sea bugged out the chest but the crew teased us instead of dumping the chest and key.
