Skull of Siren song is insanely fun.

  • Just handed in a skull! Got the first half on my own, stole the other half, and defended myself with the skull while running to Briggsy. Exhilarating!

Definitely has some Arena vibes. I look forward to participating in lots of these.

  • The people who failed are whining in another thread, but I agree, totally fun.

  • Some servers are going to feel very close to arena and that is awesome.

This voyage is to pvp what veils were to pve. Such an awesome design that stays appealing and is constant opportunity for something interesting to get into.

Some of these servers are randomly going to be the most fun some have had since the best times of arena, no exaggeration

  • @wolfmanbush my first skull voyage ended up having the entire server after the chest and key, it was great! 3 brigs, a galleon, and my sloop xD

  • Place kegs around Briggsy, and use the barrel emote to tuck and blow them up when the other crews are close. It's not like Briggsy is going to die again from the explosions, right?

  • @dragotech123

Way easier said than done. Briggsy’s location is only revealed after the skull is out. It’s not a guarantee you’ll get there, find her, and set up, before the other crew.

True, but if you manage to do that I bet you would have a nice youtube clip to share.

  • I was fortunate enough to sink 2 ships to get my first turned in

and I fell off the bow 3 times trying to reach Briggsy at the top of shipwreck bay

Leave it to me to win fights but almost lose my first skull via the bunny hill of parkour in SoT.

  • @wolfmanbush The turn in on the island is definitely the hardest part 🙃

    I couldn't find Briggsy!

Briggsy is by far my favorite character in SoT so I love that she is a part of this but she tricked me.

I zoomed in and thought I had her location, a ram strat best strat fly off the boat (skull in hand) perfect 360 landing and sell was the plan.

Instead I went head first into a rock wall, got stuck in a plant.

  • @wolfmanbush sounds like chaos I personally love flameheart junior as a character but Briggsy is also a diverse character

She's the adventurer, wild and free in personality.

I don't really attach to lore too much other than Briggsy and Merrick. Whenever they are a part of something I am all in.

  • It's so freaking good! We unfortunately had one bug out but apart from that I've been having the most fun ever, better than Arena even.

  • SoSS is amazing! Hourglass was a great idea but it didn't replace the chaotic, server-wide PvP of Arena. Putting no limits on the mode also made it quite interesting and nuanced every time it is completed. I play it in full Arena colors to make it feel even more nostalgic! Truly a great idea.

I hope that they continue to add rewards to it like they do with the fate of fortune set, that would keep players coming back to it.

The cool thing about HG on the pvp side is that it just adds to everything else. Randomly can make fotd more interesting, randomly can make this new voyage more interesting. It's a healthy hop.

The game is making so much progress as far as its original design goes.

This is by far the best time for people to start or return to this game if they are looking for adventure and random combat. Not taking it too serious is all that is required for fun. So much opportunity to have a good time, no matter how someone plays.

  • Agreed, unfortunately Rare likes to control exactly how you play and disincentives fun world events like this by removing the ability to earn guild rep for it.

It's not really built for grinding as far as I can see.

Looks to me like they designed it to have fun opt-in random battles rather than just something to grind/cheese.

There are often changes made based on feedback but it's a strong design currently for the intent imo.

It's not some evil conspiracy, there are a whole bunch of things that are not giving rep that they are working on.

Let the developer who has never written code with a bug speak up, otherwise remain silent.

  • Today's session was an absolute riot!

This new voyage is so good.

I do foresee a problem with continued participation after people complete the commendations. No Emissary compatibility. No Guild progress. After you're done with the commendations, it's just for fun. I know I will 100% be having fun with it long past completing the commendations, but I imagine I'm not in the majority there.

  • I love this voyage.
Best thing is thas not pure naval pvp.
Has a lot of "Hunt: Showdown" once it goes to the final island.
To make it even more better there should be some sort of "extraction time" when handing over the skull to briggsy.

I was fighting over one at snake island (it was great to get back to snake island for something)

a brig full of skilled pvpers but they were hesitant so they just sailed around while 2 hunted me in the bushes

it really did bring back that arena feel of turning in a chest and I love that so many islands are back in play now

So much win with this voyage.

It was nice to see a brig sailing at a speed other than the speed of light for a change.

  • I agree, this was absolutely some of the best PvP fun I've had since arena died.

  • Generally, I like the voyage and the PvP is enjoyable. I absolutely hate the decision to spawn players so close to you after they sink if they have the voyage active. This opens up a lot of play patterns that are unhealthy and makes it so that if you have a longer trip to the turn-in location as the ship carrying the skull, you are going to have to sink the same boat at least 3 times, and if you have multiple boats trying to sink you, you're never going to have any time to resupply or get away since they're basically on top of you as soon as they respawn with fresh supplies.

  • @karadinn yeah, I hate the respawn thing too. I just saw a streamer sink some newb 3 times and he just kept coming back. No skill required whatsoever. Once you've been sunk once, you should be kicked from the server/quest, or at the very least respawn them a fair distance away as a penalty for sinking. At this point, you can simply allow your ship to sink just so you can stock back up and go after your opponents rather than trying to repair/bucket on your ship like a normal fight. You shouldn't be rewarded for being a bad player. It's just silly

  • @misterfiction86

Something tells me they're going to adjust this very soon. I noticed myself that the respawns were fairly close; I was sunk near the key and respawned only an island away and was able to retrieve it.

Lol content creators relied on this very strat for a couple of years with hopping for reapers.

This entire voyage is supposed to be an opt in rumble where people keep on rumblin'

What made arena interesting is all the random chaos, that's what's fun about this voyage.

"bad players" don't cause irritation in this, this isn't a situation where people are trying to farm event loot on 1 island. They are just players trying to participate in content, they aren't bad, they are just trying with what they have to work with.

This is supposed to be random and chaotic.

This is just a fun (and balanced for change) version of the unfun stuff that content creators and pvp hoppers were doing to everyone else over the years lol.

This is way better than defending reaper's hideout to sell 3x because some hopper found or got tossed the server.

I had a duo fight me a few times and I was fortunate to get it turned in and we all gg'd and it's fine. They wanted comm credit and they had crew size advantage, they should go for it. It's the point of the content.

I've annoyed a few crews over it, because I am a solo and a solo to 3-4 people with experience is at best an annoying mosquito. It's a part of pvp in adventure. I didn't sink but it's just as annoying to have to try to take out the mosquito buzzing around to turn it in.

  • It's really good. Fits so perfectly into the sot experience.

  • @jumbie7311 I agree, Skull of Siren song is a great addition. It certainly adds exhilaration and it's great players can choose whether to participate.

I see that 100% the opposite, I give the player a ton of credit for continuing to try and not rage quitting or whining like many would.

I like the idea that just sinking someone once doesn't put them out of the running, that would make it too easy.

I guess some people just don't like the challenge.

  • @foambreaker It's not a challenge to sink people who keep coming back, it's an annoyance. Believe it or not, if I sunk someone the first time, I can probably do it again. If I am doing a static event like FOTD, I've had people come back and get sunk like 6 times. I don't mind them coming back once or twice and trying to rematch, or adjusting their strategies.

But I don't admire them for continuing to come back after two or three failed tries because more often than not, continuously losing comes with a lot of salt, and they are probably going to say something unprovoked that will get them suspended for a couple of weeks.

I am not against people having more than one chance to participate in the voyage and possibly win after losing, but I am against any situation where intentionally sinking your boat is somehow a viable strategy.

  • @karadinn How is getting sunk while trying to capture the siren "intentional"?

"continuously losing comes with a lot of salt" I guess that depends on the person.

  • @foambreaker I guess you're unaware that if you start far away from voyage objectives that other people have collected, you can scuttle your ship (sinking yourself intentionally) and spawn a new boat near them.

It means that if I wanted, I could go about my normal business, not doing any element of the voyage but track it all the same, and once I see a piece on the map and track where they were going, I could sell my stuff, scuttle my boat to spawn near them, and sink them as they approach the turn in. Anytime they outmaneuver me or lose me, or if they board me and anchor me, I can just scuttle, spawn close to them, and make up the ground.

As for the other part, I appreciate that you're trying to give people the benefit of the doubt, but in my experience, if a person comes back more than three times, that's about when they start talking, and almost everything they have to say is not very nice. If you're persistent enough to continuously come back after losing badly, that rarely comes about because of a can-do attitude; it's often because a person feels they can win, that the other players who beat them are bad, and when it becomes obvious that they're not going to win, they start getting giga toxic.

I'll definitely go out for a rematch, maybe even two, but I am willing to admit when I am outmatched and I'll just say "gg" and go to another server.

  • I have to say, I'm not much of a PvPer, but these voyages got my adrenaline pumping! Very fun and it tests all of your skills.

I hope they expand on the Siren's Song sets each season like they are with the Chest of Fortune and Reaper's Chests.

  • @ollieoxenfree I am glad to see this because PvP in Sea of Thieves is a blast. I only have one big complaint with it as someone who enjoys PvP, but the voyage itself is really cool and we have had some great moments come out of it. I hope they make improvements to it so that people want to keep doing it even when they have the cosmetics.

  • @ollieoxenfree said in Skull of Siren song is insanely fun.:

Absolutely the same. I'm heavily PvE-skewed and I've enjoyed this voyage a lot. Reminds me of Arena 1.0 when it wasn't just about PvP.

When Skull of the Siren's Song was first announced I was sure it wasn't going to be something I'd do but they've struck a nice balance of PvPvE.

Not knowing how many crews are opted in really adds to the tension but the fact they lock the voyage after the chest is open was a great choice, it prevents server hoppers joining at the last minute, and that's really a good thing for the longevity of this content.

The main change I would like to see though is having it count towards reputation and Emissary ledger for whatever company you are representing. I think that would incentivise more activity, especially when folks complete the commendations. As it is, probably about 50% of the voyages seem to go uncontested.
