PVP: it's numerous issues.

  • Hi,

I've played SoT since it's release. For the most part, I've enjoyed it. There are however a few things that annoy me.

For context, I am strongly in the PVE camp. But I find PVP in this game woeful.

So for starters, yes PVP should be in the game. It is the basis for the game and I agree that it has a part to play. What I don't like is how SoT does it. I've never in my years of playing had a full on Ship-to-ship fight with other players. It's always people climbing aboard, dropping anchor, and jumping around till you die or kill them. Why couldn't you just cut your ladders to your boat to stop these pirates coming aboard? It hopefully will push Ship-to-Ship PVP more! Which is what I want!

I also feel alliances should be that, an ALLIANCE. If you join another team of Pirates, is it right that they can just grief you? I get its Sea of THIEVES but to me this is abusing mechanics? Shouldn't it be stopped whilst your allied together?

Maybe I'm a grumpy old PVE'er, but I'd like think I made some sense or atleast offer some solutions. Let me know your thoughts.

    Hi,

I've played SoT since it's release.
I've never in my years of playing had a full on Ship-to-ship fight with other players.

How is that possible? You hit your shots, other crews cant even afford to board you as they are busy trying to stay afloat.

  • @argentinehalo0 hourglass is fantastic for naval fights, try it out.

Removing the ladders? No. What if you fall overboard?

Alliances? Why shouldn’t I or you get the opportunity to betray because that’s our choice? It’s a sandbox, and we’re pirates!

  • @zig-zag-ltu Hi, Easy to say harder to do. Yes, you could do that, but as I said if they are already aboard you can't do that.

  • @argentinehalo0 I understand, this is why I quoted your first sentence. I play from 2020 Summer (if I remember correctly) and had a lot of battles where we sunk someone and nobody boarded us, or someone bombarded us so bad, we could not board them. Just thought that since you play this since 2018, you should have at least a few.

  • @tesiccl Hi, Haven't use Hourglasses, will try for the next run?

Yes, but that's the price you pay, could just mermaid back!

I disagree with the betrayal of alliance, especially as it reveals your location. If you break it off, there should atleast be a cool down IMO. To me, it still abuses the mechanics of what is suppose to support one another.

  • Alliances do not need buffed, no. Keeping a fundamental layer of "encourages working together, but betrayals can still happen" is important.

Also if you're always just losing to the same boarding strategy and want to have more ship fights, you gotta upgrade your defence techniques and capability, and get through the average TDMer skull density that they're not welcome to walk around aboard your ship. The blunderbuss and some spacial awareness do WONDERS to tell the enemy to just naval in combat...
Outright cutting off boarding entirely as a strat isn't really great game design, it just comes across as.. lazier, and only really benefitting lazy players tbh.

  • As far as alliances go,

Betrayal is personal in this game to a lot of the people that are betrayed. Many will try to spin that but it's a personal action in an adventure game.

This isn't a sus game where everyone is on the same page and it's clearly the point of the game. When people mess with people in that way, people take it personal and that's a completely understandable feeling for the situation. It being off-putting and leading people to play other games is always understandable.

There is largely nothing that can be done about it other than a person looking out for themselves and adapting once they find out how things are out there but it is personal to people and should always be acknowledged as such.

  • 'Just thought that since you play this since 2018, you should have at least a few."

I know, sounds like I should of too! I think they either ended in stalemates or someone run away. For me I find that even more so now. Cannons are second nature to boarding. Maybe back then it was better but it was 5 years ago, maybe my memory has failed me!

  • @gallerine5582 Hi, Thanks for your comment.

Perhaps that is an aspect to use the blunderbus more, I find myself missing.

I would say it's the opposite. The 'lazy' option is to board, drop anchor and grief. Surely cutting it off means they can't just swim?

You could still board EASILY, by either crashing your ship into their's (thus taking a gamble for attacking) or cannon on (requiring more skill)

I've never said don't board. I'm saying make it tougher.

  • @wolfmanbush Hi, thank you for your comment!

This is arguably one of the best comments I've got. I think you make a great point.

I for one, do take it personally. Its hard not to when after an hour or so of work you lose your hard earned plunder.

The Safer Sea's update for me kind of answers this a bit but not alot. For me, I think PVP should have more incentives. For instance, getting a small bit of gold for being in game, or a bonus for staying alive? Rather than capping the Safer Seas at 30%. But encourage people to risk the open seas.

Overall I think there are better ways to bring about PVP without what we currently have.

Imo it's more about the community damage as an effect of betrayal in an environment where there are social/power imbalances.

It's a massive part of why cooperation has so often struggled and their vision of pirates dropping it all to get along for events or this or that.

They couldn't control it even if they wanted to so it's more of just an effect of the reality we play in rather than some sort of design flaw but betrayal has done quite a bit of damage to the community building part of the adventure experience here.

Alliances as a feature never really did much good for the game imo. It's just built on cheesing for gold, not really anything else is a part of the feature. I personally think the game would have seen less community damage by just letting people figure out their own situations without so many people feeling misled by an alliance feature.

  • You don't seem to understand how combat works and what you suggested removes a big portion of the skill required to PvP. Also alliances and betrayals are intentionally a core design of the game. Don't take in game stuff too seriously my friend, at the end of the day it's just pixels on a screen. That being said I do agree with your comment that not sinking for a long period of time should yield some kind of reward. Personally I would like a bounty system introduced but I understand this doesn't cater to everyone.

  • @argentinehalo0 I don't see either of these as issues so I guess it's subjective. A lot of recent pvp changes have made it harder to sink on naval alone thus forcing more of a board heavy meta so that's on devs as much as anyone.

And I'd rather get rid of alliances than alliance betrayal, it shouldn't be a hardcoded thing. Yeah I feel bad betraying sometimes (I don't often alliance) but for example I could sink you at a fof and you keep coming back and conyesting, or we do it together then the fight starts....its kinda obvious which way works better.

  • Im currently stuck in a match with no opponent and a 5 streak for an hour already : /

  • @soulstinger2k20 wrong thread?

  • @hiradc pvp and its numerous issues? Nonstop glitches sounds like an issue to me

just cause the title is loosely related to a personal complaint doesn't really mean it automatically has any purpose being in the post comments, there's nothing we can do to make your HG farm go any faster

  • @soulstinger2k20 yeah the title was that but the post was more specific, fair enough tho just checking
