Music shop and quests for more shanties

  • I feel that while on the waves, I hear the same shanties and music constantly and I sometimes feel bored listening to the most iconic songs in the whole game especially when we know they can add more since we see that the second radius of possible songs that could be added. I feel that if the creators wanted to make a shanty/song themed season for their game, they can add a new “shop” (possibly next to the sovereigns if there is no room) to house possible new quests involving music and new shanties that could be made into the sea of thieves which could house 3 possible pros and 3 possible cons of this

    Pros:

    1. The shanties themselves could be related to new lore that the devs could want to implement either relating to Ramsey, our pirate, and other characters new or old, (for example: it could tell the story of gold hoarder before he became a skeleton lord)
    2. The quest themselves could have music based puzzles similar to the organ in Davy Jones’s ship in pirates life which could be simple or hard depending on the shanty
    3. Possible iterations of the enemies we face, we know about skeletons, ghosts, sirens, and sea crawlers that attack us whenever we do certain objectives in the sea of thieves but what we’re to happen if we came across new versions of the enemies with elemental abilities like for example, we could receive a ice wielding siren that could freeze our pirate for 3 seconds in the water if we are not careful or ghosts with the ability to make fire like the ashen lords do but could be weaker because they are ghosts. Idk I just came up with this because I thought these would be a cool set of mechanics that would make these quest types interesting

    Cons:

    1. This would be a lot to create, I am aware the sea of thieves dev team is a bit small which would be hard to produce a lot of songs ready for their viewers and have the game run smoothly
    2. When and where it would take place into the lore, I think this isn’t much of a con considering this could be used to explain the back story of the characters like Ramsey or flameheart but I feel it will be difficult for the devs to keep this accurate with the lore they have previously.
    3. Will this be really needed? I understand there is a lot the devs do for us and I understand if this idea is either can be good or bad but this is my personal idea of how to keep the “musical” part of the game alive.

  • More shanties are a good thing. We could get the other songs from Monkey Island

  • Another idea that came up is if the season of shanties and music is to be considered, I believe the devs could make a shanty version of “what do we do with a drunken sailor” and it would be such a iconic twist because this IS a pirate game with tankards WITH rum and the song is so iconic for being used in the Caribbean around the time of pirates but I feel like I’m pushing my luck because it is probably locked by copyright but I feel like I should add this in just to add to my post

  • @gamer1211060 love idea.

Enemies should be skelly or phantom ships musicians to fit the theme.

That could be a cool scene in a future mission or tall tale, bunch of skeletons playing some music.

  • @Foambreaker add to that commendation (with shanty reward) gained from joing them and playing. Fine way to add fiddles :)

  • @ghutar

That actually be a great idea lol

  • I found it interesting, I confess that I wish the music model was like it is in the game Mordhau I think the way they put the music is incredible, it's a shame that something like that would never come to Sea of Thieves

I believe the devs could make a shanty version of “what do we do with a drunken sailor”
We shall sail together is a remake of drunken sailor (the pirate legend song). It would be nice with new shanties tho.

  • @soul514y3r

I actually didn’t notice, still I wonder what the difference would be if it was changed to sound like the original song.

  • One last thing to add would probably be that a few of the quests will lead through the portal in the ferry of the damned. And I think u start to see the story unfold through memories and perspective through these pirate legends and villains, now HEAR ME OUT when I say this but what if during your adventure through the portal you get first person views through the character you learning of (like flameheart or Ramsey) and is able to hear the voice as if you are that character. It would be such a change because I feel like I am always stuck in my own pirate character, I want to see through the perspective of other pirates and understand their points of view as they tell their stories to us through their memories.

Drunken Sailor plays when you carry a Chest of 1000 Grogs btw...

  • @pithyrumble

Huh I forgot about the chest of grog, but idk, I think if it were put into a shanty it might sound cool.

  • Would be nice if each season the menu music could be a guest shanty in game

  • @phantaxus

I guess that would be cool but I think after a while rare are gonna run outta guest songs.

  • I curious if any new songs will be added for season 11 anyone have any thoughts on what the theme is for season 11?

Wait what if you are able to choose what songs you want to listen too on the main menu?

  • Like have a separate menu to have random shanties play in the background while you are in the menu

Furthermore adding shanties poses some challenges:

    • each shanty takes up a considerable amount of data that has to able to be loaded into memory at a moments notice, each shanty has multiple instrument tracks, each instrument track has 4 versions: instrument lead, instrument secondary, instrument lead drunk, Instrument secondary drunk

This used to also be the issue why no other instruments and shanties could be added in the first place (long time ago by now)

    • with each iconic song they want to add they will run into the simple issue of copyright, and the fees charged to work with something like that are abhorrent.
  • @callmebackdraft

I guess that makes sense because we have multiple variations of the song thru different instruments.

  • @raven-knight810 yeah that is a large part of the complexity, not to mention each recording needed to be made.

So each shantie needs the following

4 tracks each for one instrument as lead
4 tracks each for one instrument as backing
4 tracks each for one instrument as drunk lead
4 tracks each for one instrument as drunk backup

    Thats 16 tracks the need:

    • Recording and mastering
    • storage on the system
    • being ready to loaded in at a moments notice on any players client even if they never use instruments

I believe there are something like 17 shanties currently which means this situation already exists for 17*16 tracks = 272 musical tracks

And any new shanty grows that number fast.

Not to mention the copyright headaches

  • @callmebackdraft
Yikes that’s gotta be a real nightmare!

  • @callmebackdraft

I appreciate you telling me this, I never realized how big the music production was. Huge thanks should go to the music directors because if they had to make nearly 300 song variants then that should be not only congratulated but recognized by the dev team and the freaking community too.

  • Wait could them just have a tiny juke box thing like in the taverns or something and put it as a spare instrument so that any future songs they want to put it could be played while u r sailing? It make it easier because it be just the same song while u r sailing and it will keep playing plus u could take it anywhere if it is in ur inventory, just a random idea but just so it would be just one track and wouldn’t apply to other instruments
