PET Functionality

  • Pet functionality

Since SOT has added pets, I have seen a significant decrease in the amount of ships I board having pets aboard. The addition of pet functionality will bring about an actual purpose to use pets, and allow people to get more attached to their virtual companions. I know pets are exclusive to the pirate emporium and Rare is very good about useful things being available to everyone, so here are the solutions to the problems, and the plan I came up with to implement this change.

    PET FUNCTIONALITY: Single Item Holding

    1. pets will be able to hold one single item like the mermaid statues, but can only hold smaller trinkets. The largest thing they will be able to hold is a mermaid gem or potion. (Skulls and bigger can’t be held)
    2. Anybody can take the item away from your pet, that’s only if they notice that they are holding something.
    3. This can help when it comes to moving loot to harpoon spots in forts, you can carry 2 things at once, or 4 items total if you are using a chest.
    4. Maybe have it show the trinket on the pet via in the mouth of dogs and cats/ feet of a flying bird, but this isn’t necessary. Definitely have an indication that the pet is holding something. Maybe a small shiny glow around them
    5. Pets can randomly pick up something when traveling on island, but nothing you can see yourself, because it would be annoying if your pets pick up something and you never know. (The best thing they can randomly find would be a ruby mermaid gem, but they can find food items and fish maybe)

Now to talk about pets being in the pirate emporium only.

    1. when new player join, when they check the pets chest they will be prompted to select one of 4 boring pets, nothing special, so the emporium pets will be separately purchased with no extra functionality, but their looks will still draw people to want to buy them.
    2. Once the player selects one of the 4 you can only get the other 3 from the emporium anyways, but the selections can possibly be the following: Seagull, grey Mutt dog, brown basic capuchin, and grey cat.

Please upvote if you like and comment if you see any problems we can solve together.

  • So basically P2W item.

  • @whalelordgames and I want my hat to carry items for me. cosmetics shouldn't be helpful

  • No ptw pets.

I bet if they allowed people to equip multiple full sized pets you'd see more ships with more pets tho...

  • I'd support pet personalities

so people have the option to customize how a pet acts/reacts

this can add a lot of qol for people that are attached to their companion and/or base their companion off of a pet or the memory of a pet.

It would also help people to get rid of the distressed pet sounds/actions if they prefer other reactions.

  • @pithyrumble now sure if you read fully but it’s not btw because everyone will have access to atleast one pet

  • @burnbacon I clearly addressed that everyone will have access to 1 free pet but that one free pet will be a very basic one. Also somebody with as much experience as you shouldn’t consider giving your pet a flagon to carry that anyone can take PTW

  • @captain-coel the thing is that sea of thieves has so many cool mechanics, why kids the opportunity with something like pets: I feel like companions should have a use and not be useless, because in real life I can train a bird or dog to actually do stuff. It’s not huge but it’s small and simple

  • Pets are cosmetics (essentially) and have no functionality that would aid or hinder pirates intentionally.

In my personal opinion, that is how it should stay.

The last thing SoT needs is MORE stuff causing lag, which it would if everybody had a pet out (and they would) because it gave them any kind of advantage.

  • @look-behind-you thank you for your valid points, one thing I’d like to sort of counter with though would be if lag is such a large issue that hinders content, what can rare even do to fix this, since the game player base has been flaking off from lack of content. I know a lot of people on here just say “the game is fine as is” but it’s a live service game, and if they continue to decrease in player base we will lose the game eventually.

  • So hinder everyone that doesn't want to have a pet? Nah.

  • @redeyesith wdym hinder, it’s storing one item so moving stuff is .001x easier. I can say the same thing for captain supplies and storage crates. “So hinder everyone who can’t afford or doesn’t want to buy supplies”. Or somebody who can’t buy a captained ship to use sovereigns

  • @whalelordgames you could, and many did regarding those features. And it is a valid thing to bring up and consider, and was back when those were being tossed around too. And, as has been shown Rare will of course decide what they want to do in the end. But they should know that some of their users don't want that, just as they should know some do.

Personally I don't want them to have function beyond the function they have - something to show off if you want to use it like any other cosmetic.

But in this game, pets are just a cosmetic slot, like a hat or a hook. They shouldnt be treated special.

  • @captain-coel you’re right, but doesn’t mean they can’t change it, they even got their own chest. Think of all the money they will make too, if pets can do something and instead of using the free ones, people will want the flash one

  • @redeyesith since I started playing this game at Launch I can’t even count how many people I know left because of the progression system being all about cosmetics. I personally think the addition of in game currency purchasable things that give you a slight edge is a great thing. You also must understand that sea of thieves hasn’t been in a great place this last year, and although the addition of these things won’t bring back the people who left, they will help keep new players on the game . The majority of gamers play these long grind games in order to feel a sense of accomplishment, and sadly for rare, many people don’t find accomplishment in cosmetic items. (Personally I do) also to add another note I’m not for adding op things so long time players can decimate, I kinda just want them to add new things like weapons and ship upgrades, that are balanced and you have to buy.

But people shouldnt be forced to buy a pet to get full functionality. Its just bad form. plus the pets are all kinda terrible and annoying.

  • @captain-coel I still feel like you didn’t read my entire post. Nobody will need to buy pets. I’m my idea Every player will have a choice of 1 free pet of 4. The Choices they get will be boring normal looking pets, so if somebody wants a cooler looking one, they will buy, basically a reskin. And yes pets are annoying, but if we give them a purpose then maybe we can change peoples outlooks on them.

I did. Pets are annoying. There is no one in my guild who uses them and if you make them useful, you make them required. That is why its an overall terrible idea. I dont think you are understanding this.

  • @whalelordgames
Sure. You're also creating a meta where people have to have a pet. Some people don't like the pets for various reasons.

Let them stay a cosmetic that kinda gets in the way sometimes lol.

  • @captain-coel the thing is their use will be that they can carry one trinket like a chest. It’s such an insignificant change if we talk usefulness, but it’s significant enough for you to build a bond with your virtual animal.

  • ...if everyone gets a free pet....how exactly is this good for the Emporium/Rare/making money? 🤔

Surely, if everyone gets a free advantage....why would they buy one?!

  • @pithyrumble the functionality is so small and insignificant that it will not create a “meta”. It’s just so people can develop a better bond with their virtual companion

  • @look-behind-you because the base pets will serve as a catalyst for people to want to buy the one they think looks way better. The people who don’t wanna spend money wont if it’s a cosmetic, but if the cosmetic is functional, then they will. I think it will bring more sales to the emporium. You give ‘em a taste, and they’ll want the one they like more, because it’s a cosmetic based game in the end, so people will want the pet they want most. Sure youll have the person who likes the base pets, but not many

It is not small that I can carry my veilstone and 2/4 Athena items to my ship with a pet. It's like time to kill. You need to be occupied with a task so pvp cam catch up.

    Instead of 3 solo trips it's 2. Maybe 1.

You will have to use a pet to keep up.

  • @pithyrumble okay then there’s a great valid point, make it so pets can’t hold tall tale items, but the Athena stuff, why not. If your ship get decimated, atleast you can have your measly 1800 max little Athena egg, or 4. It’s not something that’s insanely crazy though. Or even better when your ship sinks, and you mermaid away, the pets lose the items they are holding and they float up with the rest of the loot. I appreciate it when you guys disagree with feedback on why, so we can come up with solutions. Rare already has things in the game that give us slight advantages, what’s one more tiny thing, I’m sure they will add more going forward

  • @whalelordgames orrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....no.

Giving someone a P2W item without the pay part....would not make people pay for something they already have....they already have it.

Pets are cosmetics, not tools. Sea of Thieves stated VERY early they wouldn't sell 'power' for real money.

Having something paid that does something for you is Pay to Win, regardless of if you, inexplicably, give everyone a freebie. Some players might not have the computer/internet to sustain the extra lag that would inevitably occur, some people may not be able to put up with the noises or may have phobias etc.

It brings more negatives than positives.

  • @look-behind-you 💀 I can’t wait so sea of thieves to add something way larger to the game, that will cause more lag, but nobody will complain because they will optimize it over time and it will be cool. (Oh wait they have been doing that for years now) it’s called live service content and improving a game

if phobias are such a large thing in a game that impacts so many people why not drain the ocean for the people who have Thalassophobiar

  • I can't shake the feeling that this is just a bait thread...

P2W pets is a no in my personal (and seemingly most others) opinion.

"Give everyone a free one" makes no sense and doesn't balance the negatives.

  • @look-behind-you it isn’t a bait thread, it is just a feedback fourm where I’m allowed to post my opinion on what I would like in the game, and you guys can say no, but I also have the free will to defend my decisions. Just because people say no to it, doesn’t give me the right to not want it still. It’s about positive feedback, not just constant bringing others down. You can disagree, but you don’t need to do it in such a condescending manner, we all love the same game, why else would we be here in the first place. If you don’t like the idea, then just don’t upvote, or comment with empty “this is a bad idea” comments. Instead say why it’s a bad idea and maybe even give feedback on things you would personally change about it. It’s so black and white, yes and no, where is the compromise.

But you cant seem to see the negatives here. Its a bad idea. It makes a cosmetic a requirement.

  • @whalelordgames

Yes. My add all pets suggestion would cause server issues with my 18 different pets on deck.

    And that's why #grumble grumble# it's okay it doesn't get added.

You're going to force a playstyle on someone a whole bunch more than already happens. Now people HAVE to use pets.

  • @captain-coel and @PithyRumble but it’s not a requirement, just like buying storage crates, or a captained ship, or captain supplies aren’t a requirement. Can you Atleast not see that point I’m making. It’s a slight Advantage that’s there if you want, but it’s not something that’s going to be gamebreaking. Somebody on a solo sloop can use it to move loot slightly faster, but at the end of the day, a brig can still take their loot just as fast. You guys treat it as if it’s a free crate of cursed cannon balls.

  • @whalelordgames I, and several others, have given reasons why it is not likely.

    It is P2W.

If you give everyone one for free, no one will buy one.

Pets are cosmetic only and provide no additional help/hindrance.

Some people may not be able to use a pet at all times for various reasons, which would then put them at an unfair disadvantage.

This is all before getting into the 'just make pets do stuff', which I imagine is not as simple as you may think it is.

It would be a lot of work for no benefit, no return and a fair few negatives!

  • @whalelordgames

When the mods chime in with "design"... take the L lol.
